What is a Story reply on Instagram?
A Story reply is a message someone sends from your Instagram Story, by typing in the “Send message” box at the bottom or tapping a quick reaction emoji. It arrives in your DMs with a small preview of the Story, and only the two of you can see it.
Updated 6 October 2026
A Story reply is a private message sent from an Instagram Story to the person who posted it, arriving in their DMs with a preview of that Story.
How Story replies work
- Typed replies: viewers write in the message box at the bottom of your Story. You get the reply as a DM, shown with a thumbnail of the Story it’s about.
- Quick reactions: tapping one of the emoji reactions sends that emoji to your DMs as a message.
- Likes: the heart on a Story isn’t a reply. No chat starts; the like shows up in your list of viewers.
- Sticker answers: responses to a poll or a question sticker are collected on the Story itself, not sent as DMs.
- Close Friends Stories work the same way, but only people on your list can see them, so only they can reply.
By default, anyone who can see your Story can reply to it with a message. Your Story settings let you narrow that, for example to people you follow, or turn message replies off. Once sent, a reply lives in your inbox like any other message and stays there after the Story expires.
Story reply or comment?
| Question | Story reply | Comment on a post |
|---|---|---|
| Who can see it | Only you and the person who sent it | Anyone who can see the post |
| Where it arrives | Your DMs, with a preview of the Story | Under the post, with a notification |
| How long a business has to answer by DM | 24 hours from the person’s last message | 7 days from the comment, for one private reply |
| What the first DM can carry | Text, links or buttons, since they wrote to you first | Plain text only; links and buttons can follow once they reply |
That difference shapes how you ask. “Reply SIZES to this Story” keeps the request private and lets the answer include the size chart link straight away. “Comment SIZES on this Reel” is public, so other viewers see people asking, but the first DM back has to be plain text that asks the person to reply before the link can follow.
Answering Story replies as a business
A Story reply is often the warmest message an account gets: the person has just watched your Story and chosen to write. Meta’s messaging API treats it as a message from them, so the usual rule applies: the business has 24 hours from their last message to respond, and a tool connected to the account can send that response.
- Ask for a single reply word on the Story itself, such as SIZES, PRICE or MENU. One word is easier to spot, by you or by an auto-reply, than a sentence.
- Put the word in the Story’s text, not only in a voice-over, so people watching with the sound off can see it.
- Treat emoji reactions as applause. A 🔥 on a new product doesn’t need a sales pitch back; a short thanks is plenty, or nothing at all.
- Hand questions about an existing order to a person. “Where’s my parcel?” needs someone who can look it up.
DMFast answers Story replies on Instagram professional accounts, either for a chosen word or for every reply, and won’t send the same person one auto-reply twice in a day. Story-reply automation isn’t available for Facebook Pages in DMFast.
An example
A running shop posts a Story of new trail shoes with “Reply SIZES for the fit guide.” A viewer types “sizes pls,” the message lands in the shop’s DMs, and the answer with the guide’s link goes back into the same chat.
Questions people ask
Can other people see my reply to someone’s Story?
No. A Story reply goes only to the person who posted the Story, as a private message. Other viewers don’t see it, and nothing appears on the Story itself.
How do I stop people replying to my Stories?
Change who can send message replies in your Story settings. You can narrow replies, for example to people you follow, or turn them off. Switching replies off doesn’t hide the Story; people can still watch it.
Does liking a Story send a message?
No. The heart on a Story is a private like: the person who posted sees it in their viewer list, and no chat starts. Quick reaction emojis are different, because each one is sent as a message.
Can a business answer Story replies automatically?
Yes, on an Instagram professional account. The reply counts as a message from the viewer, which gives the business 24 hours to respond through Meta’s messaging API. Because the viewer wrote first, the answer can include a link right away.
What’s the difference between a Story reply and a Story mention?
Direction. A Story reply is a message someone sends to you from your Story. A Story mention is your @username placed in someone else’s Story, which notifies you and sends you a DM with a preview.
