Auto-replies in depth
Triggers, links, reminders, and which auto-reply answers when several could.
An auto-reply waits for a trigger, then answers in the DMs (and under the comment, if you like). This page covers every option; to make your first one, see Your first auto-reply.
Triggers
| Trigger | Runs when someone… | Choose |
|---|---|---|
| Comments | comments on your post | One post, several posts (Pro) or every post, including ones you post later |
| Story replies | replies to your story | Any story, or one story you pick |
| DMs | sends you a message | Any message, or messages with your words |
Each trigger runs on words, on a meaning, or on everything:
- Has a word: whole words, ignoring capitals, so GUIDE matches “guide please 🙏” but not “guidebook”. Add several words to catch spellings; a phrase like price list matches anywhere in the text.
- Means something (AI), on Growth and Business: describe what people mean, like “asks about the price”, and the AI matches comments and messages that mean it in any words or language. Each match uses one AI credit; nothing is charged when nothing matches. See AI assistant.
- No words: answers everything on that trigger. Useful on one post or story; on every post it answers every comment.
What it sends
- A public reply under the comment, so others see you answered. Add up to five versions and one is picked at random each time, which reads less like a bot.
- The DM: your opening message, then the link as a button. On Pro and above, add up to three links to one DM, each with its own button and its own click count.
- Only send to followers (Pro): people who don't follow you are asked to follow first, then get the link when they tap the button.
- Ask for their email first: the link follows once they reply with an email. Throwaway addresses are turned away. Emails land in Emails.
- Products from your store, as cards they can tap to buy or download. See Store and payouts.
Reminders
On Pro and above, an auto-reply can send one reminder when someone stops: they didn't follow, didn't send their email, or got the link and didn't open it. Pick a wait from 30 minutes to 20 hours. The reminder is skipped as soon as they reply or tap the link, and Instagram's 24-hour window means it can't be later than that.
Which auto-reply answers
When more than one could answer, DMFast picks one, in this order:
- An auto-reply on that exact post or story, before one on every post.
- One whose words match, before one that runs on a meaning (so words never cost credits).
- A meaning the AI matches.
- One with no words, last.
The same auto-reply answers a person once a day at most, however many times they comment.
Editing, pausing and older comments
- Use the pencil on Auto-replies to change anything. Changes apply from DMFast's next message, including to people partway through, such as someone who hasn't followed yet.
- The switch pauses an auto-reply without losing its results.
- Reply to older comments (Pro): the refresh button answers matching comments from the last 7 days that came in before the auto-reply existed.
