Fonts for YouTube comments
YouTube comments already do bold, italic and strikethrough without a generator: wrap words in *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic or -hyphens- for strikethrough, and the style appears once you post. For anything else, such as cursive or small caps, type below and paste the result. Those are Unicode look-alike characters rather than fonts, so they also show in titles and descriptions, with a few catches.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Comments and replies | Works | YouTube's own marks and pasted Unicode styles both show, in the app and on the website. For bold, italic and strikethrough the marks are the better choice, because the words stay ordinary text. |
| Timestamps in comments | Doesn't work | A plain time like 3:42 becomes a link that jumps to that moment. In bold Unicode, ๐ฏ:๐ฐ๐ฎ is just text, so style the words around a time and leave the digits alone. |
| @mentions | Doesn't work | A mention links to a channel only when you type @ and the handle in plain characters. A styled handle looks the part but leads nowhere. |
| Your @handle | Doesn't work | Handles are 3 to 30 characters long and limited to letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens and full stops, so styled characters can't be part of one. |
| Video titles | Partly | Styled characters display in titles, but viewers search in plain words, so a title in cursive or bold Unicode is harder to find. Style one word at most and keep the subject plain. |
| Descriptions and chapters | Partly | Descriptions have no formatting of their own, so pasted styles are the only way to make a heading bold. Chapter timestamps, links and hashtags below it must stay in plain characters. |
| Hashtags | Doesn't work | A hashtag in a title or description links to other videos with that tag only when it's typed in plain letters. A styled tag is just decoration. |
YouTube's built-in formatting
YouTube reads three pairs of marks in comments and replies. Put each mark directly against the words, with no space between them, and close every mark you open. The marks stay visible while you type and disappear when the comment is posted.
| Style | Type this | Posted as |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | *best part* | best part, in bold |
| Italic | _best part_ | best part, in italics |
| Strikethrough | -best part- | best part, crossed out |
| Bold italic | *_best part_* | Both at once: the marks can be nested |
Because this is real formatting, the letters underneath are still the ordinary ones. Search can match them, screen readers read them as words, and anyone who copies the comment gets normal text. None of that holds for the pasted styles further down, which is why the marks are the better choice whenever they can do the job.
Tip: If a style doesn't take, look for a space between a mark and the word, as in * best part *, or a mark that never got its partner.
What the marks can't do
The built-in set stops at three styles and only works in comments. Pasted Unicode fills the gaps:
- Other looks: there's no mark for cursive, small caps or Old English, so paste ๐๐๐๐โฏ๐น characters for those.
- Underline: YouTube has no underline mark. The Underline style puts a line under each character, bฬฒeฬฒsฬฒtฬฒ, with a break at every space.
- Titles and descriptions: neither has formatting, so pasted bold is the only way to make a line stand out there.
| Question | YouTube's marks | Pasted styles |
|---|---|---|
| How many styles? | Three: bold, italic and strikethrough | Dozens, including cursive and small caps |
| Where do they work? | Comments and replies | Comments, replies, titles and descriptions |
| Found by search? | Yes, the words are normal | Often not, because the characters differ |
| Read aloud properly? | Yes | Not reliably: some screen readers spell them out or skip them |
Timestamps, chapters and numbers
YouTube turns times written in plain digits into links, which is what makes a comment like โthe solo at 2:05โ useful: tap the time and the video jumps there. Chapters work the same way, built from a list of timestamps in the description that starts at 0:00. Bold Unicode has digits of its own, ๐ฌ to ๐ต, and they break both.
So style the label, never the time. Italic and cursive leave digits plain anyway, because Unicode has no italic or cursive numbers, which makes them the safer styles for a line with a time in it:
- ๐๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐: 3:42, a bold label with a plain time that still links.
- ๐๐ฆ๐ด๐ต ๐ฑ๐ข๐ณ๐ต ๐ด๐ต๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ด ๐ข๐ต 3:42, where italic Unicode leaves the digits alone.
- *Best part* 3:42, using YouTube's own bold, the simplest of the three.
Titles and descriptions for your own videos
YouTube matches searches against titles, among other things, and viewers type plain words. A title like ๐๐ธ๐ป๐ท๐ฒ๐ท๐ฐ ๐ก๐ธ๐พ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ท๐ฎ is built from maths characters rather than the letters m, o and r, so it may never match a search for morning routine. If you want a styled touch, put it on a word nobody searches for, such as a series label, and leave the subject plain.
Descriptions are a better home for styled text, since nothing in them has formatting. A bold heading such as ๐๐๐๐ฅ above a list of links helps people scan. Keep everything that does a job in plain characters: the links themselves, the chapter list and any hashtags.
Styled comments that people still read
Comment sections move quickly and most replies are plain, so one styled word stands out more than a styled paragraph. Some habits that suit YouTube:
- Strikethrough for a joke correction: โI've watched this -once- six times this week.โ
- Italics for a line quoted from the video, so it's clear which words aren't yours.
- Bold for the one detail you're asking about, such as the name of a recipe or a piece of kit.
- Cursive for a short note on a milestone video, like ๐ธโด๐โ๐๐ถ๐๐ on a channel's anniversary.
Avoid styling a whole comment. Long runs of unusual characters are tiring on a small screen, and a screen reader may spell them out or skip them, so someone listening misses what you said.
Questions people ask
How do I make text bold in a YouTube comment?
Put an asterisk right before and after the words, like *this*, with no spaces inside the marks, then post. The asterisks disappear and the words show in bold. The marks work the same on a phone and on a computer.
Can I underline text in a YouTube comment?
There's no built-in underline. The Underline style on this page adds a line under each character, bฬฒeฬฒsฬฒtฬฒ, which displays in comments. It's made of extra characters rather than formatting, so search and screen readers handle it less well than YouTube's own bold or italic.
Can I change the font YouTube uses for comments?
No. Every comment is shown in YouTube's own typeface, and nothing you set changes what other people see. Pasted styles only look different because each letter has been swapped for another character.
Why didn't my timestamp turn into a link?
YouTube only links times typed in plain digits with a colon, like 1:05 or 1:02:30. A time pasted in bold Unicode digits, such as ๐ญ:๐ฌ๐ฑ, looks similar but is made of different characters, so it stays as text. Retype the digits normally.
Can my YouTube handle use a fancy font?
No. A handle is 3 to 30 characters of letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens and full stops, so styled characters are out. Use them in comments, or in your channel description if you want a decorative line.
