Fonts for Instagram captions

Stories and the Reels editor have a text tool with built-in fonts. A post caption has nothing like it: no font list and no bold or italic button. If you draft a caption in a notes app with real bold, the bold vanishes when you paste it into Instagram, because the formatting doesn't travel with the words. A line like 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 survives, because every letter in it is a bold character in its own right.

The same fact explains the downsides. To Instagram, 𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 isn't the word dinner but six unusual characters, so the more of a caption you style, the less of it search and screen readers can use.

Each featured style suits one part of a caption. Here is a recipe post laid out with them:

Notice what stays plain: the dish, the method and the tags. Those are the words someone might search for and the words a screen reader needs to say properly. The styling marks the structure without hiding the content.

In the feed, a caption is cut off after its opening and the rest waits behind “more”. That opening is the one part nearly everyone reads, which makes it the natural home for a styled line. A few rules keep it working:

• Style the hook, not the subject. In 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿: paneer wraps in 20 minutes, the bold catches the eye and paneer wraps stays searchable.
• Keep it to one short line. A styled line that wraps onto a second row looks heavy and pushes your actual point further down.
• Don't open with the sparkle frame. It puts 12 characters of decoration before your first word, so readers meet symbols before they meet the point.
• Watch the numbers. Italic has no digits of its own and leaves 20 upright, which looks deliberate in an aside but odd in a headline.

• Hashtags and @mentions, so tags group your post and mentions reach the person.
• Prices, dates, times and addresses, which people need to read at a glance and sometimes copy.
• Web addresses. Instagram doesn't make links in captions tappable, so people copy them by hand, and a styled address copies as the wrong characters.
• Comment keywords. If you ask people to comment a word such as RECIPE, write it in plain capitals: people copy what they see, and an automation listening for RECIPE may not count 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗘.

A style that looks fine on your phone can show as empty boxes on someone else's, usually because their device has no font with those characters. Bold, italic and small caps are widely supported; the rarer look-alike alphabets are the usual culprits.

You don't have to delete the post. Instagram lets you edit a caption after posting: open the post, tap the three dots, choose Edit and swap the problem line for a more common style. The photo, likes and comments stay as they are.
