Bold fonts for Instagram

Instagram has no bold button for captions, bios, comments or DMs, so bold text has to be pasted in: type below, copy a bold style and paste it into the app. Each bold letter is a separate Unicode character, such as 𝗕 in place of B, rather than formatting. That’s why it stays bold for everyone, and why search and hashtags don’t read 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 as the word bold.

Where they work

Bold fonts for Instagram: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Post and Reel captionsWorksBold shows in the feed, on Reels and on the post itself. It earns its place on the opening words or as labels in a long caption.
BioWorksA bold first line works as a heading over plain details. Add more bold than that and the heading gets lost among the rest.
Name fieldWorksBold letters save in your name, though Instagram already sets your name heavily on your profile, so the change is subtle. Keep the words people search for plain.
Comments and repliesWorksOne bold word adds stress. A whole bold comment under someone else’s post tends to read as raising your voice.
DMs and broadcast channelsWorksBold sends like any other text, which makes it handy for a heading at the top of a long message or channel update.
UsernameDoesn't workHandles accept only a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores, so a bold @name can’t be saved.
Hashtags and @mentionsDoesn't workA bold tag or mention is spelled with different characters from the plain one, so it neither joins the hashtag nor tags the account.

Four bolds and the jobs they suit on Instagram

The generator has four bold styles. They look different, and only two of them make numbers bold, which matters whenever a caption is about a price, a date or how many places are left. Here is “Only 3 spots left” in each.

StyleExampleBold 3?Where it fits
Bold𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟯 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁YesCaption openers, offers and anything with a number
Bold (serif)𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟑 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭YesQuote posts and accounts that want a printed, editorial look
Bold italic𝙊𝙣𝙡𝙮 3 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙨 𝙡𝙚𝙛𝙩NoOne urgent phrase, as long as it has no number in it
Bold cursive𝓞𝓷𝓵𝔂 3 𝓼𝓹𝓸𝓽𝓼 𝓵𝓮𝓯𝓽NoA name, or a sign-off at the end of a caption

Unicode drew bold digits for the upright styles only, so in bold italic and bold cursive the 3 stays a regular, thin 3. If the number is the news, use plain Bold, which also sits closest to the lettering Instagram itself uses.

How much bold each part of Instagram can take

WhereWhat to boldExample
Feed captionThe opening few words𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟯 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 for Saturday’s wheel class
Reel captionA short opener, because little of it shows over the video𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟮: trimming the foot
Carousel captionLabels that match the slides𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝟰: the glaze test
BioOne heading line𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲, then plain details
CommentsA word, not the whole commentThat glaze is 𝘀𝗼 good
DMs and channelsA heading on a long update𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸: two new classes
Story and Reel textUse the editor’s fonts, or paste bold for one word𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 at 7

The pattern holds everywhere: bold marks where to look, and the plain words around it say what you mean. A post where everything is bold gives the eye nowhere to land first.

Reels and carousels: bold as a signpost

On a Reel, the caption sits over the bottom of the video and only its first words show until someone taps it. A bold opener there gets read while the video plays, so make it the label for the whole Reel, such as 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟮 or 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭, and put the explanation after it in plain text. Words you want on the video itself belong in the Reels editor’s text tool, which has fonts of its own.

A carousel has one caption for every slide, so readers have to match the text to the pictures themselves. Bold slide labels do that job: 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝟭 for the raw clay, 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝟮 for the shaped bowl, and so on. Use the Bold style rather than bold italic, so the numbers in the labels come out bold too.

Tip: Write the labels in the same order as the slides, and check them again if you rearrange the slides before posting.

What bold costs on Instagram

Bold letters are characters with identities of their own, and three things on Instagram notice the difference.

  • Search: Instagram has said it matches what people type against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. People type plain letters, so a word that appears only as 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 may not be found by someone looking for ceramics. Bold the hook and leave the topic words plain.
  • Listening: screen readers may read each bold letter by its full Unicode name, spell the word out or skip it. A bold first line with plain sentences after it keeps the post usable for someone listening.
  • Copying: a bold price or class time copies as maths characters, which a calculator or a booking form may not accept as numbers.

None of this is a reason to avoid bold, only a reason to keep it short. A few bold words on a post cost almost nothing; a bold caption from top to bottom costs all three.

Questions people ask

Can I make text bold on Instagram without pasting it?

Not in captions, bios, comments or DMs, which have no formatting options at all. The Story and Reels editors have fonts of their own for text placed on the picture or video, but nothing for the caption underneath. Pasting Unicode bold is the usual way round it.

Does pasted bold work in Reels captions?

Yes. The caption box under a Reel takes bold letters like any other caption. Only the first words show over the video until someone taps, so keep the bold part short enough to fit there.

Why is the number in my bold text still thin?

You’re probably using bold italic or bold cursive. Unicode has bold digits only for the two upright styles, so in slanted or script bold the numbers stay ordinary. Switch the line to Bold or Bold (serif) when the number needs to stand out.

Does bold text look the same on iPhone and Android?

The characters are identical, but each phone draws them with its own fonts, so weight and shape vary a little. These bold letters have been in Unicode since 2001, so current phones show them; only very old devices tend to show boxes instead.

How do I change bold text after posting?

Edit the caption, delete the bold words and paste or type new ones; there’s no setting that turns the bold off. Your bio can be edited any time and your name twice in 14 days. Comments can’t be edited, so delete and repost those.
