Cursive font generator

A cursive font generator turns your words into script letters, like ๐’ฏ๐’ฝ๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐“€ ๐“Žโ„ด๐“Š, that you can paste into an Instagram bio, name or caption. Nothing gets installed. Each letter is replaced by a script character from Unicode's set of maths letters, and since those characters are part of the text, the cursive look stays put when you paste it.

Where they work

Cursive font generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram nameWorksThe name field takes script letters. It sits right above your bio, so two or three cursive words there get noticed without making the profile hard to read.
Instagram bioWorksGood for a heading line or a sign-off. A full bio in lowercase script is slow to read on a phone, so keep the details in plain letters.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workHandles accept aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, full stops and underscores only, so a cursive username is impossible. Keep the handle plain and put the cursive in your name.
Captions, comments and DMsWorksScript letters display on current phones and computers. Digits and punctuation stay upright, since Unicode has no cursive numbers.
HashtagsDoesn't work#๐“โ„ด๐“‹โ„ฏ is a different string of characters from #love, so it usually won't count toward the tag people follow. Write tags in plain letters.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook asks for the name you go by in everyday life and doesn't allow symbols or unusual capitalization. Styled letters break those rules, so a cursive profile name is turned down.
Facebook posts and MessengerWorksCursive shows up in posts, comments and chats. It suits a short greeting or sign-off better than a long post.

What this cursive actually is

The letters come from Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols, a block added in Unicode 3.1 in 2001 so mathematicians could tell symbols apart by style. In a formula, a script ๐’œ and a plain A can stand for different things. The generator's Cursive style uses that script set, and Bold cursive uses the bold script set.

Because they were designed as maths symbols, Unicode advises against using them to style ordinary writing. Social apps show them happily, but software that reads text, such as search and screen readers, often doesn't treat ๐“โ„ด๐“‹โ„ฏ as the word love.

Why a few letters look out of place

Eleven script letters already existed in Unicode before 2001: the capitals B, E, F, H, I, L, M and R, and the small e, g and o. They had been encoded as stand-alone technical symbols in the Letterlike Symbols block, so the new script set left reserved gaps at those spots instead of encoding them twice.

A careful generator fills each gap with the older character, which is why โ„‹โ„ฏ๐“๐“โ„ด uses three of them in five letters. On some phones those older characters come from a different font than their neighbours, so โ„‹ can look larger or โ„ฏ lighter than the rest of the word. A careless generator is worse: it uses the empty, reserved slots, and you get boxes exactly where those letters should be.

Tip: Bold cursive has no gaps. Every letter from ๐“ to ๐”ƒ comes from one set, so if your word is full of e, o, H or B, the bold version will look more even.

Plain cursive or bold cursive?

Plain script has thin hairline strokes. It looks elegant when large, but at bio size the thin parts can almost disappear, especially in lowercase letters like ๐“‚ and ๐“ƒ. Bold script keeps the loops and fills them out, so it holds up better on a small screen.

A simple rule: bold cursive for a name or heading, plain cursive for a short sign-off. If you want a second line underneath, small caps such as สœแด€ษดแด…แดแด€แด…แด‡ แดกษชแด›สœ สŸแดแด แด‡ sit well with either, because they stay easy to read.

When cursive stops helping

  • Long text: script is slow to read past a few words, and a whole caption in it tends to get skimmed.
  • Numbers: there are no cursive digits, so prices, dates and times sit upright in the middle of a slanted line, as the table above shows.
  • Search: people type plain letters, so a business name that only appears in cursive may not match what they search for.
  • Screen readers: many read these characters one by one or skip them, so a cursive caption can be lost on someone listening to it.
  • Codes and addresses: if people copy a discount code or email address written in cursive, they copy the cursive characters too, and the code or address won't work.

Questions people ask

Can I make my Instagram username cursive?

No. Instagram usernames only use aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, full stops and underscores. Put the cursive version in your name field, which accepts it, and keep the username plain so people can type it to find or tag you.

Is this the same as joined-up cursive handwriting?

Not quite. In handwriting, and in installable cursive fonts, letters are designed to join. These pasted letters are separate characters with nothing linking them, so a word looks like formal script with small gaps between letters rather than one flowing line.

How do I type in cursive on my phone?

The standard iPhone and Android keyboards can't type these characters. Generate the text here, copy it and paste it where you want it. Some third-party keyboard apps offer fancy-font modes, but they produce the same Unicode characters, with the same limits.

Can I use this cursive in Word, Google Docs or Canva?

You can paste it and it keeps its look, but for documents and designs an installable script font is the better tool. Google Fonts has free ones, such as Dancing Script and Great Vibes; once a font is installed or added to your app, you type in it directly like any other font.
