Strikethrough text generator

Type below to get text with a line through it, like g̶o̶i̶n̶g̶ t̶o̶ b̶e̶d̶ e̶a̶r̶l̶y̶, and paste it into a caption, bio, comment or chat that has no formatting button. The line isn’t formatting or a font. After every character except spaces, the generator adds a mark Unicode calls the combining long stroke overlay, and the mark travels with the text wherever it’s pasted.

Where they work

Strikethrough text generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram captions and commentsWorksThe marks paste and display on current phones. In some fonts the strokes join into one line; in others you’ll see a small gap between letters.
Instagram bioWorksA crossed-out word makes a quick joke in a bio, as in c̶o̶f̶f̶e̶e̶ tea person. Keep it to a word or two so the rest reads normally.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workUsernames stick to a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores. A stroke mark isn’t allowed, so there’s no way to cross out a handle.
Hashtags and @mentionsDoesn't workThe marks turn the tag into a different string of characters, so a struck-through hashtag won’t reliably count as the plain one, and a struck-through @name won’t reliably tag the account.
Facebook posts, comments and MessengerWorksPasted strikethrough shows in posts, comments and chats. It’s handy for updating an earlier post without hiding what it used to say.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook’s name rules exclude symbols and call for the name you use in daily life, so a crossed-out name won’t pass. Keep strikethrough for posts and comments.
WhatsApp, Slack and DiscordPartlyPasted marks show, but these apps have their own strikethrough: ~text~ in WhatsApp and Slack, ~~text~~ in Discord. The built-in kind keeps normal letters, so search still finds the words.

Strikethrough or slashed?

Both styles add one mark after each character. Strikethrough uses U+0336, a horizontal stroke through the middle of the letter. Slashed uses U+0338, the combining long solidus overlay, which cuts each letter on a diagonal.

StyleExampleReads as
Strikethroughs̶o̶l̶d̶ o̶u̶t̶Crossed out: deleted, changed or no longer true
Slasheds̸o̸l̸d̸ o̸u̸t̸Cancelled or refused, closer to a “no” sign
Underlines̲o̲l̲d̲ o̲u̲t̲Emphasis, though it can be mistaken for a link
Overlines̅o̅l̅d̅ o̅u̅t̅Decoration; it has no everyday meaning

Every mark is a character of its own, so the text grows behind the scenes: “clean the house” is 15 characters, while c̶l̶e̶a̶n̶ t̶h̶e̶ h̶o̶u̶s̶e̶ is 28. Spaces get no mark, so each word is struck on its own, and whether the strokes meet inside a word depends on the reader’s font.

What a crossed-out word tells readers

Strikethrough is an editing mark. On paper, a line through a word means “delete this”, but unlike blacking it out, it leaves the old word readable. That’s the point: the reader sees both what changed and what it changed from.

Some fields use it that way on purpose. Many legislatures print proposed amendments with removed words struck through and new words underlined, so readers can see exactly what a change does. On the web, HTML has two tags for it: del marks text that has been removed from a document, and s marks text that is no longer accurate or relevant, such as an old price.

Online, it also became a joke format: write the honest thought, strike it out and follow it with the polite one. The line pretends to take the words back while making sure everyone reads them.

Ways to use it in posts

  • A joke correction, where the crossed-out part is the honest one: “Sunday plan: c̶l̶e̶a̶n̶ t̶h̶e̶ h̶o̶u̶s̶e̶ nap.”
  • A visible update. When an event moves, “F̶r̶i̶d̶a̶y̶ Saturday” tells followers what changed, which a quiet edit wouldn’t.
  • A price that has dropped: R̶s̶ 1̶,̶2̶0̶0̶ Rs 799. Only cross out a price you really charged, and write the new one in plain text so it can be read and copied.
  • Sold-out stock left in a list, such as b̶l̶u̶e̶ m̶u̶g̶, so people can see what’s gone without asking.
  • Progress: days ticked off a 30-day challenge, or goals you’ve finished.

Apps that have a real strikethrough

Pasted strikethrough is a workaround for places without formatting, such as Instagram captions and comments. Where an app has a real strikethrough, use that instead: the words stay ordinary letters, the line runs through the spaces as well, and search, copying and screen readers all treat the text as text.

AppHow to strike text through
WhatsApp and SlackPut a tilde on each side: ~like this~
Discord, Reddit and GitHubPut two tildes on each side: ~~like this~~
Google DocsSelect the text, then press Alt+Shift+5, or ⌘+Shift+X on a Mac
Excel on WindowsSelect the cell, then press Ctrl+5

Tip: Not sure whether a chat app can format text? Select a word in the message box and look at the menu that appears. If it offers formatting, use that rather than pasted characters.

Crossed out, but still read aloud

A strikethrough only means something to people who can see it. Screen readers handle the stroke marks unevenly: depending on the reader and its settings, a struck-through word may be read as if nothing were wrong with it, spelled out letter by letter, or broken up by the name of the mark. A listener can easily miss that it was crossed out at all.

So when the crossing-out carries information, say it in words as well. “Was Rs 1,200, now Rs 799” works for everyone, and “moved to Saturday” is clearer than a struck-through Friday on its own.

Questions people ask

Why is there a gap in the line between words?

The generator only marks visible characters, because a stroke attached to a space doesn’t display reliably. Each word gets its own line as a result. For one unbroken line through a whole sentence, use an app’s built-in strikethrough where there is one.

Why did some letters lose their line after I edited the text?

Each stroke is a separate character that follows its letter. Depending on the app, backspace may delete a letter and its stroke together or one at a time, so edits can leave letters without a line, or strokes in the wrong place. It’s easier to fix the plain text and convert it again.

Does strikethrough text work on Facebook too?

Yes. The same characters show in Facebook posts, comments and Messenger, with the same limits as on Instagram: no struck-through profile names, and hashtags that won’t reliably link to the plain tag.

How do I cross out text on my phone?

Phone keyboards have no strikethrough key, so make the text here, copy it and paste it where you need it. Some apps also have their own option in a formatting menu: in Apple Notes on an iPhone, select the text, tap Aa and choose strikethrough.
