Fonts for Instagram Stories

Instagram’s Story editor has a short list of its own fonts, and you can go beyond it: type below, copy a style and paste it into a Story’s text box. These styles are look-alike Unicode characters, not installable fonts. That’s why tapping a different font in the editor leaves them as they are, while the colour, alignment and background you choose still apply.

Where they work

Instagram story fonts: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Story text boxWorksPasted letters sit in the box alongside anything you type and take its colour, alignment and background. The editor’s font buttons only change the plain letters around them.
Text on ReelsWorksThe Reels editor’s text tool accepts pasted letters in the same way. The caption under a Reel is a separate field, and the styles paste in there too.
@mentionsDoesn't workA tag works only when you type @ and choose the account from Instagram’s suggestions. A styled name matches no account, so nobody is tagged or notified.
HashtagsDoesn't workAdd tags with the hashtag sticker or type them in plain letters. #𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲 looks close to #sale but is a different string of characters, so it leads nowhere.
Replies to your StoryWorksStory replies arrive in your DMs, where styled letters send like ordinary text, so you can answer in the style you posted in.
Highlight namesPartlyThe label under a highlight circle accepts pasted letters, but it’s small and gets cut short, so thin or tiny styles can be hard to make out.
Codes and web addressesDoesn't workViewers usually have to retype what they see, and styled letters are easy to misread. Keep codes plain and put web addresses on a link sticker.

Instagram’s fonts and pasted letters in one Story

Tap Aa in the Story editor and you get Instagram’s text tool: a row of fonts, a colour picker, an alignment button, a button that puts a solid block behind the words, and animation. Those fonts come with the app and cover ordinary letters. A pasted 𝗕 or ⓑ is a separate character they don’t include, so your phone draws it from one of its own fonts instead, and it keeps that shape whichever font you tap.

Colour and the background block apply to every character in the box, styled or not, so a pasted word can still match the rest of the Story. The font buttons reach only the plain letters. Type “𝗚𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 live tonight”, switch fonts, and the first word stays bold while the other two change.

Tip: To mix styles freely, use two text boxes: one in an Instagram font for the details and one holding the pasted line. Each box can be moved, resized and coloured on its own.

Five styles at full-screen size

Story text is large, sits on top of a photo or video, and gets a glance before the viewer taps on. Here is “Going live at 7” in the five styles shown first above, with what happens to the number and how each copes on a busy background.

StyleExampleThe 7Over a busy photo
Bold𝗚𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝟳Bold, to matchHolds up best, because the strokes are heavy
BubbleⒼⓞⓘⓝⓖ ⓛⓘⓥⓔ ⓐⓣ ⑦CircledFine over a plain area; the rings blur into patterns
WideGoing live at 7WidenedClear, but uses a lot of width, so keep it to a few words
Cursive𝒢ℴ𝒾𝓃ℊ 𝓁𝒾𝓋ℯ 𝒶𝓉 7Stays plainThin strokes vanish over detail; turn on the background block
Sparkles✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Going live at 7 *:・゚✧*:・゚✧UntouchedThe words inside are plain, so they follow the font buttons

For a time, a price or a date, bold is the dependable choice, since its 𝟳 is as heavy as its letters. Cursive has no digits of its own, so the number stands upright in a slanted line, and wide text turns even a short phrase into a long one.

Tags, links and codes need plain letters

The parts of a Story that do something when tapped are built from plain text and Instagram’s own stickers. Style those parts and they stop working, however good they look.

  • Mentions: type @, start the name and pick the account from the list. If you want a styled version of the name too, put it in a separate box.
  • Hashtags: add them with the hashtag sticker or type them plain, then style the words around them.
  • Links: use the link sticker. A web address typed into a text box, plain or styled, is just letters on a picture.
  • Codes: viewers have to type a discount code themselves, so write it plain, in capitals, and avoid characters that look alike, such as O and 0 or I and 1.

Keeping styled text readable on a Story

Viewers see your profile picture and name across the top of a Story and a message bar along the bottom, so text placed at the very top or bottom gets covered. Keep styled lines towards the middle, and keep them short.

  • Put the background block behind thin styles such as cursive, which makes them readable over any photo.
  • Use one pasted style per Story. A pasted style plus two of Instagram’s fonts on one screen looks busy rather than designed.
  • Make the styled line the biggest thing on screen and set the details smaller, in plain text.
  • Watch the Story once at normal speed after posting. If you can’t read the styled words before it moves on, your viewers can’t either.

Tip: A Story can’t be edited once it’s shared. If a style comes out wrong, delete the Story and post a corrected one rather than covering the mistake with a sticker.

Getting styled text from this page into a Story

  1. Type your words in the box at the top of this page and copy the style you want.
  2. Open Instagram, start a new Story and choose a photo or video, or a plain coloured background.
  3. Tap Aa, then press and hold inside the text box and tap Paste.
  4. Pick a colour and background, drag the text into place and pinch to resize it.
  5. Tap Done and look at the whole screen before you share it.

Questions people ask

Can I add more fonts to Instagram’s Story text tool?

No. Instagram chooses the fonts in the text tool and builds them into the app, and there’s no way to install your own. Pasting Unicode styles is the usual workaround. For a real typeface, set the text in a design app, save it as an image and add that image to your Story.

Why doesn’t my pasted text change when I pick another font?

The pasted characters aren’t part of Instagram’s fonts, so your phone draws them from its own fonts whichever button you tap. Plain words in the same box do switch. To change the pasted part, copy a different style from this page and paste it over the old one.

Can I change the font after posting a Story?

No. Instagram doesn’t let you edit a Story once it’s shared. Open it, tap More and choose Delete, then post the corrected version. The new Story gets a fresh 24 hours.

Do these styles work for text on Reels?

Yes. The Reels editor has a text tool much like the Story one, and pasted letters show there and stay on the video for as long as you set the text to appear. They paste into the caption under the Reel as well.

Which style works best for a Story announcement?

Bold, for the one line that matters. It’s heavy enough to read over a photo, and its numbers match its letters. Put the details in plain text with one of Instagram’s fonts, and use stickers for anything people should tap.
