Telegram fonts and formatting
Telegram fonts come in two kinds. In messages, Telegram has its own formatting: select the words and choose bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, monospace or spoiler. Your name, bio and channel title have no formatting at all, so for those, type below and paste one of these styles. They're look-alike Unicode characters rather than installable fonts, which is why they keep their look in plain text fields.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chats, groups and channel posts | Works | Pasted styles display, but Telegram's own formatting suits messages better: the words stay normal text, so chat search finds them and screen readers read them properly. |
| Your name | Works | First and last name take styled characters. Anyone who has saved you as a contact sees the name they saved instead, so not everyone sees your styling. |
| Username (@) | Doesn't work | Telegram usernames allow aโz, 0โ9 and underscores only, with at least five characters. Capitals make no difference, and styled letters are refused. |
| Bio | Works | The bio has no formatting menu, so a pasted style is the only way to make a word in it bold or italic. |
| Channel and group titles | Works | Titles accept styled text. Search matches the letters people type, so give a public channel at least one plain word people would look for. |
| Channel and group descriptions | Works | A description is plain text too. A styled first line works as a heading; keep links and @usernames under it plain so they still open. |
| Codes, links and bot commands | Doesn't work | A promo code, link or /command in styled characters fails once someone copies or taps it. Native monospace is the better tool: in Telegram's phone apps, a tap on monospace text copies it. |
Telegram's own formatting
Every Telegram app can format text in a message before you send it. Type the message, select the words, and pick a style from the menu that appears: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, monospace, spoiler, quote or link.
Telegram Desktop also has keyboard shortcuts and accepts typed marks. On a Mac, use Cmd in place of Ctrl.
| Style | Shortcut | Typed marks |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Ctrl+B | **text** |
| Italic | Ctrl+I | __text__ |
| Strikethrough | Ctrl+Shift+X | ~~text~~ |
| Monospace | Ctrl+Shift+M | `text` |
| Spoiler | Ctrl+Shift+P | ||text|| |
Underline, quotes and links are in the selection menu too. Formatting stays with a message when it's forwarded, so a channel post keeps its bold headings and spoilers wherever it ends up.
Which to use where
Telegram's formatting only exists inside messages and posts. Profiles and channel details are plain text fields, and that's where pasted styles earn their place.
| Where | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chats and groups | Telegram's formatting | The words stay searchable and are read aloud normally |
| Channel posts | Telegram's formatting | Headings, spoilers and quotes survive forwarding |
| Your name and bio | A pasted style | Profile fields have no formatting |
| Channel or group title | A pasted style on one word | The plain words are what search matches |
| Codes and order numbers | Telegram's monospace | A tap copies it cleanly; pasted ๐๐๐๐ copies as the wrong characters |
Two kinds of monospace
Telegram's monospace and the generator's Typewriter style look alike but behave differently. Telegram's is formatting on ordinary characters, and in the phone apps a tap on it copies the text, which is why shops and channels put coupon codes and order numbers in monospace. The Typewriter style is made of maths characters: ๐ฟ๐๐พ๐ผ๐พ๐ท๐ถ looks like PROMO10, but a checkout treats it as a different string and rejects it.
Keep the Typewriter style for places Telegram's formatting can't reach, such as a line in your bio, and never use it for anything someone needs to copy and use.
Styling your name, bio and channel title
Two things limit how far a styled name travels on Telegram. People who have you saved as a contact see the name in their own contact list, not the one you set. And search works on the letters people type, so a name or channel title written entirely in styled characters is harder to find.
- Name: style one part and leave the other plain, such as ๐ ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฎ Bakes or Mira | แดแดแดแด๊ฑ แดษด แดสแด แดส.
- Bio: a short small-caps label, then plain details: สแดแดษชษดษข ษชษด แดแดษดแด ยท orders via @mirabakes.
- Channel title: ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐น๐ design tips styles the word nobody searches for and keeps design tips plain.
- Group title: a symbol frame, such as โฆ Book club โฆ, often looks better than restyled letters and keeps every word searchable.
Tip: Your @username can't be styled, so it's the one thing people can always type to find you. Put it where it's easy to copy, such as the first line of a channel description.
Things Unicode can't fake
Some Telegram formatting has no character-based version at all. A spoiler hides text until each reader taps it, and a quote sets a passage apart as a block. The generator's strikethrough and underline imitate Telegram's with a combining mark after every character, which looks close but breaks at each space, and a screen reader may announce the marks.
So in messages, reach for the formatting menu first. The generator is for the parts of Telegram that don't have one.
Questions people ask
How do I change the font in Telegram?
You can't choose a typeface for the messages you send: each person's app draws text in its own font. To make words look different, use the formatting menu in messages, or paste styled characters into fields without formatting, such as your name and bio.
How do I write bold text in Telegram?
Select the words in your message and choose Bold from the menu. In Telegram Desktop, press Ctrl+B (Cmd+B on a Mac) or type double asterisks around the words, **like this**. For bold in a name or bio, where there's no menu, copy the Bold style from this page.
Can my Telegram username use a fancy font?
No. A username takes only aโz, 0โ9 and underscores, needs at least five characters, and ignores capitals. Put the styled version in your name, which accepts it.
How do I send a spoiler on Telegram?
Type the message, select the part to hide and choose Spoiler from the formatting menu. In Telegram Desktop, Ctrl+Shift+P does the same, or type double bars around the words, ||like this||. The text stays hidden until each reader taps it.
Why can't my friend use the code I sent?
If the code was pasted from a font generator, it's made of look-alike characters, and the shop or app won't recognise it. Send it again in plain text, ideally as monospace, so they can copy it with a tap.
