Bold text generator
Type below and copy bold text into places that have no bold button: Instagram captions, bios and comments, or a Facebook post. Each bold letter, such as 𝗯, is a separate Unicode character, not a font or formatting, which is why it stays bold after you paste it. Use it for a heading or a key phrase and leave the rest plain.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram captions and comments | Works | Instagram offers no formatting in captions or comments, so pasted characters are the only way to get bold there. Use it for a headline or a label, not whole paragraphs. |
| Instagram bio | Works | Bold characters paste into the bio. One bold line, such as what you sell, gives it a heading; keep the words people search for in plain letters too. |
| Instagram username | Doesn't work | Handles can only contain a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores, so no bold letter will be accepted. |
| Facebook posts and comments | Works | Bold characters show in posts, comments and Page updates on phones and computers, since everyday posts have no bold button of their own. |
| Facebook profile name | Doesn't work | Facebook wants the name you use in everyday life and refuses unusual characters in it, so a bold profile name won't go through. |
| Hashtags and @mentions | Doesn't work | A bold hashtag is a different string from the plain tag, so it won't add your post to that tag, and a bold @mention can't link to an account. Type both normally. |
| WhatsApp and Discord | Works | Pasted bold works, but both apps have real bold: one asterisk each side in WhatsApp (*like this*), two in Discord (**like this**). Real bold keeps words searchable, so use it there. |
Six bold styles and the mood of each
Each style below is a complete bold alphabet from Unicode's maths letters. They differ in mood, and in whether numbers turn bold as well.
| Style | Example | Numbers | Feels like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bold | 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘂 | 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 | Clean and modern, close to the app's own type |
| Bold (serif) | 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐮 | 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 | A newspaper or book heading |
| Bold italic | 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙪 | 2026, plain | Fast and sporty |
| Bold italic (serif) | 𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒖 | 2026, plain | A magazine pull quote |
| Bold cursive | 𝓝𝓮𝔀 𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓾 | 2026, plain | A signature or a wedding sign |
| Bold Old English | 𝕹𝖊𝖜 𝖒𝖊𝖓𝖚 | 2026, plain | A tattoo studio or a metal band |
Only the two upright styles come with bold digits. On the plus side, none of the six has gaps. Plain italic, cursive and Old English each borrow a few letters from older symbol sets, but every bold letter comes from one unbroken alphabet, so nothing in a bold word looks out of place.
Bold or capitals?
Bold and capitals both raise the volume, but not in the same way. Most readers get through lowercase faster than capitals, largely because nearly everything we read is in lowercase. So bold lowercase is noticed first and still read quickly, while a line of capitals slows people down, and bold capitals are louder still.
| Version | How it reads |
|---|---|
| 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘂 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 | Noticed first and easy to read |
| NEW MENU DROPS FRIDAY | Loud and slower to read, with no extra weight |
| 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗨 𝗗𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗦 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗬 | The loudest option; in a comment or DM it reads as shouting |
| 𝗡𝗘𝗪 menu drops Friday | One bold capital word as a tag, with the rest plain |
Bold capitals suit one short word, like 𝗡𝗘𝗪 or 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗢𝗨𝗧, and almost never a full sentence. Bold Old English shouldn't be set in capitals at all: 𝕹𝕰𝖂 𝕸𝕰𝕹𝖀 is close to unreadable.
Write first, convert last
Once text is bold, your phone stops treating it as words, and that changes how you should work:
- Spell check and autocorrect can't help. They don't recognise bold characters as words, so a typo made before converting stays in the post. Proofread the plain version, then convert it.
- Editing means retyping. Nothing turns bold off again, so to change one word you delete the bold text and paste a new version.
- Keep a plain copy of anything you convert, such as a bio, in your notes. Then you can change a word later without rebuilding the whole thing.
Tip: Type only the words you want in bold into the box above, then paste them into the plain text you've already written. The less you convert, the less there is to go wrong.
Where Instagram and Facebook already use bold
Both apps already set some text in bold, and pasted bold competes with it. On Instagram, usernames are bold in comments and at the start of captions, and your name on your profile is bold too. On Facebook, people's names above posts and comments are bold.
That has two practical effects. In the feed, a caption that opens with bold words runs straight on from your bold username, so the two can blur together; a plain first word or an emoji puts a gap between them. And bolding your name with pasted characters changes less than you'd expect on your profile, where it's already heavy, so a bold first line in your bio usually does more.
Questions people ask
How do I make only part of my Instagram bio bold?
Convert just that part here, copy it, and paste it into your bio where you want it, then type the rest in plain letters around it. A bold first line with plain lines underneath is a common layout.
Can I bold a hashtag or an @mention?
Not if you want them to work. A tag or a mention only links when it's typed in plain characters. Bold the words around it instead, such as a bold heading on the line above a plain #bakery.
Can I make text bold and underlined?
Yes. Convert your words to bold, paste the bold result back into the box and pick Underline or Strikethrough. Those styles add a line mark after every character, so they sit on top of bold. Other letter styles won't stack, because each letter can only be one character.
Do bold letters work in dark mode?
Yes. They're text, so they follow the app's text colour: dark on a light background and light on a dark one. That's one way they differ from emoji, which keep their own colours whatever the mode.
