Italic text generator

An italic text generator turns your words into slanted letters, like 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴, for places with no italic button: Instagram captions and bios, comments and Facebook posts. Type below and copy one of the italic styles. Nothing is being formatted. Each letter becomes a separate italic character taken from Unicode's maths letters, so the slant stays put when you paste.

Where they work

Italic text generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram captions and commentsWorksItalics display on current phones. They suit an aside, a title or a single word you'd stress aloud; a whole caption in them is slow going.
Instagram bio and nameWorksBoth fields accept italic characters, and a slanted tagline under a plain name is an easy look to read.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workUsernames take a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores and nothing else, so an italic username can't be saved.
Facebook posts, comments and MessengerWorksFacebook offers no italic button in posts or chats, and pasted italic letters show there like any other text.
Hashtags and @mentionsDoesn't work#𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 is spelled with different characters from #plants, so it isn't the tag people follow. Keep tags and mentions plain.
Word, Google Docs and emailPartlyThe letters paste in, but these apps have a real italic button (Ctrl+I, or Cmd+I on a Mac), which keeps words searchable and spell-checked.

True italic or slanted print

The generator has two plain italic styles, and they slant in different ways. The serif style is a true italic in most fonts: its letters are redrawn rather than tilted, the way italic type grew out of handwriting. The sans-serif style is closer to upright letters leaning to the right, which typographers call an oblique.

PlainSerif italicSans-serif italicWhat usually changes
a𝑎𝘢The serif version loses its top hook and becomes a single round bowl
f𝑓𝘧The serif f often drops below the line like a hook
v, w𝑣 𝑤𝘷 𝘸Serif italic often rounds the points into curves

Pick serif italic for a bookish, slightly formal feel, and sans-serif italic when the slanted words should blend in with ordinary text. At caption size thin italic strokes can look faint; the two bold italic styles keep the slant and hold up better on a small screen.

What italics tell a reader

Italics carry meaning in print, and readers pick up the same signals in a caption. These habits are worth borrowing:

UseExampleWhy italic
A titleFinally finished 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘵Most style guides set books, films, albums and podcasts in italics
A borrowed wordLong lunch, very 𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘰Words from another language are often set in italics
A word as a wordPlease stop saying 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺Shows you mean the word itself, not its meaning
A thought𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘐 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴Sets the inner voice apart from what's said aloud
A sound or an action𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺Reads like a stage direction

Each of these works because only a few words lean. Once a whole caption is italic, nothing in it is set apart and the signal disappears.

Species and plant names, done properly

Scientific names are one place where italics aren't a style choice but the convention. Plant, bird and wildlife accounts get them right like this:

  • Italicize the genus and the species, with a capital only on the genus: 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘢, 𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘺𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘌𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢.
  • After the first mention, the genus can shrink to its initial: 𝘔. 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘢.
  • Keep cultivar names upright and in single quotes: 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘢 ‘Thai Constellation’.
  • Leave short words such as sp., spp., var. and subsp. upright too, along with common names like Swiss cheese plant.

Tip: The generator slants everything you type, so build a scientific name in two goes: generate the genus and species, then type any cultivar name or var. after it in plain letters. Keep the hashtag, #monsteradeliciosa, plain as well.

Questions people ask

How do I italicize text on Instagram?

Instagram has no italic option, so make the text here, copy the style you like and paste it into your caption, comment or bio. The slant is part of each character, so it survives posting and editing.

How do I italicize just one word in a caption?

Write the caption as usual, then generate only the word you want slanted, copy it and paste it over the plain word. Going word by word keeps the rest of the caption searchable and easy to read.

Why does the h look different in the serif italic style?

Unicode never gave the serif italic set its own small h, because ℎ, the symbol for the Planck constant, already existed. The generator uses that older symbol, and some devices draw it from a different font. The sans-serif and bold italics have no such gap.

Is italic the same as cursive?

No. Italic is slanted print in which each letter stays simple. Cursive, or script, imitates handwriting with loops and flourishes, like 𝒽ℯ𝓁𝓁ℴ. Italic reads faster; cursive is more decorative.

Why don't numbers turn italic?

Unicode's maths letters include digits in only five styles, all of them upright, so a year or a price stays straight inside an italic line. Spell a short number out if the slant matters to you.
