Discord fonts to copy and paste
Discord fonts are styled letters, such as ๐ฏ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ or ๊ฑแดแดสส แดแดแด๊ฑ, that you paste into a display name, a server nickname, a status or a channel name. They're Unicode characters rather than a font, so they work without Nitro or a bot. In messages you rarely need them, because Discord's own formatting already does bold, italics, underline and strikethrough.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Username | Doesn't work | Discord usernames only take lowercase aโz, 0โ9, underscores and periods, so a styled username is refused. Put the styling in your display name instead. |
| Display name | Works | Styled letters and emoji are both allowed. It's the name beside your messages in every server where you haven't set a nickname, so one styled word usually reads better than a whole line. |
| Server nickname | Partly | Discord allows it, but each server sets its own rules. Many ask for names people can type or โpingโ, and moderators may reset a nickname they can't read. |
| Channel names | Works | Accepted, and one of the most common places for fancy text on Discord. Text channel names are lowercased automatically, but small caps and bold capitals come through unchanged. |
| Server and role names | Works | Both accept styled letters. A fancy role name looks good in the member list, but people may struggle to find it when they type @ to mention the role. |
| Status and About Me | Works | Your custom status and the About Me box on your profile both take styled characters, which makes them a good home for one short styled line. |
| Messages | Works | Styled letters show in chat, but Discord's Markdown gives you real bold, italics, underline and strikethrough that stay normal words for search, screen readers and copying. |
Markdown first, fancy letters second
Discord has real formatting built in: type a few symbols around your words and the app styles them when the message is sent. The letters underneath stay ordinary, so the message can still be searched, a screen reader reads it as words, and anyone who copies it gets clean text. Pasted styles give up all three, so in chat they only make sense for looks Markdown can't produce, such as cursive or Old English.
| Type this | You get |
|---|---|
| **text** | Bold |
| *text* or _text_ | Italics |
| __text__ | Underline |
| ~~text~~ | Strikethrough |
| ||text|| | A spoiler, hidden until someone clicks or taps it |
| `text` | Inline code in a fixed-width font |
| # text at the start of a line | A large heading; ## and ### give smaller ones |
| -# text at the start of a line | Small, muted subtext |
| > text at the start of a line | A quote |
Markers can be stacked: ***text*** gives bold italics and __**text**__ gives bold underlined text. None of this works in display names, nicknames, channel names or statuses, and that's exactly where pasted styles earn their keep.
Nitro name styles or pasted letters?
Nitro includes Display Name Styles: real fonts, colours and effects for your display name, chosen under Edit Profile in your settings. Because the app draws them, they look smoother than any pasted character. They only cover your display name, though, and they need Nitro. Without it you can preview the styles but not save one.
| Question | Nitro name styles | Pasted Unicode letters |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Part of a Nitro subscription | Free |
| Where it shows | Your display name only | Any text field: nicknames, channels, roles, status |
| What changes | Font, colour and effect | Letter shapes only |
| On phones | Shown, but the effects don't animate | The same as on desktop |
| Typing and search | Your name stays plain text underneath | Others can't type the styled version |
Mixing the two rarely pays off. Discord's own FAQ notes that some symbols don't display with the custom fonts and fall back to gg sans, the app's standard typeface, so fancy letters inside a styled name may simply lose the font you chose.
Nicknames people can still ping
To mention someone, you type @ and the start of their name, and nobody can type ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฌ on a normal keyboard. Discord's @ list also matches usernames, which helps, but a moderator scrolling the member list still has to work out who ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฌ is. That's why many servers ask for names that can be typed, or pinged, and some run bots that rename members whose names can't be typed.
- Start with plain letters and style the rest, as in milo | ๐ด๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ด, so the part people type comes first.
- Read the server's rules before you change your nickname. Name rules usually sit there, and breaking them can get your nickname reset.
- Skip glitch text in names. The stacked marks spill over the names above and below in the member list, which is why so many servers ban it.
- Never copy another member's name in look-alike letters. Discord counts impersonation as a rule break, whatever characters you use.
Building aesthetic channel names
Text channel names are forced into lowercase, with hyphens in place of spaces, so servers reach for characters that rule leaves alone. Small caps already count as lowercase letters in Unicode, and bold capitals have no lowercase form at all, so both come through unchanged. An emoji and a divider in front finish the look.
| Plain name | Styled version |
|---|---|
Tip: Styled channel names can be harder to reach with the quick switcher (Ctrl+K, or Cmd+K on a Mac) or to link by typing #, since both rely on typing the name. For busy channels, keep the word itself plain and decorate around it, as in ๐ใปrules.
Questions people ask
Can I change the font Discord uses for all text?
Not in the official app. Discord's interface uses its own typeface, gg sans, and the settings let you scale text up or down rather than swap the font. Nitro's Display Name Styles restyle only your display name. For everything else, Markdown and pasted characters are what you have.
Do Discord fonts need Nitro?
No. Pasted Unicode letters are ordinary text, so they work on a free account, in any server, on desktop and on mobile. Nitro adds a separate, paid option: real fonts, colours and effects for your display name only.
Why do some people see boxes instead of my fancy name?
Their device has no font containing those characters, so it draws an empty box in their place. Bold, italic and small caps have the widest support. Black bubbles, boxed letters and look-alikes borrowed from other alphabets are the likeliest to fail on older phones and computers.
How do I make coloured text on Discord?
Ordinary messages can't be coloured. The usual workaround is a code block that starts with ```ansi and contains colour codes, which the desktop app shows in colour; phones may show it as plain text. Code blocks tagged with a language such as diff colour some lines too. Both are fiddly, so keep them for fun rather than announcements.
Is fancy text against Discord's rules?
Not in itself. Each server sets its own name rules, and many limit names that can't be read or mentioned. What Discord's own rules do forbid is impersonation, and copying someone's name with look-alike letters counts.
