Fonts for Twitter and X

Twitter fonts are styled Unicode letters you paste into X, the site formerly called Twitter: posts, replies, your bio and your display name. Type below, pick a style and copy it. They aren't real fonts, just different characters, so everyone sees them. One cost is particular to X: each styled letter counts as two of your 280 characters.

Where they work

Twitter fonts: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Posts and repliesWorksStyled letters post and display normally, but each one counts as two characters, so a post written entirely in them holds about half as much.
Display nameWorksThe name above your @handle accepts styled letters. It appears on every post and reply you write, so keep it recognizable.
@handleDoesn't workHandles allow only the letters A to Z, numbers and underscores, up to 15 characters, so a styled handle is impossible.
BioWorksStyled text works in the bio. Leave the words people might search for, such as your job, field or city, in plain letters.
HashtagsDoesn't workA tag typed in styled letters either fails to link or becomes a different tag from the plain one, so it won't join the conversation you meant.
Direct messagesWorksStyled text sends in DMs like any other text, and the reader sees whatever their device's fonts can draw.

Why styled letters cost double

X doesn't count every character the same way. Its counting rules, published in its open-source twitter-text library, give a weight of one to the first 4,352 code points of Unicode, which cover Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and many other scripts, plus a handful of spaces, dashes, quotation marks and prime marks. Everything else weighs two. Styled letters sit far beyond that range, in Unicode's maths block, so each one costs double.

StyleExampleCounts as

Bold๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„๐˜€25
StrikethroughBฬถrฬถeฬถaฬถkฬถiฬถnฬถgฬถ nฬถeฬถwฬถsฬถ25, a plain letter plus a line character for each
Small capsส™ส€แด‡แด€แด‹ษชษดษข ษดแด‡แดก๊œฑ19, as some small capitals count one and others two
Upside downsสวu ฦƒuแด‰สžษวษนแ—บ15, since most flipped letters are phonetic letters that count one
Wide๏ผข๏ฝ’๏ฝ…๏ฝ๏ฝ‹๏ฝ‰๏ฝŽ๏ฝ‡ใ€€๏ฝŽ๏ฝ…๏ฝ—๏ฝ“26, as even the wide space counts two

So a post written entirely in bold letters stops at 140 letters, though spaces and ordinary punctuation still count one each. Glitch text costs most of all, because every stacked mark is a character of its own. If you want both style and room, style the first line and write the rest plainly.

Real bold and italic, for some posts

At the time of writing, X offers real bold and italic only to paying Premium subscribers, inside its editor for longer posts, and its Articles feature adds headings and lists. Standard posts, replies, bios and display names have no formatting buttons for anyone, which is why pasted Unicode letters are everywhere on X.

When you do have the real thing, use it. Formatting applied by X keeps the ordinary letters underneath, so search, translation and screen readers handle the words normally. Unicode letters only look the same.

Why styled letters don't match X's own font

X has set its text in Chirp, a custom typeface Twitter introduced in 2021. Fonts made for an app's interface rarely include Unicode's maths letters, so your phone or browser usually fills them in from another font, often one made for maths. That's why a bold word in a post can look heavier, wider or simply different from the regular text around it, and why it changes from an iPhone to an Android phone to a laptop.

Keeping posts readable for everyone

Screen readers usually announce the display name before each post and reply, so a styled name gets spelled out or skipped again and again in every thread you join. Styled words inside a post have the same problem: depending on the app and the reader, they're read one character at a time, announced with long names such as โ€œmathematical sans-serif bold small bโ€, or passed over.

  • Write the words that carry the meaning in plain letters, and style one or two around them.
  • Describe every image in plain words. X lets you add a description before you post, and images that have one show a small ALT badge.
  • Keep hashtags, @mentions and links plain so they still work.
  • If your display name is styled, include your name in plain letters too, or keep the styling to a single word.

Questions people ask

Does X have a bold button?

Only for some accounts. Real bold and italic come with X Premium at the time of writing, and they work in the editor for longer posts. Everyone else, and every bio, display name and standard post, relies on pasted Unicode letters like the ones above.

Why did my post hit the 280 limit so quickly?

Styled letters count as two characters each under X's rules, so a post in bold holds only about half the letters of a plain one. Style just the opening words and the rest of the post costs the normal amount.

Can I use a fancy font in my @handle?

No. Handles take only A to Z, numbers and underscores. Put the style in your display name instead, the name shown in bold above your handle on your profile and your posts.

What font does X itself use?

Chirp, a typeface made for Twitter and introduced in 2021. You can't pick a different typeface in the app. X's display settings let you make text bigger or smaller, which resizes Chirp but never swaps it for another font.

Do styled posts show up in X search?

Not reliably. People search with plain letters, and ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„๐˜€ is a different string of characters from news, so a keyword written only in styled letters can be missed. Keep the words you want to be found for in plain text.
