Reddit fonts and text formatting

For Reddit posts and comments you rarely need a font generator, because Reddit’s Markdown already turns **bold**, *italic*, ~~strikethrough~~ and `code` into real formatting. Styled Unicode letters, like the ones below, are for places Markdown doesn’t reach, such as post titles and your display name. They’re look-alike characters rather than fonts, so use them lightly.

Where they work

Reddit fonts: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Post and comment textWorksMarkdown handles bold, italic, strikethrough, code, superscript and spoilers here. Pasted letters display too, but Markdown gives real formatting, so it’s the better choice.
Post titlesWorksTitles take no formatting, so pasted letters are the only way to style one. Each community sets its own rules for titles, so read them first.
UsernameDoesn't workUsernames use letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, 3 to 20 characters, and Reddit generally doesn’t let you change one after sign-up.
Display nameWorksThe display name on your profile is separate from your username and accepts styled letters. Posts and comments still show your u/ username.
Community namesDoesn't workNames after r/ use only letters, numbers and underscores, so a community with a styled name can’t be created.
User flairPartlyOnly in communities that let members write their own flair. Where they do, styled letters usually show beside your name there.
ChatsWorksStyled letters send as ordinary characters in Reddit chats, so they arrive looking the way you pasted them.

What Reddit’s Markdown already does

Reddit posts and comments are written in Markdown, a handful of plain symbols that become formatting when the post is displayed. On the website you can also click the formatting buttons above the text box instead of typing the symbols. Here is what each effect takes, next to the pasted look-alike from the generator.

EffectMarkdownPasted look-alike
Bold**solved**𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱
Italic*solved* or _solved_𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥
Bold italic***solved***𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙙
Strikethrough~~solved~~s̶o̶l̶v̶e̶d̶
Inline code`solved`𝚜𝚘𝚕𝚟𝚎𝚍
Superscript^solved, or ^(two words)ˢᵒˡᵛᵉᵈ
Spoiler>!solved!<No look-alike
Heading# Solved, at the start of a lineNo look-alike

When both are available, Markdown is the better tool. Under the formatting, the word is still the plain word solved, so search can find it, copying it gives clean text, and a screen reader says it normally. Each look-alike is a string of other characters that only resembles the word.

Where pasted letters earn a place on Reddit

  • Post titles. A title takes no formatting, and asterisks in one show up as typed, so a pasted 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 word is the only way to stress part of it.
  • Your display name. Unlike the username, it can be changed whenever you like, and styled letters are accepted.
  • User flair, in communities that let members edit it. A styled word can sit beside your name there.

Even there, go lightly. Titles are how people find posts, through Reddit’s search and through search engines, and a title in styled characters may not match the plain words they type. Style one word at most, and never the word someone would search for.

Tip: Many communities ask for titles in a set format, such as a tag in square brackets at the start, and moderators can remove posts that ignore it. Check the community’s rules before you decorate a title.

When Markdown formats something you didn’t mean

Markdown sometimes acts on text you meant literally. These are the usual surprises, with the fix for each:

  • A line that starts with a year and a full stop, like “1999. Best summer ever”, can turn into a numbered list. Type 1999\. with a backslash before the full stop.
  • Asterisks between numbers, as in 2*3*4, can disappear and turn the 3 italic. Write 2\*3\*4 to keep them.
  • A line beginning with # and a space becomes a heading, and one beginning with > becomes a quote. A backslash in front keeps the symbol.
  • A single line break may be ignored in some views, which runs two lines together. Leave a blank line between paragraphs.

The backslash is Markdown’s escape character: the symbol straight after it is shown exactly as typed, and the backslash itself disappears.

Old Reddit, the current site and the app

Most Markdown looks the same everywhere, but a few things differ between old.reddit.com, the current website and the Reddit app.

  • Code blocks: three backticks above and below a block work on the current site and in the app, but old Reddit doesn’t show them as a block. Indenting every line by four spaces works in all three.
  • Superscript: ^word raises a single word; for several words, wrap them as ^(like this).
  • Editors: the website’s text box has a rich-text mode with buttons and a Markdown mode where you type the symbols yourself.
  • Pasted letters: these look the same in all three, because they’re characters rather than formatting. How they’re drawn depends on the reader’s device fonts.

Strikethrough and Reddit’s edit habit

Strikethrough has a particular job on Reddit: correcting yourself without hiding what you first wrote. People strike the old text and put the fix after it, as in ~~Tuesday~~ Wednesday, or add a line starting “Edit:” to say what changed. Replies that quoted the original still make sense that way.

Use Markdown’s double tildes for this in comments. Unicode strikethrough, which adds a line-drawing mark after every character, as in T̶u̶e̶s̶d̶a̶y̶, is only worth it in a title or a display name. Screen readers may skip those marks or read them out one by one, so a listener could hear the struck word as if it still stood.

Questions people ask

How do I make text bold on Reddit?

Put two asterisks on each side of the words, **like this**, with no space between the asterisks and the words. On the website you can also select the words and use the bold button. Titles don’t take formatting, so there the only option is pasting bold letters from the generator above.

Why are my asterisks showing instead of bold text?

Usually one of two things. You’re typing in a title, which never uses Markdown, or there’s a space inside the asterisks: ** like this ** stays as typed, while **like this** turns bold. On the website, check which editor mode you’re in, too.

Can I change the font of my Reddit username?

No. Usernames are plain letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, and Reddit generally doesn’t allow a username to be changed. You can set a display name on your profile, which accepts styled letters, but comments and posts still carry your username.

Can I change the font other people see on Reddit?

No. Each reader sees posts in the typeface their own app or browser uses. The only styling that travels with your words is Markdown formatting or pasted characters, and only Markdown keeps the words readable to search and screen readers.

How do I write small text on Reddit?

Use superscript: ^word raises one word and ^(a few words) raises a group, shown smaller and higher than the line. The tiny letters on this site look similar but are separate characters, and the generator has to borrow a look-alike for q.

Is styled Unicode text against Reddit’s rules?

Reddit’s sitewide rules don’t single out styled characters, but each community adds rules of its own, and some restrict how titles may look. Styled titles can also be harder to find in search, so plain titles are the safer habit.
