Small caps generator

Small caps are capital letters drawn at the height of lowercase ones, like ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ. Write your text in the box below and copy the result into a bio, name, caption or comment. Instagram and Facebook have no small-caps setting, and Unicode has no ready-made small-caps alphabet, so the generator assembles one from letters used in phonetic writing. That's why it pastes anywhere.

Where they work

Small caps generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram nameWorksSmall caps make a calm, tidy name. Because they're Latin letters rather than maths symbols, they look closer to normal text than bold or cursive styles do.
Instagram bioWorksGood for a short heading or a label such as ʙᴏᴏᴋɪɴɢꜱ ᴏᴘᴇɴ, with the details below in plain text. A whole bio in small caps loses the word shapes that lowercase gives.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workA handle may only contain a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores, and ᴀ is not a. Usernames are always lowercase anyway.
Posts, comments and DMsPartlyMost of these letters are decades old and display everywhere. The small f and s (ꜰ and ꜱ) are newer additions, so they're the likeliest to show as boxes on an old phone.
HashtagsDoesn't work#ꜱᴍᴀʟʟʙᴀᴛᴄʜ is not #smallbatch. Small caps have no official Unicode link to ordinary letters, so even search that tidies up text has no standard way to connect them.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook wants your everyday name, with no symbols, unusual capitalization or mixed alphabets. A small-caps name breaks those rules, so keep it plain.
Word documentsPartlyPasted small caps survive, but Word has real small caps in its Font settings, which keep words searchable and spell-checked. Use those for documents.

What small caps are in print

In typography, small caps are a separate set of capitals designed to sit at the x-height, the height of a lowercase x. A well-made typeface draws them with strokes as heavy as its lowercase letters, so they don't look like shrunken, spindly capitals. Book designers reach for them where full capitals would shout.

  • Many English Bibles print Lᴏʀᴅ, a capital L followed by small capitals, where the Hebrew text has the divine name YHWH.
  • Times and eras such as 7 ᴘᴍ and 1200 ʙᴄ look less bulky in small caps than in full capitals.
  • The first few words of a chapter are often set in small caps, leading out of a large opening letter.

The letters this generator makes imitate that look in places where you can't format text, like an Instagram bio. They're a stand-in, not the real thing: their height and weight depend on your phone's fonts, not on a typeface designed around them.

Where the generator finds each letter

Unicode never encoded small caps as a style for ordinary text. Small capital letters were added one at a time, for linguists who needed them as symbols for particular sounds, and the generator gathers them from several places:

LettersUnicode blockBackground
ʙ ɢ ʜ ɪ ʟ ɴ ʀ ʏIPA ExtensionsThe International Phonetic Alphabet: ɪ is the vowel in “bit,” ʀ a rolled r made at the back of the mouth, ʙ the lip trill of a shivery “brrr”
ᴀ ᴄ ᴅ ᴇ ᴊ ᴋ ᴍ ᴏ ᴘ ᴛ ᴜ ᴠ ᴡ ᴢPhonetic ExtensionsLargely the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet, used to transcribe Finnish, Hungarian and related languages
ꜰ ꜱLatin Extended-DAdded later than the rest, so some older fonts lack them
ǫ, standing in for qLatin Extended-BAn o with a small hook, the ogonek, used in languages such as Navajo
xBasic LatinOrdinary lowercase x: there is no small capital X

So a word in small caps is a patchwork of phonetic symbols that happen to look like a matching set. ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ alone draws on three of those blocks.

Why q and x are different

Two letters needed workarounds. Unicode did eventually add a true small capital Q, but it came much later than the others and is less likely to display, so the generator uses ǫ, an o with a hook underneath. In a word like ǫᴜɪᴢ it passes for a q at a glance.

X has no small capital at all, and it barely matters: a lowercase x already has the shape of a small capital X, so ʙᴏx looks right. In most fonts the same is nearly true of c, o, v, w and z, which is why ᴄ, ᴏ, ᴠ, ᴡ and ᴢ look almost identical to their lowercase twins.

Tip: Check a small-caps name on a second phone. If ꜰ or ꜱ show as boxes there, every f and s in your text disappears, and in English that's a lot of letters.

Small caps, tiny text and wide text compared

StyleExampleWhere the letters sitNumbers
Small capsꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ʙᴀᴛᴄʜ ꜱɪɴᴄᴇ 2019On the line, at lowercase heightLeft at full size
Tinyˢᵐᵃˡˡ ᵇᵃᵗᶜʰ ˢⁱⁿᶜᵉ ²⁰¹⁹Raised, like a footnote markShrunk and raised too
Widesmall batch since 2019On the line, each in a full squareWidened to match

Small caps keep a level baseline, so they read like a quiet heading. Tiny text floats above the line and suits a word or two, not a sentence. Wide text goes the other way, stretching each letter sideways, which gives a retro, vaporwave feel.

There's a difference under the surface as well. Most tiny letters and all the wide ones carry an official Unicode mapping back to ordinary letters, so software that normalizes text can read them as words. Small caps have no such mapping: to a search box, ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ is five unusual letters, not the word small.

Numbers and capitals in small-caps text

Digits don't change, because Unicode has no small-capital numbers. In “small batch since 2019” the year stands a head taller than the words beside it. Typographers solve this with old-style figures, numbers that sit lower and blend with small caps, but those exist only as alternate shapes inside real fonts, not as characters you can paste.

Capitals behave differently too. The generator turns both a and A into ᴀ, so the line between capital and small letters disappears. For the book look, with a full capital at the start of a word, type the first letter in plain text and convert the rest: Lᴏʀᴅ, Sᴛᴜᴅɪᴏ, Bᴀᴋᴇʀʏ.

Tip: Spelling a number out keeps the whole line in small caps, as in ꜱɪɴᴄᴇ ᴛᴡᴇɴᴛʏ ɴɪɴᴇᴛᴇᴇɴ. It's longer, but nothing sticks up.

Questions people ask

Are small caps the same as all caps?

No. All caps are full height, so a line of them feels loud. Small caps are capitals at the height of lowercase letters, which gives you the formal shape of capitals at the volume of ordinary text.

Why is the q in my small caps an o with a tail?

The generator uses ǫ, an o with an ogonek hook, because a true small capital Q joined Unicode much later than the rest and fonts have been slow to include it. In a word like ǫᴜᴇᴇɴ it reads as a q.

Can I use small caps in my Instagram username?

No. Usernames accept only a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores. Put the small-caps version in the name field above your bio, which accepts these letters, and keep the handle plain.

How do I get small caps in Word?

Select the text, open the Font dialog from the Home tab and tick Small caps, or press Ctrl+Shift+K on Windows (Cmd+Shift+K on a Mac). Word then shows true small caps while the text underneath stays ordinary letters that spell-check and search can read.

How do I make small caps on a website?

Use CSS instead of these characters. font-variant: small-caps turns lowercase letters into small capitals, and font-variant-caps: all-small-caps converts the capitals too. Search engines and screen readers still get plain text.
