Fonts for an Instagram business bio

A business bio has room for one styled line, such as a slogan or a label, but what you sell, where you are and how to order should stay in plain letters. Type below, copy a style and paste it into Edit profile. These styles are look-alike Unicode characters, not fonts, and Instagram has said its search matches the words in bios.

Where they work

Instagram business bio fonts: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Bio textWorksStyled lines paste into a business or creator bio like any other text. One or two of them leave the plain details easy to spot.
Name fieldWorksIt accepts styled letters, but customers search for a business by its name and by what it does, so keep those words plain and style only an extra word.
Category labelDoesn't workThe label under your name, such as Bakery or Florist, is picked from Instagram’s list. You can show or hide it, but not restyle it.
Contact options and action buttonsDoesn't workEmail, phone, directions and booking or ordering buttons come from your profile settings and always appear in Instagram’s own type.
Web addresses in the bioDoesn't workAn address typed into the bio text isn’t tappable, plain or styled. Add it in the Links section, which Instagram shows as a link under the bio.
@mentions and hashtagsDoesn't workA plain @handle or #tag in a bio links to that account or tag. Styled versions don’t, so keep a sister brand or branded hashtag plain.
Words you ask people to DMDoesn't workIf the bio says “DM us PRICE”, write PRICE in plain capitals. A copied 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗘 is a different set of characters, which a keyword auto-reply may not match.

What Instagram already writes for you

A business profile’s header has more parts than a personal one, and most of them aren’t yours to style. Knowing which is which shows how little the bio has to carry.

Part of the headerWho writes itCan it be styled?
NameYou, in Edit profileYes, but keep searchable words plain
Category labelInstagram, from a listNo; you can only show or hide it
BioYouYes, a line or two
Contact options and action buttonsInstagram, from your settingsNo
LinksYou add themNo; web addresses must be typed normally
Highlight namesYouYes

So the category already says what kind of business you are, and the buttons already say how to reach you. The bio doesn’t need to repeat an email address or phone number. It can spend its space on what makes you different, in words people can read and search.

Words Instagram search needs to read

According to Instagram, search compares what people type with account usernames and bios, as well as captions, hashtags and places. A customer looking for a cake maker types “cakes leeds” in ordinary letters. If your bio says 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀, those words are maths symbols that only look like cakes and Leeds, and the match may not happen.

Part of the bioStyle it?Why
What you sell or doNoIt’s the word customers search for
Town, area or delivery zoneNoLocal customers add it to their search
Slogan or welcome lineYesNobody searches for it, and it sets the tone
Labels such as hours or deliveryYesThe label is decoration; the detail after it stays plain
Prices, codes and emailsNoCustomers copy them or type them out

Laid out that way, a home bakery’s bio might read:

  • Line 1, plain: Custom cakes in Leeds 🎂
  • Line 2, small caps: ᴏʀᴅᴇʀꜱ ᴏᴘᴇɴ ᴇᴠᴇʀʏ ᴍᴏɴᴅᴀʏ
  • Line 3, plain: Collection or local delivery, Tuesday to Saturday
  • Line 4, arrows: ➳ Order form below ➳

Arrows and sparkles: decoration that leaves the words alone

Two of the styles featured here don’t change your letters at all. Arrows puts ➳ at each end of a line, and Sparkles wraps it in stars and dots. The words inside stay ordinary text that search can match, which makes these frames a good fit for lines that carry information, like a call to action.

The catch is what a screen reader makes of the frame. Every symbol has an official name: ➳ is “white-feathered rightwards arrow”, and the sparkle frame mixes ✧, “white four pointed star”, with halfwidth katakana marks borrowed from Japanese. Some screen readers read those names aloud before your words, and others skip them. One arrow is plenty; a sparkle frame on every line is a lot to sit through.

Tip: Point arrows at something real. Instagram shows your links just under the bio, so a last line such as ➳ Book a tasting below leads the eye straight to them.

A house style for the whole profile

Customers meet your business in several places on Instagram: the bio, highlight names, captions and replies. Picking two styles and giving each a fixed job makes those places look like one business. Write the rules down, so whoever posts next uses them too.

Everything else, from prices and addresses to replies to customers, stays plain. Two styles with clear jobs look planned; five styles used at random look like five different shops.

Questions people ask

Do fancy fonts look unprofessional in a business bio?

Not in small doses. One styled line can make a bio look considered, like a well-made sign. The trouble starts when the useful details are styled too, because they become harder to read, to search for and to copy.

Will styled letters hurt my business in Instagram search?

They can, if they replace the words people search for. Instagram matches searches against bios, among other things, and a styled word is made of different characters from the plain one. Keep your service and location plain and that risk largely goes away.

Can I change the font of my category label or contact buttons?

No. Instagram writes those itself, in its own type. You choose the category from a list and the buttons from your contact options, and you can hide the category label if you’d rather your bio did that job.

Should my business name be styled in the name field?

Keep the name customers will search for in plain letters. Instagram’s own advice is to use the name people know you by in your username or name, and a styled version may not match what they type. For a styled touch, add a word after the plain name, such as ʙᴀᴋᴇʀʏ in small caps.

Can I use the same styled bio on my Facebook Page?

Mostly. A Page’s intro text accepts the same characters, so a styled line will paste in. The Page name is another matter: it follows Facebook’s Page name guidelines and has to stay plain.
