Fonts for your Instagram bio

Instagram bio fonts are styled letters you paste into your bio: bold for a headline, small caps for a tagline, tiny text for a quiet detail. Instagram has no font setting, so type below, copy a style and paste it in under Edit profile. These are look-alike Unicode characters rather than fonts, and the bio's 150-character limit still applies.

Where they work

Instagram bio fonts: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
BioWorksEvery style here pastes into the bio. You can press Return between lines, so each style can have a line of its own.
Name fieldWorksThe name above your bio takes styled letters too. Instagram search leans on names and usernames, so keep the words people would type readable.
UsernameDoesn't workUsernames stick to a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores, so the styling has to stop at the name and the bio.
@mentions and #hashtags in a bioDoesn't workTyped plainly, an @account or #tag in a bio becomes a tappable link. In styled letters it's only decoration, and the link is lost.
Links sectionDoesn't workWeb addresses go in the separate links section and have to be typed normally. A styled address isn't a working link.

A bio built line by line

Here is a bio for a film photographer, with one job for each line. Notice how much of it is plain.

LineStyleIts job
𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗰𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁BoldThe first thing people read, so it gets the weight
ᴘᴏʀᴛʀᴀɪᴛꜱ · ᴡᴇᴅᴅɪɴɢꜱ · ꜱᴛʀᴇᴇᴛSmall capsA tagline that looks different from the headline but stays easy to read
Booking weddings for 2027PlainThe offer, in words anyone can take in at a glance
ˢʰᵒᵒᵗⁱⁿᵍ ᶠⁱˡᵐ ˢⁱⁿᶜᵉ ²⁰¹⁶TinyA detail nobody needs to read first
꒰ঌ rates and dates below ໒꒱Cute framePoints at the one thing you want people to do next

That's three styles plus plain text, which is plenty for 150 characters. Every extra style makes the bio slower to scan, and decorations take room from the words that do the work.

Match the style to the line

StyleGood forWatch out for
BoldA headline or the first few wordsA fully bold bio reads like shouting
CursiveA name, a sign-off, one or two wordsThin strokes almost vanish at bio size
Small capsA tagline or a list of what you doLong runs lose the shape of words, so keep it to one line
TinyA footnote, such as a year or a cityHard going for anyone without sharp eyesight
SparklesFraming one short lineBusy next to other styles, so one frame per bio is enough
Cute frameA call to actionLoses its charm if every line has one

Pair one loud style with one quiet one: bold with small caps, or cursive with tiny text. Two loud styles in the same bio, such as bold and sparkles, fight for the same glance.

What to keep plain

  • What you do, in words people search for. Instagram search leans on names and usernames, and nobody types 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿 into a search box.
  • @mentions and #hashtags, which only become links when they're typed normally.
  • Contact details. On a professional account, add an email, phone number or address as contact buttons, which people can tap.
  • Prices and codes. Bold digits like 𝟮𝟬% look fine, but pasted into a checkout they aren't numbers.

A quick test: read the bio as a stranger would. The plain words alone should still say who you are and what to do next, and the styled ones should only add personality.

Tiny text up close

Tiny text is built from superscript letters, most of them made for phonetic notes, like the ʰ that marks a puff of air after a sound, plus ordinary superscript digits such as ² and ⁰. The set has gaps, so the generator fills them with stand-ins.

  • q: a superscript small q only joined Unicode in version 14.0, in 2021, so the generator uses ᑫ, an older Canadian syllabics character that more devices are likely to have. “quick” becomes ᑫᵘⁱᶜᵏ.
  • Capitals: Unicode has no superscript capital S, X, Y or Z, and capital C, F and Q arrived only in 2021, so the generator writes those as small letters (or ᑫ for Q). 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 turns into ˢⁱⁿᶜᵉ, exactly like since.
  • Punctuation: full stops, commas and slashes don't shrink, so they sit at full size beside the tiny letters.

Tip: Use tiny text for a few lower-case words or a year. If you need tiny capitals, pick words without C, F, Q, S, X, Y or Z, or switch to small caps.

Questions people ask

How do I put a different font in my Instagram bio?

Type your bio in the box above and copy the style you want. In Instagram, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Bio, and paste. You can paste a different style on each line. Save, then look at your profile to check how it reads.

Why does my bio show boxes on a friend's phone?

Their phone has no font for some of the characters. Tiny letters, small caps and decorative frames borrow from rarer corners of Unicode and are the usual culprits. Bold and cursive are widely supported, so swap the line that breaks for one of those.

How many fonts should I use in one bio?

Two or three at most, alongside plain text. A bio gets glanced at rather than studied, and every change of style slows the eye down. One bold line and one lighter style usually say enough.

Will a fancy bio help people find my account?

No. Styled words don't match what people type into search, so styling can make you harder to find but never easier. Keep your name and the words that describe you readable, and treat the fonts as decoration.

How do I add line breaks to my Instagram bio?

While editing your bio in the app, press Return or Enter where you want a new line, and give each line its own style if you like. If a break doesn't stick, write the whole bio in another app first and paste it in one go.
