Cursive fonts for Instagram

To write in cursive on Instagram, type in the box, copy the script version and paste it into your name, bio, a caption or a comment. Instagram has no cursive option of its own in those places. What you paste isn't a font but a run of Unicode characters, mostly maths script letters such as ๐“ and ๐“‹, so the shape survives the paste and there's nothing to install.

Where they work

Cursive fonts for Instagram: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Name in Edit profileWorksScript letters save in the Name field and show at the top of your profile. Add one plain word, such as your trade or town, because search compares what people type with ordinary letters.
BioWorksBest on a single line, like a tagline or a sign-off. Opening hours, prices and booking details are quicker to read in plain letters below it.
UsernameDoesn't workThe @handle accepts only aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, full stops and underscores, and no script letter is among them. The cursive version belongs in your name.
Captions and commentsWorksScript shows in captions, comments and replies, in the app and on instagram.com. Digits stay upright, because Unicode has no script numbers.
DMsWorksA cursive word sends like any other text in a chat. If the person you're writing to uses a screen reader, keep the message plain.
HashtagsDoesn't work#๐“ˆ๐“Š๐“ƒ๐“ˆโ„ฏ๐“‰ is spelled with different characters from #sunset, so it usually won't count towards that tag. Type tags plainly and style the words around them.

Four looks that get called cursive

Search for cursive Instagram fonts and you'll find four different tricks offered under the same name. Two use Unicode's script letters, one is slanted print, and one is stitched together from Greek and Cyrillic letters that happen to look curly. Here is the word โ€œloveโ€ in each.

Lookโ€œloveโ€Made fromWhat a screen reader may do
Cursive๐“โ„ด๐“‹โ„ฏMaths script letters, with โ„ด and โ„ฏ borrowed from an older blockRead out names like โ€œmathematical script small lโ€, or skip them
Bold cursive๐“ต๐“ธ๐“ฟ๐“ฎMaths bold script letters, all from one complete setMuch the same: long names letter by letter, or silence
Italic๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆMaths sans-serif italic: slanted print, not script at allLong names again, since these are maths symbols too
Greek and Cyrillic mixโ„“ฯƒฮฝั”A script l, Greek sigma and nu, and the Cyrillic letter ั”Name them as Greek and Cyrillic letters, or try to say a foreign word

The fourth kind is the one to be careful with. To readers of Greek, or of languages written in Cyrillic, it's a jumble of real letters, and search treats it as a foreign word rather than โ€œloveโ€. The generator on this page doesn't make it. The first three are all here, with bold cursive first because it holds up best at the small sizes Instagram uses for names and bios.

A profile with cursive in the right places

Script works best with one job per spot. Here is a made-up wedding stationery studio set up that way, from the name at the top to a reply in the comments.

SpotTextWhy it's done this way
Name๐“œ๐“ช๐“ป๐“ฒ๐“ฐ๐“ธ๐“ต๐“ญ StationeryBold cursive for the brand word, while the plain word โ€œStationeryโ€ gives search something to match
Bio, line 1ษชษดแด‹, แด˜แด€แด˜แด‡ส€ & แด˜แด€แด›ษชแด‡ษดแด„แด‡A tagline in small caps, which stays crisp at bio size and doesn't compete with the script above it
Bio, line 2Hand-lettered invitations, menus and place cardsPlain, because this is the line that tells a visitor what's for sale
Bio, line 3Booking 2027 weddings ยท BathPlain again: script has no digits, and the town is a word people search for
Caption opener๐’œ ๐“ˆ๐“…๐“‡๐’พ๐“ƒโ„Š ๐“Œโ„ฏ๐’น๐’น๐’พ๐“ƒโ„ŠLight cursive as a title, short enough to show in full before the caption is cut off
Comment reply๐“‰๐’ฝ๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐“€ ๐“Žโ„ด๐“Š โ™ก The paper is 300gsm cotton.A script thank-you, then the answer in plain words anyone can read or copy

Why bold cursive for the name? In the lighter script set, โ€œMarigoldโ€ comes out as โ„ณ๐’ถ๐“‡๐’พโ„Šโ„ด๐“๐’น, and three of its eight letters, โ„ณ, โ„Š and โ„ด, are older characters plugging gaps in that set. On some phones they look slightly out of step with the rest. The bold set has no gaps, so ๐“œ๐“ช๐“ป๐“ฒ๐“ฐ๐“ธ๐“ต๐“ญ stays even from end to end.

Names with accents, and letters script doesn't cover

Unicode's script letters exist only for the basic A to Z, in capitals and small letters. Anything else passes through unchanged, so Zoรซ becomes ๐’ตโ„ดรซ and Renรฉe becomes โ„›โ„ฏ๐“ƒรฉโ„ฏ, each with a plain, upright letter in the middle of the script. The same happens to รฑ, รง, รธ and รŸ, and names written in Devanagari, Bengali or Cyrillic have no script look-alikes at all.

  • Keep the plain accented letter. It looks a little different from its neighbours, but the name is spelled right.
  • Write the name in plain letters and put the cursive on another word, such as a tagline.
  • Add the accent as a separate combining mark after the script letter, as in โ„ฏฬ for รฉ. Some phones place it neatly and some don't, so check it on a second device before you save.

Tip: If an accent is part of your name, keep it. A name spelled correctly in plain letters beats a prettier one spelled wrong.

When Instagram cursive goes wrong

What you seeWhy it happensWhat to do
Empty boxes in place of B, E, F, H, I, L, M, R, e, g or oThe tool you used put those letters in reserved, empty slots of the script set instead of borrowing the older charactersMake the text again here, where those gaps are filled
Boxes all through the text on one friend's phoneThat device has no font for maths letters, which is rare on current phonesKeep the key words plain so the profile still makes sense to them
One letter looks larger or paler than the othersIt's one of the borrowed older characters, drawn from a different font than its neighboursSwitch to bold cursive, which borrows nothing
Instagram won't accept a new nameName changes are limited to two within 14 daysWait until the 14 days are up, and try styles in your notes app first
The username box rejects your cursiveHandles allow only aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, full stops and underscoresPut the cursive in the Name field instead
A search for your business doesn't bring you upEvery word of the name is in scriptAdd one plain word to the name, ideally what you do

Most of these trace back to one fact: script letters are symbols that look like letters. Instagram displays them faithfully, but anything that has to read your words, from search to a screen reader, may not treat them as words at all.

Questions people ask

Can I make my Instagram bio cursive without downloading an app?

Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser, type the line you want, copy the cursive version and paste it into Edit profile > Bio. Nothing gets installed, because the cursive is made of characters your phone can already display. Save the result in your notes app if you'll want it again.

Why does some Instagram cursive look like Greek letters?

Because it partly is Greek. That style strings together look-alikes such as โ„“, a script l sometimes used as the symbol for litres, Greek ฯƒ (sigma) and ฮฝ (nu), and Cyrillic ั”, to spell โ„“ฯƒฮฝั”. At a glance it passes for handwriting, but search sees foreign letters, and screen readers may read them as exactly that.

Can I use cursive for text on Stories and Reels?

Stories and Reels come with their own lettering: the text tool in each editor lets you switch between built-in typefaces, so pasted characters aren't needed there. Pasted cursive is for the places where Instagram offers no choice at all: your name, bio, captions, comments and chats.

Should my whole Instagram bio be in cursive?

It's better not to. Visitors skim a bio for what you do, where you are and how to get in touch, and a block of script slows all three down. One cursive line with plain details beneath gives you the look without that cost, and keeps the useful words readable by anyone, and by any search box.
