Instagram fonts for your profile and posts
Instagram fonts are styled letters, like ๐ฏ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ, ๐ธ๐๐๐๐พ๐โฏ or ๐๐ฉ๐ก ๐๐ซ๐ค๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฅ, that you paste into your name, bio, captions, comments and DMs. Instagram has no font setting for any of those, so type below, copy a style and paste it in. The letters are Unicode characters rather than a font, which is how they keep their look in the app.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Username (@handle) | Doesn't work | The handle is limited to the letters a to z, numbers, full stops and underscores. Styled letters aren't any of those, so Instagram won't save them. |
| Name | Works | The name field takes styled letters and is the best place for them. Changes are limited, so preview a style before you save it. |
| Bio | Works | Styled letters paste in and keep their look. One styled line, such as a tagline, reads better than a bio styled from top to bottom. |
| Captions | Works | Styled text shows in the feed and on the post. Bold suits a first line or the headings inside a long caption. |
| Comments and DMs | Partly | Common styles display for nearly everyone. Rarer ones, like boxed capitals or letters borrowed from other alphabets, can appear as empty boxes on older phones. |
| Hashtags | Doesn't work | #๐ณ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ is not #food. A hashtag only joins the tag people follow when it's typed in plain letters. |
| @mentions | Doesn't work | An @name in styled letters doesn't match any account, so nobody gets tagged or notified. |
| Stories and Reels text | Works | The editor has its own built-in fonts for text on a Story or Reel, and pasted styled letters show there too. |
Instagram's own fonts versus pasted ones
Instagram does have fonts, but only in the Story and Reel editors. Open the text tool there and you can switch between built-in typefaces for words that sit on top of your photo or video. Those choices stay inside that Story or Reel. Your name, bio, captions, comments and DMs always appear in the app's standard lettering, with no font menu anywhere.
Pasted styles get around that. Each styled letter is a character in its own right, so Instagram stores it like any other text and shows it to everyone who opens your profile or post. That is also the source of their limits: to Instagram's search, hashtags and tagging, a styled word is a different string of characters from the plain one.
Eight styles and where each fits on Instagram
| Style | Example | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Italic | ๐๐ฆ๐ธ ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฑ, ๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฌ ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ฃ๐ช๐ฐ | A quote, a title or an aside |
| Cursive | ๐ฉโฏ๐ ๐น๐โด๐ , ๐๐พ๐๐ ๐พ๐ ๐ท๐พโด | A name or a sign-off |
| Bold cursive | ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ญ๐ป๐ธ๐น, ๐ต๐ฒ๐ท๐ด ๐ฒ๐ท ๐ซ๐ฒ๐ธ | A name that must read at small sizes |
| Old English | ๐๐ข๐ด ๐ก๐ฏ๐ฌ๐ญ, ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ซ๐จ ๐ฆ๐ซ ๐๐ฆ๐ฌ | A brand name with an edge |
| Bubble | โโโฆ โโกโโ, โโโโ โโ โโโ | One playful word |
| Small caps | ษดแดแดก แด สแดแด, สษชษดแด ษชษด สษชแด | A tagline under your name |
| Strikethrough | Nฬถeฬถwฬถ dฬถrฬถoฬถpฬถ,ฬถ lฬถiฬถnฬถkฬถ iฬถnฬถ bฬถiฬถoฬถ | Jokes and crossed-out prices |
Bold and italic are the workhorses because they sit closest to Instagram's own lettering. The rest are for moments: a name, a heading, a joke. Pick one or two for your profile and use them consistently, and your posts start to look like they belong together.
What Instagram search can't see in a styled word
Instagram search looks for what people type in the text of profiles and posts, such as names and captions. People type plain letters, so a styled word is a different word as far as search is concerned. ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ต๐ญ ๐ข๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ถ in a name, or ๐ด๐น๐๐๐ฒ๐ป-๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ in a caption, may never come up for someone searching those words.
- Style the decorative words and keep the descriptive ones plain. The word for what you sell or do is usually the one people search for.
- In a caption, write the words that describe the post in plain letters, and save styling for a headline or a label.
- Your username is always plain, so keep it close to the name people are likely to type.
Captions, hashtags and crossed-out text
In a caption, styled text works best as structure. Only the start of a caption shows in the feed before the โmoreโ link, so a bold first line acts as a headline, and bold labels further down break a long caption into parts. Hashtags and @mentions go in plain letters, or they won't link.
Strikethrough is popular for jokes and price changes: โI hฬถaฬถtฬถeฬถ love Mondaysโ or an old price crossed out next to a new one. It works by adding a stroke mark after every character, so each letter carries its own short line. Spaces get no mark, so the line breaks between words, and on some phones the strokes don't quite join up.
Tip: A screen reader may read crossed-out text as if the line weren't there. When you strike through an old price, also write โwasโ and โnowโ in plain words so everyone gets the right number.
A two-style profile, line by line
Here is how a small florist could set up a profile with two styles, each doing one job:
- Name field, in bold cursive with a plain keyword: ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ต๐ญ ๐ข๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ถ Florist
- Bio line one, in small caps: ๊ฑแดแด๊ฑแดษดแดส สแดแดวซแดแดแด๊ฑ
- Bio line two, plain: Same-day delivery, Monday to Saturday
- Bio line three, plain: Order by 2pm using the link below
The styled parts give the profile a look, and everything a customer needs is in plain text that anyone can read, search or have read aloud. Adding a third style, or styling the details, is usually where a bio tips from pretty into hard to read.
Questions people ask
Why can't I use fonts in my Instagram username?
Usernames only accept the letters a to z, numbers, full stops and underscores, and styled letters are different characters entirely. Your username is also part of your profile's web address. Put the styled version in your name field instead; it sits right above your bio.
Do styled fonts show up on Instagram's website?
Yes. Styled letters are stored as text, so they appear in a web browser just as they do in the app, as long as the computer has a font that includes them. Current Windows and Mac computers cover the common styles; rarer ones can still show as boxes on older machines.
Can I change the font in Instagram Stories?
Yes, with the built-in text tool: add text to your Story and pick from the fonts it offers. Those fonts only apply to that Story. For a style that matches your bio, paste styled letters from this page into the text tool instead; they display there too.
Is using fancy fonts against Instagram's rules?
No. Instagram's rules don't single out styled letters, and plenty of profiles use them. The usual rules still apply, such as not using a name that pretends to be someone else. The practical costs are search and accessibility, not rule-breaking.
