Fonts for Instagram DMs

Chat is quick and casual, so the styles that work are the ones that change the tone of a word without slowing anyone down. These are the four shown first above:

Numbers follow each style's own rules. Bold has digits of its own, so the sample becomes 𝗥𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲. Italic and small caps have none, so the 10 stays plain and upright: 𝘙𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 10 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦.

A styled DM isn't formatting that Instagram applies. Every styled letter is a character of its own, 𝗥 rather than R, so the message is stored and delivered exactly as you built it. What varies is the drawing: an iPhone, an Android phone and a laptop each use their own fonts for these characters, so your bold can look a touch heavier, narrower or rounder at the other end.

Notifications are the part people forget. If the other person has message previews switched on, a banner or the lock screen shows your words before they open the app, drawn with the phone's system fonts. A message that opens with plain words still makes sense there, even if the styled part comes out as boxes.

Tip: Lead with plain words and style the end. “Running 10 minutes late, 𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆” previews clearly on any phone, while a message that starts “𝗥𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲” depends on the reader's fonts.

In mid-2025 it was reported that Instagram had begun adding its own bold, italic and strikethrough options to DMs. We couldn't confirm how they work or which accounts have them, so look in your own app. Where they exist, they suit simple emphasis well: built-in formatting normally changes how ordinary letters are shown instead of swapping them for maths symbols, which is easier on screen readers.

Pasted styles still cover the rest. Nothing reported suggests small caps, cursive or outline letters, so pasting is still how you get those. And because pasted styles travel as characters, they don't depend on a formatting feature existing in the other person's app.

Chats with shops and creators are where styled text causes the most trouble, because the reply often comes from software. Plenty of accounts answer DMs automatically: you send a word, or comment one under a post, and a message comes back with a link, a price list or a booking page.

• Keywords: send them exactly as the post or Story asks, in plain letters. An automation waiting for LINK may not recognise 𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗞, which is spelled with different characters.
• Order numbers and email addresses: the business may paste them into another system, where styled characters match nothing.
• Sizes, dates and price questions: plain text is quickest to read for someone answering dozens of chats.
• Thanks and sign-offs: the safe spot for style, such as a closing 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶.

The same applies when you're the business. A bold first line such as 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 helps a long reply scan, as long as the price, the pickup time and any link under it are plain. That holds for automatic replies too: styled words display, but a styled link or code won't work.

Writing to someone who doesn't follow you puts your message in their requests, where they judge it from a preview. Styled letters work against you there. Bold and script characters are common in scam and spam messages, such as fake giveaway wins and “brand ambassador” offers, partly because unusual characters can slip past simple word filters. A plain first message that says who you are and why you're writing reads as a person, not a campaign.

The pattern is worth knowing as a reader too. A message from an account you don't know that mixes styled letters, urgency and a link to claim a prize is a classic warning sign. Check the sender's profile before you tap anything.

If someone tells you your message arrived as boxes, or a style looks wrong on their screen, you can change it. Instagram lets you edit a sent DM for up to 15 minutes; after that, unsending it and sending a new one is the only fix.

1. Press and hold the message in the chat.
2. Within 15 minutes of sending, choose Edit and replace the styled part with plain letters.
3. Later than that, choose Unsend, then send a corrected version.

In a one-to-one chat you know your reader, which makes one more choice easy. If a friend uses VoiceOver on an iPhone or TalkBack on Android, skip the styles: some screen readers announce each character's long Unicode name, so a five-word styled message can take far longer to hear than to read.
