Copy and paste fonts

Copy-and-paste fonts are styled letters you can paste into almost any text box: type below, copy the style you like, and paste it into a bio, caption, comment or chat. They aren't real fonts. Each letter is swapped for a look-alike Unicode character, such as ๐—ฏ for b, and because that character is part of the text, the style stays when you paste it.

Where they work

Copy and paste fonts: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram bio and nameWorksBoth fields take styled characters. Your name also appears in search results under your username, so keep your real or business name readable somewhere on the profile.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workOnly aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, full stops and underscores are allowed, so no styled letter will pass. Fancy text belongs in the name field.
Posts, comments, DMs and MessengerPartlyCommon styles such as bold, italic, cursive, Old English and bubble display on current phones and computers. Rarer ones, like boxed capitals or letters borrowed from other scripts, may show as empty boxes on older devices.
Hashtags and @mentionsDoesn't workA styled hashtag usually isn't treated as the plain tag, and a styled @mention can't match a username, so neither links where you expect. Type both in plain letters.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook's name rules exclude symbols, unusual capitalization and characters from several languages mixed together, which rules out styled letters for your profile name.
Word, Google Docs and emailPartlyThey paste and keep their look, but they are characters rather than formatting, so changing the font or pressing Bold won't turn them back into plain letters.
Logins, emails and passwordsDoesn't workSign-in details have to be typed the same way every time, and a normal keyboard can't type ๐—ฏ. Many sign-up forms reject these characters as well.

Why a pasted font keeps its look

A normal font changes how letters are drawn, not which letters they are. Paste text set in a fancy font into Instagram and the app receives plain A, B and C, which it draws in its own typeface, so the style is lost. Copy-and-paste fonts work the other way round. ๐—› is not a bold H; it is a separate character, U+1D5DB, officially named โ€œmathematical sans-serif bold capital H,โ€ and the app has to show it as it is.

That's also why pasting as plain text doesn't remove them. Plain-text pasting strips formatting, and these characters aren't formatting. The catch is that the receiving app can't treat them as normal words either: to a search box, a hashtag or a screen reader, ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ is five unusual characters, not the word hello.

What each style is really made of

Bubbleโ“•โ“žโ“โ“ฃโ“ขCircled letters from the Enclosed Alphanumerics block, which Unicode classes as symbols rather than letters
Small caps๊œฐแดษดแด›๊œฑMostly phonetic letters used by linguists; q becomes วซ, an o with a small hook, and x stays a normal x
Wide๏ฝ†๏ฝ๏ฝŽ๏ฝ”๏ฝ“Full-width forms from Chinese, Japanese and Korean text, where each Latin letter takes up a full square
Strikethrough and underlinefฬถoฬถnฬถtฬถsฬถOrdinary letters, each followed by a combining mark that draws the line through or under it
Upside downsส‡uoษŸMostly phonetic letters, several officially named โ€œturnedโ€ (ส‡ is โ€œLatin small letter turned tโ€), written in reverse order
Faux Cyrillicfัณะฟั‚$Mostly real Cyrillic letters picked for their shape, so the word is nonsense to anyone who reads Cyrillic

Unicode added the maths letters so that a bold or script letter could carry its own meaning in a formula, and it recommends that they not be used as a substitute for styling ordinary text. Nothing stops you, but most of the drawbacks on this page come from using them for a job they weren't built for.

Copying and pasting on a phone or computer

  1. Type your text in the box at the top of the page and find the style you want.
  2. Copy that version. On a phone, press and hold to select it and tap Copy; on a computer, press Ctrl+C, or Cmd+C on a Mac.
  3. Open the app, press and hold inside the text field and tap Paste, or press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
  4. Look at the result before you save. Boxes or question marks mean your device can't show that style, so pick another.

Tip: Building a bio from several styles? Draft it in your phone's notes app first. You can mix styles line by line, see the whole thing at once, then copy and paste it into Instagram in one go.

On Android, Gboard's clipboard can hold several recent copies, which saves switching back and forth when you're pasting more than one style.

A quick check before you post

  • Is your name, or what you do, still in plain letters somewhere? That's what people type into search.
  • Are hashtags, @mentions, links and prices plain? Styled versions don't link, and numbers in some styles are hard to read.
  • Is the styled part short? A word or a line reads as decoration. A whole caption in script or bold is tiring to read, and screen readers may spell it out character by character or skip it.
  • Does it hold up on another phone? Each device uses its own fonts, so a style that looks crisp on yours can look thin, or turn into boxes, on someone else's.
  • Are you mixing too many styles? One or two per bio is usually enough; more makes it hard to scan.

Questions people ask

Can I download these fonts and install them?

No, because there is nothing to install. The styles are characters that already exist in Unicode, and your phone draws them with fonts it already has. If you want a real font for a document or a design, download one as a font file, from a library such as Google Fonts, and install it on your computer.

Why does the same text look different on someone else's phone?

The characters are identical everywhere, but every device draws them with its own fonts, so an iPhone, an Android phone and a Windows laptop can give the same ๐’ธ๐“Š๐“‡๐“ˆ๐’พ๐“‹โ„ฏ slightly different shapes and weights. When a device has no font for a character at all, it shows an empty box, which type designers nickname โ€œtofu.โ€

How do I turn fancy text back into normal text?

Retyping is the only method that works for every style. If you can run a little code, Unicode's NFKC normalization turns maths-style letters (bold, italic, cursive, Old English, outline, typewriter) and bubble, square, wide and most tiny letters back into plain ones; bracketed letters come back with brackets, as (a). Black bubbles, black squares, small caps, upside-down text, strikethrough and look-alike letters stay as they are.

Do copy and paste fonts work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Copying and pasting them works like any other text, and current versions of both systems have fonts for the common styles. The rarer ones, such as boxed capitals or letters borrowed from Cherokee and Yi, are the most likely to show as boxes on older phones.
