Bubble font generator
A bubble font either puts letters inside circles, like ⓑⓤⓑⓑⓛⓔ, or makes them round and puffy. Type below for the circled kind, which pastes into an Instagram bio, a caption or a comment because each letter is a Unicode character, not a font file. For fat cartoon letters on a poster, a Cricut cut or a Canva design, you need an installable font instead, and there are free ones further down.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram name and bio | Works | Circled letters paste into both. One bubbled word, like ⓢⓐⓛⓔ, catches the eye; a whole line of circles is slow to read on a phone. |
| Instagram username | Doesn't work | Usernames are limited to a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores. Circled letters are classed as symbols, so they're refused. |
| Captions, comments and Messenger | Partly | Plain circled letters have been in Unicode since its early days and show almost everywhere, on Instagram and Facebook alike. Black bubbles are much newer, so older phones may show boxes instead. |
| Hashtags and @mentions | Doesn't work | Because circled letters are symbols to Unicode, #ⓣⓡⓐⓥⓔⓛ won't link as the #travel tag, and a circled @name won't reach the account. Type both normally. |
| Facebook profile name | Doesn't work | A profile name has to be the name you go by, written without symbols. Circled characters are symbols, so Facebook turns them down; save them for posts. |
| Cricut, Canva and printing | Partly | Pasted circles print as small letters inside thin rings, drawn by whatever font has them. For thick, puffy lettering on paper, vinyl or a design, install a bubble font. |
Circled text, puffy fonts and 3D bubbles
“Bubble font” covers three different things, and each one is made in its own way.
| What you want | What it is | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Letters in circles, like ⓑⓤⓑⓑⓛⓔ | Unicode characters you copy and paste | Any text box: bios, captions, comments and chats |
| Fat, rounded cartoon letters | An installable display font | Apps with a font menu: Word, Google Docs, Canva, Cricut Design Space |
| Shiny, inflated 3D lettering | A puffy font plus effects in a design app, or drawn by hand | Images and video, not text fields |
Instagram and Facebook text fields can't load fonts, so only the first kind can go straight into a bio or a comment. The other two have to become a picture first, such as a Story, a Reel cover or a post graphic. If you'd like a softer, rounder feel without the rings, Outline (𝕓𝕦𝕓𝕓𝕝𝕖) and Wide (bubble) are the nearest styles you can paste.
Bubble text beyond English
Unicode only circles a short list of characters: the 26 basic letters in both cases, the digits, and a selection of Japanese, Chinese and Korean characters, such as ㋐ and ㉠. Accented letters have no circled versions, so the generator leaves them alone: “café” comes out as ⓒⓐⓕé and “naïve” as ⓝⓐïⓥⓔ, with the odd letter sitting uncircled in the middle.
Most of the world's scripts get no circles at all. There are no circled Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil, Arabic, Greek or Cyrillic letters, so Hindi, Bengali or Russian words can't become bubble characters. Unicode does have a combining enclosing circle, U+20DD, which can follow any character, but it rarely looks right: depending on the font, the ring sits off-centre, comes out too small or overlaps the next letter.
Tip: For bubble lettering in Hindi, Marathi or another language written in Devanagari, set the words in Modak, a free puffy font that covers the script, and post them as an image.
Free puffy fonts for print, Cricut and design
When bubble letters need to be big, thick and printable, use a real font. These free display fonts on Google Fonts all have the rounded, inflated look people mean by bubble font:
- Chewy: bouncy, slightly uneven letters with a cartoon feel. Good for party invitations and playful signs.
- Bubblegum Sans: soft, rounded letters that stay easy to read across a longer phrase.
- Fredoka: a rounded sans serif with several weights, so the boldest works for headings and the lighter ones for smaller text.
- Titan One: heavy, chunky letters that suit short words on posters and stickers.
- Modak: about as fat as a font gets, with letters that nearly run into each other, in both Latin and Devanagari.
On a computer, download the font and install it, and it appears in Word and most other apps. Cricut Design Space lists installed fonts among its system fonts, though you may need to restart it first. Google Docs can add many Google Fonts through More fonts in the font menu, with nothing to install.
Making a 3D bubble word for Instagram
The glossy, inflated lettering on Reel covers and Story graphics is a puffy font plus a couple of effects, and most design apps, free ones included, can produce it:
- Type one or two words in a heavy rounded font, such as Titan One or Modak, and make them large.
- Add a thick outline in a darker shade of the letter colour, so each word reads as one solid shape.
- Add a soft drop shadow below and to one side to lift the letters off the background.
- If the app offers a gradient fill, run it from light at the top to darker at the bottom, which makes flat letters look rounded.
- Export the result as an image and use it in a post, a Story or a Reel cover.
Tip: Words inside an image can't be searched, and screen readers can't be relied on to read them unless you add alt text, so repeat the words in your caption as well.
Questions people ask
Can I put bubble letters in an Instagram Story?
Yes. Paste circled letters into the Story text tool like any other text. For big, glossy bubble lettering, build the words as an image with the steps above and add that to your Story instead.
Which bubble style is easiest to read?
Plain circled letters in lowercase, because they keep the familiar shapes of small letters. Black bubbles turn everything into capitals, which is slower going in a long word. If you only want a hint of the bubble look, Outline is the gentlest option.
Do bubble letters work in WhatsApp and text messages?
Yes. They're ordinary Unicode characters, so they paste into WhatsApp, SMS and email like any other text. How they look depends on the fonts on the reader's phone, which makes black bubbles the riskiest choice.
How do I get a bubble font in Word?
Install a free bubble font such as Fredoka or Chewy and choose it from Word's font list. You can paste circled characters into a document too, and they keep their look, but they print as small letters in rings rather than puffy shapes.
