Small text generator

This small text generator turns what you type into tiny raised letters, like ᵗʰⁱˢ, or small capitals, like ᴛʜɪꜱ, to paste into a bio, a name or a caption. Instagram and Facebook don't let you change the text size in those fields, so instead of a font, the generator swaps each letter for a Unicode character that's drawn smaller. A few letters have no small version and get a stand-in.

Where they work

Small text generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram bioWorksA tiny line works as a quiet extra, like ᵉˢᵗ. ²⁰²¹ under a shop name. Anything people need, such as hours or contact details, should stay full size.
Instagram nameWorksSmall caps suit the name field because they stay readable. Tiny letters are better kept for a short extra after your name than for the name itself.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workOnly a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores are allowed in a handle, so neither tiny letters nor small caps will be accepted.
Captions, comments and DMsWorksBoth styles show on current phones. Tiny letters are gathered from several Unicode blocks, so on some devices a word looks slightly bumpy, with letters at different heights.
Instagram StoriesWorksPasted small text works, but you don't need it there: the Story text tool has a size slider that shrinks real text, which stays easier to read.
HashtagsDoesn't work#ᵗⁱⁿʸ and #ᴛɪɴʏ are made of different characters from #tiny, so neither adds your post to that tag. Write tags in normal letters.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook asks for your everyday name without unusual characters, so a name in raised letters or small capitals will be refused.

Raised, lowered or small capitals

StyleExampleBest forMissing
Tiny (raised)ᵗʰᵃⁿᵏ ʸᵒᵘ ᶠᵒʳ ¹ᵏAsides, sign-offs, ordinals like 2ⁿᵈ and powers like x²Some letters, including q and several capitals, need look-alike stand-ins
Small capsᴛʜᴀɴᴋ ʏᴏᴜ ꜰᴏʀ 1ᴋNames, labels and short headings that need to be readA small capital X, and small digits
Subscript (lowered, not in this generator)H₂O, CO₂, x₁Chemistry and mathsLowered forms exist for only 17 of the 26 letters

Raised text sits up where an exponent would, so it reads like something said under your breath after the main point. Small caps stay on the line and are much easier to take in, which makes them the better pick for anything people should actually read.

Subscript isn't offered here because too many letters are missing, but all ten lowered digits exist, so you can copy them for formulas: ₀ ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₅ ₆ ₇ ₈ ₉.

Real small text, where you can get it

A few places let you shrink real text, and there it beats any pasted character, because the words stay ordinary and easy to read:

WhereHowWho sees it smaller
Instagram Stories and ReelsUse the Story size slider, or pinch the text, in the editorEveryone who watches
Discord messagesStart a line with -# and a space to get small subtextEveryone in the channel
Your phone's displayChange the text or font size in your phone's settingsOnly you
Web pages you buildUse the small, sup and sub tags in HTML, or a smaller font size in CSSEveryone who visits

Instagram and Facebook text fields, from your bio to a comment, have no size control at all. That's the gap small Unicode characters fill, which is why they're worth using there and almost nowhere else.

Pair small text with bold

Small text only looks small next to something bigger. On its own, a line of small caps simply looks like another font. Put it beside or under a bold word and the contrast does the work: people read the bold part first and the small part second.

WhereExample
Name field𝗠𝗔𝗬𝗔 ᴄᴇʀᴀᴍɪᴄꜱ
First line of a bio𝗦𝗼𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀 ᵐᵃᵈᵉ ᵇʸ ʰᵃⁿᵈ
Caption opening𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, then ꜱʜɪᴘꜱ ꜰʀɪᴅᴀʏ on the next line

Stick to two sizes. Bold, small caps and tiny text all in one bio starts to look like a ransom note.

Questions people ask

Can I make my Instagram bio text smaller?

Not with a setting. Instagram shows bio text at one size, and names, captions and comments work the same way. Tiny letters and small caps only imitate smaller text, using characters that happen to be drawn smaller.

How do I write H₂O or CO₂ on Instagram?

Copy the lowered digits from the comparison above and paste them where you need them. Unicode has all ten, from ₀ to ₉, and they display on current phones. This generator only makes raised characters, so it's right for x² or 1ˢᵗ but not for chemistry.

Can screen readers read small text?

Not reliably. Depending on the app and device, a screen reader may read tiny letters as normal letters, spell them out one at a time, or say nothing. Use small text as decoration and keep anything people need in normal letters.

Does small text work on Facebook?

In posts, comments and Messenger, yes: the characters paste like any other text. Profile names are the exception, because Facebook's name rules don't allow unusual characters.
