Type below to turn your words into gothic blackletter, like ๐”Š๐”ฌ๐”ฑ๐”ฅ๐”ฆ๐”  ๐”ซ๐”ฆ๐”ค๐”ฅ๐”ฑ๐”ฐ, ready to paste into an Instagram bio, name or caption. The letters are Unicode characters, not a font file, so they keep their shape wherever they're pasted. โ€œGothicโ€ also gets used for goth-style glitch text and for plain sans-serif type, so this page covers those too.

Where they work

Gothic font generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram nameWorksThe name field saves gothic letters. Put a capital only at the start of each word, because a name made of gothic capitals is close to unreadable at that size.
Bio headingWorksA gothic first line, such as a studio or band name, sets the tone. The lines under it read faster in plain letters or small caps.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workInstagram handles take only aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, full stops and underscores, so neither blackletter nor glitch characters can be saved there.
Captions and commentsWorksBoth Old English styles show on current phones and computers. Accented letters and digits are left plain, since the gothic alphabets only include the basic Latin letters.
Glitch text in commentsPartlyThe stacked marks display, but they spill into the lines around them, and each app draws them a little differently. Keep glitch to a word or two.
HashtagsDoesn't work#๐”ค๐”ฌ๐”ฑ๐”ฅ won't count as #goth, because it's spelled with different characters. Leave tags in plain letters and style the words around them.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workProfile names have to follow Facebook's name rules, which leave no room for symbols or decorative characters, so gothic letters are refused.

Four things people mean by gothic

โ€œGothicโ€ has been attached to very different kinds of lettering over the centuries. Work out which one you're after first, because each calls for a different style.

If you meanIt looks likeUse
Blackletter, the medieval script๐”Š๐”ฌ๐”ฑ๐”ฅ๐”ฆ๐” Old English or Bold Old English

The alphabet of the Gothic language๐Œฐ ๐Œฑ ๐Œฒ ๐ŒณNothing here: it's a real script, not a style

The name itself began as an insult. Renaissance Italians, who preferred rounder letters copied from older manuscripts, called the medieval style gothic, meaning barbarian, the same put-down they used for pointed medieval architecture. The goth subculture, which grew out of post-punk music around 1980, is a much later use of the same word.

Four kinds of blackletter

Blackletter was never one alphabet. Type historians usually sort it into four main families, and the generator's letters follow the last of them.

  • Textura: tall, narrow and tightly packed, with angular feet, so a page of it looks woven. It's the most formal kind, used across northern Europe for church books and for the first major printed Bible in the 1450s.
  • Rotunda: a rounder, more open blackletter favoured in Italy and Spain. It keeps the heavy strokes but loses much of the spikiness.
  • Schwabacher: a German style from the late 1400s, rounder and more relaxed than textura, with a handwritten swing to it.
  • Fraktur: the German style that took over in the 1500s, named for its broken curves. It stayed Germany's everyday type for books and newspapers into the 20th century, and Unicode's gothic maths letters are modelled on it.

That's why generated gothic text has the curly, broken look of German fraktur rather than the straight, picket-fence rhythm of textura. For a stricter medieval look on a poster or a menu, you'd need an installable font drawn in one of the other styles.

When gothic means sans serif

If you came here after seeing Century Gothic in a font menu, you want something else entirely. In the 1800s American type founders sold plain sans-serif letters under the name gothic, and the label stuck to typefaces such as News Gothic and Century Gothic, which have no blackletter in them at all. Japanese typography uses the word the same way: ใ‚ดใ‚ทใƒƒใ‚ฏไฝ“ means sans serif, and the Windows fonts MS Gothic and Yu Gothic are plain, even-stroked Japanese typefaces.

The Sans serif style above, ๐–ฆ๐—ˆ๐—๐—๐—‚๐–ผ, is the closest match you can paste. It's plainer and less geometric than Century Gothic, so for a design or a document, pick Century Gothic or a similar geometric sans from the app's own font list where it's available.

A dark, gothic profile, piece by piece

Goth accounts that look good tend to mix a little blackletter with a lot of restraint. Here's one way to set up a profile for a jewellery maker, with each style doing one job:

PartWhat to writeWhy
Name๐•พ๐–๐–†๐–‰๐–”๐–œ๐–˜ ๐–†๐–“๐–‰ ๐–‘๐–†๐–ˆ๐–Š ๐Ÿฅ€Bold Old English keeps its strokes at name size, where the thin version fades
Bio, line oneสœแด€ษดแด…แดแด€แด…แด‡ แดŠแด‡แดกแด‡สŸสŸแด‡ส€สSmall caps feel formal without adding more blackletter
Bio, line twoSilver and jet, made to order. Ships worldwide. The facts stay plain, so they can be read and searched
CaptionOne glitched word, such as the time of a drop, with the rest plainA single eerie word is creepier than a whole cursed paragraph

Dark emoji and symbols carry a lot of the mood without touching your letters: ๐Ÿ–ค, ๐Ÿฅ€, ๐Ÿฆ‡, ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ, ๐ŸŒ™ and โ˜พ all suit a goth profile, and the words beside them stay easy to read and search.

Tip: Save heavy Zalgo for Halloween posts and one-off jokes. In a bio it makes the whole profile look broken rather than spooky.

The real Gothic alphabet is something else

Unicode also has a block called Gothic, added in 2001, and it has nothing to do with blackletter. It holds the 27 letters of an alphabet created in the 4th century to write the Gothic language, an East Germanic language that died out long ago. The letters were based mainly on Greek, with some Latin and runic shapes mixed in: ๐Œฐ ๐Œฑ ๐Œฒ ๐Œณ ๐Œด.

Because of the name it's easy to stumble on, but it's a poor choice for styling English. Its letters don't line up neatly with a to z, some phones have no font for them and show boxes, and a screen reader may announce each one by its Unicode name, such as โ€œGothic letter ahsaโ€. Leave it for writing about the Gothic language itself.

Questions people ask

Which gothic style suits an Instagram name?

Bold Old English, as in ๐•พ๐–๐–†๐–‰๐–”๐–œ๐–˜, in most cases. Its strokes are thick enough to survive the small type of a name, while the regular version's hairlines can disappear. Keep a plain word somewhere in your name or bio as well, so people searching in normal letters can still find you.

Can I add umlauts or accents to gothic letters?

Not through the generator. The gothic alphabets only cover a to z, so โ€œGrรผรŸeโ€ comes out as ๐”Š๐”ฏรผรŸ๐”ข, with a plain รผ and รŸ. You can try typing a combining diaeresis (U+0308) after a gothic letter, but whether the dots land in the right place depends on the phone, so check before you post.

Can screen readers read gothic letters?

Not reliably. Depending on the device, a screen reader may read them as normal letters, spell out each one's long Unicode name or skip them. Glitch text is worse, because the stacked marks can be read out too. Keep gothic to a name or a heading and write anything important in plain letters.

Is gothic the same as a dark academia font?

Not usually. Dark academia leans on old-book serif and italic lettering, like ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ, and on typewriter text, more than on blackletter. Try Italic (serif) or Typewriter for that look and save Old English for a single title word.
