Fancy text generator

A fancy text generator rewrites your words in decorative styles, like ๐’ป๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐’ธ๐“Ž cursive, ๐”‰๐”ž๐”ซ๐” ๐”ถ Old English or โ“•โ“โ“โ“’โ“จ bubbles, ready to copy into a bio, caption, comment or chat. Type below and every style updates as you go. The results are built from Unicode characters and symbols rather than an installed font, so they paste into most apps that accept text.

Where they work

Fancy text generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram bio and nameWorksBoth accept fancy text. A letter style and a decoration can sit side by side, though more than two styles in a short bio starts to look cluttered.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workOnly aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, โ€œ.โ€ and โ€œ_โ€ are allowed in a handle, so every fancy style is refused there.
Captions and commentsPartlyEveryday styles show for almost everyone. Look-alike alphabets, such as the Yi and Cherokee styles, rely on the viewer's device having those scripts, and an older one may show boxes.
Invitations in DMs and MessengerWorksA fancy first line pastes into Instagram DMs and Messenger and displays fine. Keep the date, time and address in plain text.
Hashtags and @mentionsDoesn't workFancy versions don't link to the real tag or account. Type them in ordinary letters, even inside a fancy caption.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook's name standards rule out symbols, unusual capitalization and mixed scripts, so fancy text can't go in a profile name.
Email addresses, phone numbers and linksDoesn't workWritten in fancy characters, they stop working: an app won't turn them into tappable links, and anyone who copies them gets the wrong characters.

Nine kinds of fancy, from subtle to loud

The generator sorts its styles into nine groups. Here is โ€œMake it fancyโ€ in one style from each, roughly from the most readable to the least.

Look-alike๊Žญ๊๊€˜๊‚ ๊€ค๊“„ ๊އ๊๊ˆค๊ณ๊ŒฉNovelty, not information

The top half keeps every letter recognisable. Further down, the letters get rounder, busier or, in the last group, swapped for characters from other writing systems that only resemble Latin ones.

How the generator builds each style

Many styles are simple arithmetic. Unicode stores each maths alphabet in order, so bold starts with ๐€ at U+1D400, ๐ is the next code point, and the small letters begin at U+1D41A. Cursive, Old English, outline and the rest each have their own starting point. Where Unicode left a gap because a letter had already been encoded elsewhere, the generator swaps in that older character.

Other styles use a lookup table, letter by letter: small caps, tiny text, upside-down text and the look-alike alphabets. Lines and glitch effects add combining marks after each character, and frames put symbols on either side. The method decides how your text behaves after you paste it:

How it worksStylesYour wordsSearch and screen readers
Replaces each letterCursive, Old English, outline, bubble, small capsGone: each letter is a different characterOften not recognised as words
Adds a mark to each letterUnderline, strikethrough, dottedStill there, with a mark after each letterMixed: some tools ignore the marks, some don't
Wraps the textSparkles, cute frame, flowers, starsUntouchedRead normally, plus the symbols around them

So when a line has to be found or read aloud, wrapping is the safe kind of fancy: โœง๏ฝฅ๏พŸ: *โœง๏ฝฅ๏พŸ:* Make it fancy *:๏ฝฅ๏พŸโœง*:๏ฝฅ๏พŸโœง still contains the words โ€œMake it fancy.โ€ A replacing style looks more dramatic but can hide the words from software that reads them.

Laying out a fancy invitation

Invitations are where fancy text earns its place. A pattern that works in a post or a message: one decorative line to catch the eye, one quieter line, and the details in plain text.

  1. Headline in cursive or Old English: ๐’ดโ„ด๐“Šโ€™๐“‡โ„ฏ ๐’พ๐“ƒ๐“‹๐’พ๐“‰โ„ฏ๐’น
  2. What it is, in small caps: แด›แด แดแดœส€ ษขแด€ส€แด…แด‡ษด แด˜แด€ส€แด›ส
  3. Date, time and place in plain text, so they can be read aloud, copied and searched
  4. How to reply, also plain, such as โ€œReply here by Friday so we can plan the foodโ€

Tip: Keep the decorative line to a few words. Script and Old English slow readers down quickly, and on a phone a long fancy line wraps into something hard to follow.

The style called Fancy, and other look-alikes

One style in the generator is literally named Fancy, and it doesn't use maths letters at all. It borrows syllables and radicals from the Yi script, which is used to write the language of the Yi people in southwest China, chosen because their shapes resemble Latin letters. โ€œMake it fancyโ€ becomes ๊Žญ๊๊€˜๊‚ ๊€ค๊“„ ๊އ๊๊ˆค๊ณ๊Œฉ.

The rest of the look-alike group works the same way. One style swaps in Cherokee letters plus a few Ethiopic ones, like the แˆ standing in for c in แŽทแ—แฆแ‹ แŽฅแ– แŽฆแ—แแˆแŽฉ; another uses mostly Cyrillic letters; a third builds words from currency signs. To someone who reads those scripts the result is nonsense, and a screen reader may skip it or read out stray syllables. They're fine for a joke or one decorative word, not for anything that has to be understood.

Questions people ask

Is fancy text the same as a font?

No. A font changes how letters are drawn on the screen showing them. Fancy text changes the letters themselves into other Unicode characters, which is why it keeps its look in apps that only allow plain text, and why there's nothing to install.

Which fancy styles are safest to use?

Bold, italic, cursive, Old English and small caps show on nearly every current device and stay readable to most people. Wrapping styles such as sparkles and frames are safer still for search, because they leave your words alone. Look-alike alphabets and heavy glitch text are the least dependable.

Why does my fancy text show boxes or question marks?

The device showing it has no font that can draw those characters, so it puts a placeholder in their place. On older phones the usual culprits are look-alike alphabets, boxed capitals and newer symbols. If your readers might be on older devices, stick to bold, cursive, Old English or small caps.

Why do a few letters in my fancy text look slightly off?

Some styles mix characters from different parts of Unicode. Cursive, Old English and outline fill a few gaps with older symbols, and tiny text pulls from several phonetic sets, so a device may draw one or two letters with a different font. Bold and typewriter come from complete sets, so they look the most even.
