Fonts for your Instagram name

Every Instagram account has two names. The username is the @handle: it's part of your profile link, it's what people type to mention you, and it's limited to plain characters. The name is a free-text label you set in Edit profile, and it's the field that accepts styled letters.

So a styled name works like the sign over a shop door. People see it once they're on your profile or looking at you in search, and everywhere else the plain handle does the work.

Instagram search matches what people type against names as well as usernames, which is how you can find a friend by their real name when their handle is something else entirely. But people type plain letters. 𝓕𝓮𝓻𝓷 & 𝓒𝓵𝓪𝔂 is built from maths characters, not the letters f, e, r and n, so a search for “fern and clay” may never connect to it.

The fix is to style one part of the name and leave the useful part plain: who you are, or what you do.

Tip: On a professional account you can choose to show a category label, such as Artist, on your profile. It tells visitors what you do, which leaves the name free to be more decorative.

A name is short and fairly small on a phone screen, which favours styles with clear, even strokes. Here is Fern & Clay in each of the styles shown first above:

• Bold cursive, 𝓕𝓮𝓻𝓷 & 𝓒𝓵𝓪𝔂: the sturdiest script for a name. Every letter comes from one set, so the word looks even.
• Cursive, ℱℯ𝓇𝓃 & 𝒞𝓁𝒶𝓎: lighter and more delicate. Here F and e are older characters that plug gaps in the maths set, and on some phones they look slightly out of step with the rest.
• Small caps, ꜰᴇʀɴ & ᴄʟᴀʏ: reads like a printed logo and stays clear at small sizes. Capital and small letters come out the same, so it suits names that look right in all caps.
• Bubble, Ⓕⓔⓡⓝ & Ⓒⓛⓐⓨ: playful, but the letters inside the circles shrink at name size. One short word is about as much as it carries.
• Sparkles: leaves your letters plain and wraps them in stars and dots, starting ✧･ﾟ: *✧･ﾟ:*. The frame adds 23 characters and the name field has a length limit, so a long name may not fit. A single ✧ on each side gives a similar feel for four characters.

Instagram lets you change your name twice within 14 days. Trying five fonts in the live field uses up both changes in minutes and leaves you waiting out the rest of the fortnight, so do the trying somewhere else.

1. Paste each version into your phone's notes app, one per line, and compare them at normal size.
2. Send your favourite to a friend with a different kind of phone and ask whether any letter shows as an empty box.
3. If the name is cut off or won't save, drop the decoration before you drop the plain word.
4. After saving, search for the plain words in your name from another account and see whether you come up.

Screen readers read a profile's name aloud like any other text. Faced with maths letters, some announce each character's official name, such as “mathematical bold script capital F”, some spell the letters out, and some skip them altogether. A fully styled name can come out as noise or as nothing. The plain word you keep for search helps here too: it's something every listener can hear.
