Instagram auto-replies for fitness coaches

Instagram DM automation lets an online fitness coach pick a word, such as RECIPES or COACH, and message everyone who comments it, at any hour and in any time zone. Below are the words coaches use, four set-ups with the exact first message, freebies worth commenting for, and how to turn a waitlist into paying clients.

Comment words for fitness coaches

Ask people to comment one word in your caption or video. Each word sends something different.

COACH
How your 1:1 online coaching works: the weekly check-in, the app you use, what's included and the monthly price, on one page.
WAITLIST
A place on the list for your next intake. The auto-reply asks for an email first, so you can reach every name on the day spaces open.
RECIPES
The meals from your what-I-eat Reel as one pack, with calories, protein and a shopping list for each.
MACROS
A one-page guide to choosing a starting calorie and protein target, worked through for one example day.
HOME
A no-equipment version of the workout you just posted, for people who train in a living room with no kit at all.
STEPS
The tracker and rules for your next step challenge, sent to everyone who replies to the announcement Story.
CHECKIN
A blank copy of the weekly check-in form your clients fill in, so people see what coaching asks of them before they apply.

4 set-ups to try

Each one shows the conversation it creates. After a comment, the first DM is plain text, as Meta requires, and the link follows once they answer.

  • Recipe pack from a what-I-eat Reel

    Someone comments on your post

    RECIPES

    Public reply under their comment

    Sent, check your DMs 🍳

    First DM (plain text)

Hey, thanks for the comment. The full pack has all five meals from the Reel, each with calories, protein and a shopping list. Want it? Reply here and I'll send it over.Yes pleaseHigh-protein recipe packGet the recipes

Recipe Reels draw comments from people who aren't ready to hire a coach yet. Sending something useful first opens a conversation in your inbox, which is where a coaching enquiry can start once they are ready.

  • Waitlist for the next coaching intake

    Someone comments on your post

    WAITLIST

    Public reply under their comment

Nearly done, the next step is in your DMs

    First DM (plain text)

Thanks for your interest in coaching. Spaces for the next intake go to the waitlist first. Shall I add you? Reply to this message and I'll ask where to email the details.Yes pleaseNext intake: what to expectRead the details

On launch day you can't DM the whole waitlist: automated messages only reach people who wrote to you in the last 24 hours, and official tools don't send mass DMs. The email this set-up collects is how you reach every name when spaces open.

  • Coaching details for price questions in DMs

COACHThanks for asking about coaching. Wondering how it works day to day? The page below covers the weekly check-ins, the app, what's included and the price.1:1 online coaching: how it worksSee coaching

Keywords match whole words, so add COACHING, PRICE and HOW MUCH to the same auto-reply. Enquiries from other time zones often land while you sleep; this one gets the details at once, and your own reply later can go straight to their questions.

  • Step challenge sign-up from a Story

    Replied to your story

STEPSLove that you're joining. Ready for day one on Monday? The tracker below has the daily target, the rules and where to post your check-in each evening.14-day step challenge trackerGet the tracker

People who reply to Stories already watch you most days, so they're warmer than most commenters. Because they messaged you first, the tracker arrives straight after the first message, and a two-week challenge gives them a reason to keep talking to you.

Freebies worth commenting for

  • A 4-week dumbbell-only plan for training at home three days a week
  • A 7-day high-protein meal plan with a printable shopping list
  • What to order at a burger place, a curry house and a pizzeria while tracking calories
  • A one-page weekly tracker for steps, water, sleep and protein
  • A 20-minute hotel-room workout card for weeks when you travel
  • The progress-photo checklist: same light, same time of day, same three angles
  • A calorie and protein calculator spreadsheet with a short how-to
  • A first-30-days plan for people returning after a long break from training

What people ask a fitness coach in DMs

Most messages are versions of the same six questions. Automate the ones with a fixed answer, and keep the ones that need your judgement.

They askSend automaticallyAnswer yourself when
How much is coaching? The COACH card: what's included and the monthly priceThey ask about a payment plan or a shorter commitment
Can I do this at home? The HOME workout, or a clear note that you only program for gymsThey list their equipment and want you to judge it
When do spaces open? The WAITLIST sign-upThey want to start this week
Do I have to count calories? The MACROS guideThey mention a past eating disorder: point them to a doctor or specialist
I'm postpartum, or I have a bad back. Can you help?Nothing: this one is yoursAlways, and ask them to get medical clearance first
What does a week of coaching look like? The blank CHECKIN formThey're comparing you with another coach

Tip: On the Growth and Business plans, AI replies answer other messages using only the business information you write. Add a line saying injury and medical questions get a personal reply, and the AI can tell people you'll answer those yourself rather than guessing.

Posts that earn comments, and the word for each

  • A what-I-eat-in-a-day Reel with RECIPES for the full pack. Show real portions: viewers check whether the food looks like something they'd actually eat.
  • A carousel comparing two lunches with the same calories and very different protein, with MACROS for the guide.
  • A 20-minute workout filmed in a small room with no kit, with HOME for the printable version.
  • A client's story, told with their written permission, with COACH for how coaching works.
  • A walk-through of one client's weekly check-in, shared with permission, with CHECKIN for a blank copy.
  • A countdown Story the week before an intake, with WAITLIST in the text.

Many coaches open intakes in early January and in the weeks before summer. Set the auto-replies up before those weeks start, and test each one by commenting from a second account, since your own comments don't trigger it.

From comment to client: a launch in four steps

  1. Weeks before: post useful content with RECIPES, MACROS or HOME. Everyone who answers the first DM becomes a conversation in your inbox.
  2. Announce the intake. WAITLIST collects emails, which you can download as a CSV for your email tool.
  3. Doors open: email the list with your application form or call link. Post a Story with a reply word as well, since people who reply to a Story can get the link straight away.
  4. Intake closed: change the first DM and the card to the next date, so late commenters aren't sent to a closed form.

Coaching from India? The DMFast store can sell a paid program as a digital product, give away a lead magnet in exchange for an email, and take bookings for free or paid calls, with payments through Razorpay. Coaches elsewhere point the card at their own checkout or booking page.

Rules and risks to know first

  • Transformation posts: get each client's written OK, show typical results, and never promise a number of kilos in a number of weeks. Bodies respond differently.
  • Boosting one of those posts turns it into an ad, and Meta's advertising standards don't allow personal health ads to show before-and-after images.
  • In many places, diet advice for medical conditions is limited to licensed professionals, and the rules differ by country and state. Check yours, and send anyone with a condition to a doctor or registered dietitian.
  • Meta allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of it. A viral Reel can pass Instagram's cap of 750 private replies an hour; DMFast stays under 700 and queues the rest.
  • Going live for a Q&A? Comments made during an Instagram Live can only get a private reply while the Live is still on, so set the word up before you start.
  • Pick words people don't type by accident. A keyword fires on the whole word wherever it appears, so PLAN would also answer “what's your plan for legs?”, while RECIPES or STEPS rarely misfire.

Questions people ask

Can my first DM include the link to my coaching page?

Not when someone comments. Instagram allows only plain text in the first message to a commenter, so ask them to reply, and DMFast sends the card with your link once they do. Story replies and DMs work differently: the person wrote first, so the card follows straight away.

Can I message my whole waitlist when spaces open?

Not through Instagram. Automated messages can only go to someone within 24 hours of their last message, and mass DMs aren't possible with official tools. That's why the waitlist set-up collects emails. A Story with a reply word also helps: everyone who answers it gets the link at once.

Does it work with a personal Instagram account?

No. It needs a professional account, Creator or Business. Switching is free in Instagram's settings and doesn't affect your followers. On Facebook it works with Pages through Messenger, not with Facebook Groups.

Will it answer questions that aren't keywords?

Keyword replies only fire on the words you set. On the Growth and Business plans, AI replies can answer other messages, drawing only on the business information you write, at one credit per reply. When the answer isn't in that information, the AI says someone will get back to them.

Someone commented RECIPES three times. Do they get three DMs?

No. Each person gets one answer a day from each auto-reply. Comments that are only links or promo spam are skipped too, so a busy Reel doesn't fill your inbox with repeats.

My Reel took off before I set this up. Is it too late?

Not if the comments are recent. On paid plans, DMFast can go back over comments from the last 7 days, the window Meta allows for a private reply. Anything older can't get one, so set the word up before you post next time.
