Fancy letters from A to Z

Fancy letters are decorative versions of the alphabet, such as ๐’œ, ๐“, ๐”„, ๐”ธ and โ’ถ, that you can paste anywhere text goes. Type a word to convert it, or copy single letters from the charts below for an initial or a monogram. They aren't a font: each letter is its own Unicode character, mostly borrowed from maths, which is why a few come from a different set and look slightly different.

Where they work

Fancy letters: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram name and bioWorksBoth fields accept fancy letters. A single fancy initial before a plain name, like ๐” Maya, adds style while the name itself stays readable.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workInstagram refuses any character outside aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, full stops and underscores, so not even one fancy letter can go in a handle.
Captions, comments and DMsWorksThe five sets in the charts are long established and show on current phones. Newer styles, such as boxed capitals, are likelier to appear as empty boxes.
Names with accentsPartlyรฉ, รฑ, รผ and other accented letters have no fancy versions, so they stay plain inside a fancy word: Zoรซ becomes ๐’ตโ„ดรซ in cursive.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook asks for a name without symbols or unusual capitalization. Fancy letters don't fit those rules, so a fancy profile name is likely to be refused.
Printed invitationsPartlyFancy letters paste into Word or Google Docs and print, but they're usually drawn by a font made for maths. An installable script font looks better on paper.
HashtagsDoesn't workA fancy tag such as #๐”ด๐”ข๐”ก๐”ก๐”ฆ๐”ซ๐”ค is spelled with different characters from #wedding, so it won't show up under the plain tag.

Fancy capital letters, A to Z

Each row is one capital in five styles. On a phone, press and hold a letter to select it; on a computer, drag across it. Letters that come from an older Unicode set are explained further down.

Small caps have a single size, so one set does the job of both: แด€ ส™ แด„ แด… แด‡ ๊œฐ ษข สœ ษช แดŠ แด‹ สŸ แด ษด แด แด˜ วซ ส€ ๊œฑ แด› แดœ แด  แดก x ส แดข. The q is a stand-in and the x is an ordinary x, for reasons covered in the questions below.

Numbers exist in only two of these sets: outline (๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿš ๐Ÿ› ๐Ÿœ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿž ๐ŸŸ ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿก) and bubble (โ“ช โ‘  โ‘ก โ‘ข โ‘ฃ โ‘ค โ‘ฅ โ‘ฆ โ‘ง โ‘จ). Cursive, bold cursive, Old English and small caps leave digits as they are.

Why some letters come from a different set

Run down the charts and a few letters stand slightly apart: โ„ฌ โ„ฐ โ„ฑ โ„‹ โ„ โ„’ โ„ณ โ„› and โ„ฏ โ„Š โ„ด in cursive, โ„ญ โ„Œ โ„‘ โ„œ โ„จ in Old English, and โ„‚ โ„ โ„• โ„™ โ„š โ„ โ„ค in outline. They are older characters from Unicode's Letterlike Symbols block. When the maths alphabets were added in 2001, Unicode left gaps where these letters already existed, and generators fill the gaps with the older versions.

They were there first because mathematicians already needed them. โ„•, โ„ค, โ„š, โ„ and โ„‚ are the standard symbols for the natural numbers, the integers, the rational numbers, the real numbers and the complex numbers. โ„œ and โ„‘ stand for the real and imaginary parts of a complex number.

Living in a different block means some phones draw them with a different font from their neighbours, so โ„ can look a touch heavier, or โ„ญ a little taller, than the letters around it.

Tip: Need a monogram where every letter matches? Use bold cursive: all 52 of its letters come from one set, with no stand-ins.

Fancy initials and monograms

A single fancy capital is the most readable way to use these letters. ๐’ฎ & ๐’ฅ works as a couple's monogram on a wedding post, ๐•Š & ๐• gives the same pair a sporty look, and a lone ๐“ can stand in for a logo on a shop's posts.

Keep a fancy initial as its own word rather than gluing it to a plain one. In โ€œ๐”—he summer we metโ€, search sees an unfamiliar character followed by โ€œheโ€, and a screen reader may read the capital out by its full Unicode name before carrying on. Written as a separate initial, the same letter breaks nothing.

Names with accents and other alphabets

Fancy alphabets only cover the 26 basic letters. Accented letters such as รฉ, รฑ, รผ and รง have no fancy versions, so the generator leaves them as they are: Zoรซ and Josรฉ come out as ๐’ตโ„ดรซ and ๐’ฅโ„ด๐“ˆรฉ in cursive, with the plain รซ and รฉ standing out. Letters from other alphabets, such as Greek, Cyrillic or Devanagari, pass through unchanged.

  • Keep the name plain and style a word next to it instead, such as a title or a sign-off.
  • Drop the accent only if the person is happy with that. For many names the accent matters.
  • For a careful fix, convert the letter without its accent and type a combining accent after it (for รฉ, U+0301). Phones place accents on fancy letters unpredictably, so check the result on more than one device.

Questions people ask

How do I copy a single fancy letter on my phone?

Press and hold the letter in the chart until it's highlighted, drag the handles so only that letter is selected, then tap Copy. On a computer, drag across the letter and press Ctrl+C, or Cmd+C on a Mac.

Why is the small caps q an o with a hook?

The generator uses วซ, an o with a small hook called an ogonek, because it looks like a small capital Q. Unicode added a true small capital Q, ๊žฏ, only in 2018, long after the rest of the set; this generator sticks with the older look-alike. There is no small capital X at all, so x stays an ordinary x.

Can I use fancy letters on a wedding invitation?

On screen, yes. For print, an installable script or blackletter font is the better choice: you type normal letters, the whole design uses one carefully drawn typeface, and accents and numbers match. Free ones are available from libraries such as Google Fonts.

Which fancy letters are least likely to show as boxes?

The bubble letters on this page were in Unicode by 1993 and the maths alphabets arrived in 2001, so current phones and computers show them all. Trouble is more likely with newer styles, such as boxed capitals.
