Fancy fonts for your Facebook name

You can't use fancy fonts in your Facebook profile name. Facebook asks for the name you go by in everyday life, and its rules exclude symbols, unusual capitalization and characters from more than one language, which leaves no room for styled letters. Try the styles below anyway: they work in your bio, posts, comments and Messenger nicknames.

Where they work

Facebook name fonts: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Profile nameDoesn't workFacebook's rules bar symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeated characters, punctuation and mixed alphabets from names. Styled letters run into those rules, so the change won't go through.
Username (profile link)Doesn't workThe part after facebook.com/ may only use Aโ€“Z, 0โ€“9 and full stops, and needs at least five characters. Capitals and full stops don't make one username different from another.
Page nameDoesn't workPage names need normal, grammatical capitalization and can't include symbols such as ยฎ or unnecessary punctuation. A styled Page name doesn't meet those guidelines.
BioWorksThe short bio in your profile's Intro takes styled text, so a stylish version of your name or nickname can sit there, under the plain name.
Messenger nicknamesWorksEach chat lets you set nicknames for yourself and the others in it. They show only in that conversation and accept styled letters and emoji.
Posts and commentsWorksSign off a post as โ„ณ๐’พ๐“‡๐’ถ or put a bold name in a comment. Anything you write in a post or comment can use these styles.

What Facebook's name rules say

Facebook wants every profile to carry the name people know you by. Its Help Centre lists what a name can't include:

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation
  • Characters from multiple languages
  • Titles of any kind, such as professional or religious ones
  • Words or phrases in place of a name
  • Offensive or suggestive words of any kind

Styled letters collide with the first two. โ„ณ๐’พ๐“‡๐’ถ isn't the name Mira in a pretty font: it's four separate characters, three from a maths alphabet and one from a block of letter-like symbols. The decorations popular in โ€œstylish names,โ€ such as ๊ง and ๊ง‚, are punctuation marks from the Javanese script, so they count as symbols. A mix like Miัa, with a Cyrillic ั among Latin letters, is a textbook case of characters from multiple languages.

What happens if you try anyway

Facebook checks a new name against these rules when you try to save it, and a name that breaks them isn't accepted. You'll find videos promising tricks to slip a stylish name through. Even if one works for a while, the name still breaks the rules: anyone can report it, and Facebook may then ask you to change it or to confirm your real name.

A styled name also works against the main job of a profile name, which is helping people who know you find you. Someone looking for Mira types M, i, r, a. โ„ณ๐’พ๐“‡๐’ถ is a different string of characters, so the search may not connect the two.

Nicknames Facebook does allow

Facebook's rules aren't against nicknames, only against decoration. A nickname can be your first or middle name if it's a variation of your real name, the way Bob is for Robert. You can also add another name to your profile, such as a nickname, a maiden name or a professional name.

That second option is the nearest thing to a stylish name Facebook offers. Add the nickname in plain letters in the About section of your profile (look for Other names), and you can choose to show it at the top of your profile next to your name.

Where a stylish name does work

  • Messenger nicknames: open a chat's settings, choose Nicknames and set one for yourself. It shows only in that conversation, so ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ or โ„ณ๐’พ๐“‡๐’ถ can live there without touching your profile.
  • Your bio: open it with a styled line, like แดษชส€แด€ แด›สœแด‡ ส™แด€แด‹แด‡ส€, and follow with plain details people can read and search.
  • Posts and comments: sign off with a styled name, or use one as the headline of an announcement.
  • Instagram: unlike Facebook, Instagram's name field accepts styled letters, so if you use both apps, that's where a fancy display name fits.

Tip: However much style you add elsewhere, keep your plain name visible on the profile. It's what friends search for and what screen readers can read aloud.

Four styles and how they read as names

StyleExampleHow it reads as a name
Cursiveโ„ณ๐’พ๐“‡๐’ถ ๐“‰๐’ฝโ„ฏ ๐’ท๐’ถ๐“€โ„ฏ๐“‡Elegant but thin at small sizes; the M and both e's are borrowed from an older symbol block
Small capsแดษชส€แด€ แด›สœแด‡ ส™แด€แด‹แด‡ส€Calm and easy to read, the closest of the four to plain text
Bold๐— ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฟClear at any size, a good fit for a chat nickname
Old English๐”๐”ฆ๐”ฏ๐”ž ๐”ฑ๐”ฅ๐”ข ๐”Ÿ๐”ž๐”จ๐”ข๐”ฏDramatic but slow to read; capitals like ๐” are the hardest to make out

In a Messenger header, where names are shown small, bold and small caps are the safest picks. Save cursive and Old English for a bio line or a sign-off, where there's room for the detail to show.

Questions people ask

Can I put a stylish font in my Facebook name?

No. Facebook's name rules exclude symbols, unusual capitalization and characters from more than one language, and styled letters break them. Put the styled version in your bio, your posts or a Messenger nickname instead.

Why did Facebook reject my name?

Usual reasons are symbols or decorations, styled letters, numbers, a title such as Dr, capitals in unusual places, repeated letters, or a word that isn't a name. Retype the name in plain letters with normal capitals and try again.

Can my Facebook Page have a name in a fancy font?

No. Facebook's Page name guidelines ask for grammatical capitalization and rule out symbols such as ยฎ and unnecessary punctuation, so a styled Page name won't be approved. Use the styles in the Page's posts instead.

What can I use in my Facebook username?

Only the letters A to Z, the digits 0 to 9 and full stops, with at least five characters. Capitals and full stops don't make a username different, so mira.bakes5 and MiraBakes5 count as the same one.

How do I set a Messenger nickname?

Open the chat, tap the name at the top to open its settings and look for Nicknames. Choose yourself or someone else, paste the styled name and save it. Everyone in that chat sees the nickname; nobody outside it does.
