Facebook font generator for posts and comments

A Facebook font generator turns your words into bold, italic, cursive and other styles to paste into posts, comments, Messenger and your bio. Facebook has no font menu, so these aren't fonts: each letter is swapped for a look-alike Unicode character, such as ๐† for G, which is why the style survives the paste. The main place they won't go is your profile name.

Where they work

Facebook font generator: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Posts and commentsWorksStyled letters show in posts on profiles, Pages and groups, and in comments and replies. The six styles listed first come from Unicode's maths alphabets, which current phones and computers display.
Messenger chatsWorksThey paste into a chat like any other text. Keep them for a greeting or a single word; a whole message in cursive is slow going on a phone.
Profile bioWorksThe short bio in your profile's Intro takes styled characters. One styled line works well there; leave a phone number or email plain so people can copy it.
Profile nameDoesn't workFacebook's name rules exclude symbols, unusual capitalization and characters from more than one language. Styled letters break those rules, so expect a styled name to be refused.
HashtagsDoesn't work#๐ฌ๐š๐ฅ๐ž is spelled with different characters from #sale, so it usually won't count toward the tag people search for. Type the tag plain and style the words around it.

Six styles for Facebook and what each is good for

Here is โ€œGarage sale this Saturdayโ€ in the six styles this page shows first. Nearly every letter comes from the same Unicode block of maths characters, so they all work on the same devices. What changes is the tone, and what happens to numbers.

StyleExampleGood for

Typewriter๐™ถ๐šŠ๐š›๐šŠ๐š๐šŽ ๐šœ๐šŠ๐š•๐šŽ ๐š๐š‘๐š’๐šœ ๐š‚๐šŠ๐š๐šž๐š›๐š๐šŠ๐šขA notice-board look for a short announcement

Numbers split the six into two camps. Bold, outline and typewriter have digits of their own, so โ€œOpen 8am to 2pmโ€ becomes ๐Ž๐ฉ๐ž๐ง ๐Ÿ–๐š๐ฆ ๐ญ๐จ ๐Ÿ๐ฉ๐ฆ or ๐•†๐•ก๐•–๐•Ÿ ๐Ÿ ๐•’๐•ž ๐•ฅ๐•  ๐Ÿš๐•ก๐•ž. Unicode has no italic or cursive digits, so in the other three styles the numbers stay plain and upright: ๐‘‚๐‘๐‘’๐‘› 8๐‘Ž๐‘š ๐‘ก๐‘œ 2๐‘๐‘š.

Tip: Typewriter letters look like code, which makes them tempting for a promo code such as ๐š‚๐™ฐ๐š…๐™ด๐Ÿท๐Ÿถ. Resist it. Anyone who copies that code gets maths characters instead of S, A, V, E, 1 and 0, and a checkout won't recognise it. Codes, links and email addresses belong in plain text.

Why the italic h is borrowed from physics

Look closely at ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘  in the italic example. The h is โ„Ž, a character Unicode encoded in 1993 as a physics symbol: the italic h that scientists write for a constant in quantum physics. It lives in the Letterlike Symbols block alongside other letters with a technical job, such as โ„• for the natural numbers.

When the maths alphabets arrived in Unicode 3.1 in 2001, that letter wasn't encoded a second time. The italic set has an empty, reserved slot where h would be, and generators fill it with the older โ„Ž. Usually nobody notices. On some phones, though, โ„Ž is drawn from a different font than its neighbours, so it can look a little larger, thinner or out of line.

Cursive and outline borrow letters in the same way, such as โ„ฏ and โ„ด in cursive and โ„ and โ„ in outline. Bold, bold italic and typewriter have no gaps: every letter in those styles comes from one set.

Tip: If the h looks wrong on your screen, use bold italic instead. Its ๐’‰ belongs to the same set as the letters beside it, so ๐’•๐’‰๐’Š๐’” stays even.

Why your profile name has to stay plain

Facebook's help page on names asks for the name your friends call you in everyday life. It also lists what a profile name can't include: symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation, characters from more than one language, titles, and words or phrases in place of a name.

Styled text runs into that list from several sides. Bold, italic and cursive letters come from a Unicode block officially named Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. Look-alike styles such as Faux Cyrillic and Tribal swap in letters from Cyrillic, Cherokee and Ethiopic, which is exactly the mixing of languages the rules exclude. Nicknames are allowed when they're a form of your real name, like Bob for Robert, but they still have to be written in ordinary letters.

Where a styled touch does fit on your profile instead:

  • Your bio in the Intro section can carry one styled line.
  • Posts and comments aren't covered by the name rules, so styled text is fine there.
  • Your cover photo can use any real font you like if you design it as an image. Because it's a picture, it looks identical on every screen.

A garage sale post that mixes styles well

Styled letters work best as a frame around plain facts. Here is how a garage sale post can mix them, line by line:

  • ๐†๐š๐ซ๐š๐ ๐ž ๐ฌ๐š๐ฅ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐’๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐š๐ฒ, in bold, because the first line is what people see in the feed before deciding to read on.
  • Toys, books, a bike and kitchen things, in plain text, so the list reads quickly on any device.
  • 9am to 1pm, 14 Elm Road, also plain, because people copy times and addresses into their maps and calendars.
  • ๐‘๐‘œ ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘ , ๐‘๐‘™๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘’, in italic: a friendly aside that matters less than the facts.

That's two styled lines out of four. Some screen readers read styled letters one character at a time and others skip them, so a post where only the headline and the aside are styled still makes complete sense to someone listening to it.

Questions people ask

Can I change the font Facebook uses for my posts?

No. Facebook shows every post in its own standard typeface and has no font menu for posts, comments or bios. Styled Unicode letters are the workaround: they're different characters rather than a different font, so everyone who reads the post sees them.

Will my friends see my styled post the way I see it?

They get the same characters, but their phone or computer draws them with its own fonts. Bold and italic look much the same everywhere; cursive and outline vary more in shape and weight. A device with no font for these characters shows empty boxes, which is now uncommon.

Can I use styled text in a comment on someone else's post?

Yes. Comments accept the same characters as posts. Keep it short, though: a reply written entirely in bold or cursive can come across as louder than you meant.

How do I turn styled text back to normal on Facebook?

Edit the post or comment, delete the styled words and type them again. No button converts them, because Facebook stores them as different characters, not as formatting that can be switched off.
