Glitch text to copy and paste

Glitch text is ordinary text with small marks stuck above and below every letter, so it looks like a screen that’s failing: s̖̍ỷ̭s͎̉t̖̉ë̖́m̖̀ ë̖́r͎̈́r̖̍o̖̍r̺̉. Type below, pick a light or heavy glitch and copy it. No special font is involved. The marks are Unicode combining characters, the kind that put accents on letters, so the effect lives inside the text and pastes anywhere text goes.

Where they work

Glitch text: where they work
WhereWorks?Notes
Instagram captionsWorksGlitched words post and display on current phones. The light style usually keeps to its own line, so a glitched opening line won’t swamp the rest of the caption.
Instagram commentsPartlyThey post, but the heavy style spills into the comments above and below. In a busy thread that can look like spam, so use the light style there, or none.
Instagram usernameDoesn't workHandles take only a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores, and combining marks can’t be added to them. Put the glitch in a caption or your bio instead.
HashtagsDoesn't workThe marks turn #gameover into a different string of characters, so the tag usually won’t lead to the posts people follow. Leave tags unglitched.
Facebook posts, comments and MessengerWorksFacebook shows the marks in posts, comments and chats. A glitched teaser line followed by plain details works well for an event or a launch.
Facebook profile nameDoesn't workFacebook’s name rules don’t allow symbols, and every glitch mark is an extra character on top of your letters. Expect a glitched name to be refused.

Light glitch or heavy glitch, in numbers

Both styles draw on the same set of marks; the difference is how many. Glitch gives almost every letter exactly one mark above and one below, so the word wobbles but stays readable. Zalgo gives each letter anywhere from one to six above and the same number below, and the letters sink under the pile. Since every mark is a character, the text gets much longer than it looks:

TextCharactersAs GlitchAs Zalgo
system error123478
signal lost113171
error51527

The marks aren’t random, either. They’re picked by where each character falls in the text, counting everything except spaces, not by which letter it is, so the same text always comes out the same way. Swap one letter for another, or add a space, and the marks stay put; add or remove any other character and every mark after it changes.

What real glitches look like

When software really mangles text, it rarely stacks marks. The usual fault is mojibake: text saved in one encoding and opened in another. An é turns into é, a curly apostrophe into ’, and characters that can’t be decoded at all become , the replacement character. Missing fonts show up as empty boxes instead.

Glitch text is the horror-film version of that. For a broken look closer to the real thing, a word like café typed by hand can be funnier than a pile of marks, and it stays readable.

Where glitch text fits

  • Halloween posts, scary stories and creepy captions, where the broken letters set the mood.
  • Gaming clips: lag, a crash, a lost round or a game-over screen.
  • Teasers for a launch or an event, such as a glitched “something is coming” the day before the reveal.
  • Jokes about a bad day or a tired brain, where the text itself looks like it’s giving up.

It doesn’t belong anywhere people need to read carefully: replies to customers, prices, dates, links, instructions or your name. A glitched word is hard to find by searching for it, and screen readers may read out the marks, skip the word or spell it letter by letter.

Keeping glitched words readable

  • Let one word carry the effect: “Monday morning, s̖̍ỷ̭s͎̉t̖̉ë̖́m̖̀ ë̖́r͎̈́r̖̍o̖̍r̺̉” lands better than a fully glitched sentence.
  • Glitch the word people should feel, not the one they need. In “Haunted house tour, Saturday 8pm”, glitch “haunted” and leave the day and time alone.
  • Put a plain version of anything important on the next line, so search and screen readers get the words too.
  • Look at the post on a second phone. Each system positions marks its own way, so a light flicker on yours can look heavier on someone else’s.

Glitch effects for photos and videos

Copy-and-paste glitch only works where text is text. For a glitched title on a Reel, a thumbnail or a poster, use a glitch effect in a video or photo editor instead. Those effects split colours, shake the letters and add scan lines, and they can move, which pasted characters can’t.

Questions people ask

Is glitch text the same as Zalgo text?

They’re made the same way. “Zalgo” comes from a 2004 horror meme and usually means the heavy version that drowns the letters; “glitch” is the looser name and often means something lighter. On this page, Glitch is the light style and Zalgo the heavy one.

Why does glitch text cover the line above it?

The marks have no space of their own. Each is drawn above or below its letter, and apps set their line spacing for normal text, so tall stacks overlap the lines around them. Whether they get cut off at the edge of the box depends on the app.

Why did my emoji split in two?

The generator adds marks after every character except spaces, and some emoji are built from several characters joined together, like 👩‍💻, a woman and a laptop. Marks wedged between the pieces break the join, so you get 👩 and 💻 side by side. Glitch the words and add emoji afterwards.

Can I put glitch text in my Instagram bio?

Yes, it pastes like any other text. Keep it to one word in the light style, because tall marks on the bio’s first line can run up into your name and make both hard to read.
