Spring captions for blossom, showers and light evenings

Paste any of these spring captions under a photo of the first blossom, a puddle someone jumped in or a windowsill full of seedlings. They're grouped by what spring looks like where you are: flowers, rain, longer evenings, gardens, the great coat swap, hay fever and days out at farms, parks and spring festivals.

Tips before you post

  1. Shoot blossom from underneath against blue sky, or with the sun behind the petals so they glow. On a grey day, move in close so the white sky doesn't fill the frame and wash the flowers out.

  2. Don't wait for the weekend. Cherry trees are often at their best for only about a week, and one windy or rainy day can strip a branch bare, so go as soon as you hear they're out.

  3. Stay on the paths in bluebell woods. The plants grow from bulbs that depend on their leaves for food, and a trampled patch can take years to recover.

  4. Tulip and daffodil fields are usually working farms. Shoot from the path or the field edge, look for signs about entry and don't step between the rows or pick the flowers.

  5. After a shower, hold the phone just above a puddle and shoot the reflection of a tree, a building or the sky. From that low angle, a small puddle can look like a lake.

What they get

My month-by-month spring sowing plan for windowsills and small gardens: what to start indoors in March, what goes outside in May and the easiest seeds for a first try.

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

When does spring start?

Two dates are in common use. Weather services count spring as March, April and May, while astronomical spring starts at the March equinox, around March 20. South of the equator everything shifts by six months: spring runs from September to November, so spring photos from Australia or South Africa turn up in September and October.

When do the clocks go forward in spring?

In most of the US and Canada, on the second Sunday in March. In the UK and the EU, on the last Sunday in March. Many countries, including India, China and Japan, don't change their clocks at all, so a caption about the lost hour may puzzle followers there.

What should I photograph for a spring post?

Change is the subject: a bud on a bare branch, a shoot in a pot, a coat left on its hook, the first meal eaten outdoors. Early in the season, a tight shot of one flowering branch hides the bare trees around it and says spring better than a wide view.

What if it still feels like winter where I live?

Write about the small signs: a snowdrop through the frost, the evening light lasting a little longer, the first morning without gloves. Spring rarely arrives all at once, and a line about a false start is often truer than one about sunshine.

Can I use these captions for Easter or Holi?

Some of them. The blossom, picnic and lighter-evening lines fit any spring weekend, but Easter and Holi have their own caption pages, with lines written for egg hunts, church services, colours and water fights.
