Fall captions for leaf piles, orchards and soup nights

These fall captions are ready to paste under your autumn photos, from the first cold morning to the last leaf on the tree. They're grouped by what's in the picture: foliage drives, pumpkin patches and orchards, cozy nights in, boots and layers, game days and bonfires, plus funny ones for anyone who'd rather still be in shorts.

Tips before you post

  1. Shoot foliage on an overcast day or soon after sunrise. Harsh midday sun washes out reds and yellows and adds hard shadows; soft light keeps the colors rich.

  2. Backlight the leaves: with the sun behind a tree, they glow. Stand so a branch or the trunk covers the sun itself, or the photo will flare.

  3. Peak color doesn't arrive everywhere at once. Higher and more northern places usually turn first, and the timing shifts from year to year, so check a local foliage report before a long drive.

  4. Pumpkin patches and orchards are usually busiest on weekend afternoons. A weekday morning gets you rows without strangers in the background, and softer light.

  5. Remember the Southern Hemisphere. If many of your followers are in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, their autumn runs from March to May, and an October post about falling leaves lands in their spring.

Questions people ask

Is it “fall” or “autumn”?

Both name the same season. “Fall” is the everyday word in the US and Canada, while “autumn” is more usual in the UK, Ireland, Australia and India. Everyone understands both, so use whichever your followers say.

When does fall start?

It depends on who's counting. Astronomical fall begins at the September equinox, around September 22 or 23 in the Northern Hemisphere. Weather services use whole months: September, October and November. South of the equator, autumn runs from March to May.

What should I photograph for a fall post?

Color and texture do most of the work: one red tree against a gray sky, wet leaves on a sidewalk, steam from a mug, a stack of pumpkins, a knit sleeve around a cup. Close-ups often say “fall” better than a wide park shot where half the trees are still green.

Can I use fall captions for Halloween or Thanksgiving?

The cozy, orchard and pumpkin patch ones work for both. For costumes, carved jack-o'-lanterns and family dinners, the Halloween and Thanksgiving caption pages have lines written for those days.

What if fall barely happens where I live?

Write about what does change: cooler evenings, the first rain after a dry spell, a festival, the seasonal drinks on your café's menu. A fall caption doesn't need red leaves, only a sense that the year has turned a corner.
