Tips before you post

  1. Take the group photo early, before the dancing starts, while hair is still done, jackets are on the right people and everyone is in the same room.

  2. In a dark bar, turn the flash on for photos of people: it freezes movement, while without it the phone slows the shutter and anyone moving blurs. Save night mode for still scenes like a rooftop view, since it needs the phone held steady for a second or more.

  3. Charge your phone before you leave, or carry a small power bank. The flash, night mode and long videos all drain the battery, and you'll want enough left to get home.

  4. Ask before you tag anyone in a 2 a.m. photo. A friend may not want their manager or their parents to see it, and strangers in the background didn't agree to be in your post.

  5. For a group of six or more, ask someone outside the group to take it, or prop the phone on the bar and use the timer, so the friend who always takes the photo finally gets to be in one.

Pick one real detail from the night: the stranger who took the group photo, the 3 a.m. pizza, the song you finally got the DJ to play. It says more than a general line about how great it was. Tag your friends in the photo so they're notified, and check with them first if anyone looks rough.

Is it safe to post night out photos while I'm still out?

A post or Story with a location tells anyone who can see it where you are at that moment. If your account is public, it's safer to post once you're home, or to leave the location off. A Story shared only with your Close Friends list also limits who sees it.

How do I take better photos in a dark club or bar?

Wipe the lens first, because a greasy lens turns every light into a haze. Get closer rather than zooming, since zoomed shots in low light usually come out grainy. For portraits, step outside under a streetlight or a lit shop window; it's often the best light of the night.

How can I stop family or coworkers seeing my night out Stories?

Instagram's settings let you hide your Story from specific people, and you can share a Story with your Close Friends list instead of all your followers. For the feed, the simplest control is choosing which photos go up, so save the tamer ones for your profile.

What's the difference between pre-drinks and pregaming?

Only where you are. Both mean drinks at someone's home before heading out, often because it's cheaper than paying bar prices all night. “Pregame” is the usual word in the US; in the UK and Ireland it's “pre-drinks”, often shortened to “pres”.
