Father's Day captions for every kind of dad

Here are Father's Day captions for the photo you post on the day, sorted by who you're celebrating: your own dad, the father of your kids, a brand-new dad, a grandad, a stepdad or another man who stepped up. Some poke fun at his habits, some thank him for what he taught you, and the last set is for a year when the day is hard. Add his nickname and post.

Tips before you post

  1. Photograph Dad doing his thing: at the grill, under the car bonnet, on the touchline. A candid shot of a habit beats a stiff posed one and gives the caption its joke.

  2. Recreate an old photo of the two of you: same pose, same spot, and the same shirt if he still has it (he probably does). Put the old one first so the swipe does the work.

  3. If he isn't on Instagram, the post won't reach him by itself. Send him a screenshot or drop it in the family group chat so he sees it, and the comments, on the day.

  4. Ask before posting the photo of him asleep on the sofa with his mouth open. Most dads will laugh; some will want a say in which one goes up.

  5. Film the moment he opens his present instead of photographing it. The reaction is the good part, and a short clip catches it.

Ask people to comment WALLET

End your caption with a line like this:

“Comment WALLET and I'll send it to you in a DM.”

What they get

The engraved wallet order form, with the leather colours, initial styles and the last day to order for delivery before Father's Day.

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

When is Father's Day?

In the US, the UK, Canada, India and many other countries it's the third Sunday of June, which is 20 June in 2027. Australia and New Zealand celebrate on the first Sunday of September, while Spain, Italy and Portugal keep 19 March, St Joseph's Day. Families spread across countries may celebrate months apart.

What do I write for a dad who says he doesn't want a fuss?

Keep it short and specific. One line about a habit only he has, like the road atlas in the car or the 5 a.m. departures, reads as affectionate without being soppy. He'll say he didn't need a post, then show it to everyone he meets.

Can I post for a stepdad, a grandad or another father figure?

Of course. Say who he is to you rather than relying on the label: a line like “dad by every school run since I was eight” tells people the whole story. One group above covers grandads, stepdads, uncles, coaches, brothers and fathers-in-law.

What can a new dad post on his first Father's Day?

A photo with the baby and one honest detail from the early weeks: nappies changed in the dark, the car seat that took forty minutes to fit, the amount of coffee involved. Tired and funny is the usual tone, and the first-Father's-Day group above is written for exactly that.

What if Father's Day is hard for me this year?

You don't have to post at all. If you'd like to, a photo of his watch, his handwriting or the garden he planted, with one line under it, is plenty, and some people celebrate a grandad, an uncle or a friend's dad instead. Posting to your Story, which disappears after 24 hours, can feel lighter than a permanent post.
