Tips before you post

  1. Shoot in the first hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. Midday sun makes harsh shadows under eyes and noses, and a phone camera overexposes pale clothes.

  2. Squinting in a photo is not a failing. Tilt a hat brim down or turn so the sun is behind your shoulder, and the face will look relaxed.

  3. Hold the phone away from your skin when you can. Hot phones can dim the screen or shut the camera app, and a sweaty thumb smudges the lens.

  4. Keep an anchor detail, like a specific drink, a towel pattern or the place name, in the caption. It turns a generic sunny photo into your summer.

  5. Make a carousel of the whole day: the packed bag, the ride, the food, the sunset. Put the strongest frame first, because that's what most people see.

  6. If a photo shows other people's children at the pool or beach, crop to your own group or ask first. Strangers did not agree to be on your grid.

Turn comments into DMs

Ask people to comment SUMMER

End your caption with a line like this:

“Comment SUMMER and I'll send it to you in a DM.”

What they get

My summer menu with prices for barbecue boxes, cold drinks and party platters, plus the dates I'm taking pre-orders.

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

What is a good caption for a summer photo?

One that names something specific from the day: the ice lolly flavour, the lake you drove to, the book you didn't open. Short lines work best on bright photos because the image does the talking. Save longer captions for carousels where each frame has a story.

How long should a summer caption be?

Anything from three words to two sentences works. Instagram hides everything after the first line or two behind “more”, so put the best part first. A long caption is fine if it is a story, such as a road trip diary, but a quick line is easier to scroll past in a good way.

Should I use emoji in summer captions?

A single one is plenty. The sun, waves or ice cream emoji at the end of a line can set the mood, but stacking six of them hides your words. Emoji do not need to match the photo exactly; sometimes a small unexpected one is funnier.

How do I caption a photo of a lot of summer activities?

Use a carousel and one caption that covers the day, like a one-line list. Something like a run of places or foods in the order you visited them works well, and each swipe becomes the next item.
