Tips before you post

Switch the flash off. In a mirror it fires straight back at the lens and leaves a white starburst over the phone or your face. Light yourself instead: stand facing a window or a lamp, with the light on you rather than on the glass.
Wipe the mirror and your phone's back lens first. Fingerprints and toothpaste spots show up in the photo, especially where the light catches them.
Use the back camera, with the screen facing you and the lens facing the mirror. You can see the shot as you take it, and on most phones the back camera is the sharper of the two.
Keep the phone upright and parallel to the mirror. Tilting it makes door frames lean and stretches whatever is closest to the lens.
Writing on your clothes comes out backwards. Flip the photo horizontally before posting; in the iPhone Photos app the flip button is in the Crop tool.
Check the reflection for other people in gyms and shops, and keep the camera out of changing rooms, where many gyms don't allow phones at all.

What should I caption a mirror selfie?

Say what the photo is for. If it's the outfit, name a piece or where it came from. If it's the gym, say what you trained. If it's a lift or a hotel, say where you're heading. One line is plenty, because the photo already shows the rest.

Why is the writing backwards in my mirror selfie?

The camera is photographing your reflection, and a reflection is reversed left to right, so text reads backwards. Flip the photo horizontally to fix it. Everything else swaps sides too, so a side parting, a watch or a tattoo will move to the other side.

Where's the best place to take a mirror selfie?

Somewhere with a large, clean mirror and light falling on you rather than on the glass: a hallway mirror near a window, a well-lit lift, a fitting room. Avoid standing with a bright window behind you, which leaves you as a dark shape against the glare.

How do I hide my face in a mirror selfie?

Hold the phone in front of your face so the phone and its case cover it, or frame the shot from the neck down. In a Story you can also put a sticker or emoji over your face before posting. Check the reflection for other things that give you away, like a name badge or the view from a window.

Why do my legs look short in mirror selfies?

Usually the phone is held high and tilted down, so the camera looks down at you and your feet end up farthest from the lens. Lower the phone to around waist height, keep it level, and step back from the mirror so your whole body fits without tilting.
