Model bios for Instagram

A model's Instagram bio works like the top line of a comp card: the kind of modelling you do, where you're based, and your agency or how to book you. Clients and agencies skim it in seconds, so these bios keep the facts plain and the personality short, for signed, freelance and new models.

Write your own

A bio that works usually has the same few parts. Fill them in for yours, or start from the example.

  1. What you model
  2. Where you're based or travel
  3. Signed or freelance
  4. Where to see stats and digitals
  5. How to book you

Tips for your bio

  1. Keep measurements in a highlight called Stats or Digitals and update it when anything changes. Clients compare the numbers with recent unretouched photos, and figures that don't match the pictures cost you trust.

  2. Tag your agency with an @ rather than typing its name. The handle becomes a link, so clients reach the real agency in one tap instead of searching and landing on a lookalike account.

  3. Be wary of DMs offering representation or guaranteed work for a fee paid up front, or asking you to move the chat to another app straight away. Before replying, contact the agency through its own website or official account.

  4. An account for a child under 13 has to be run by a parent or manager, and Instagram asks for the bio to say so. A plain line such as “Managed by mum” does that and tells brands who they're dealing with.

  5. Use a clear, recent headshot as your profile picture, without heavy filters. It's the first image a casting team sees, and it should look like the person who walks into the room.

  6. If you freelance, put your limits in the bio, such as “no nude or lingerie work”. It turns away requests you'd refuse anyway and gives you an easy line to point to when someone pushes.

Questions people ask

What should a model put in an Instagram bio?

The kind of modelling you do, where you're based, whether you're signed (tag the agency) or freelance, and how to book you. Height and sizes can go in the bio, but many models keep the bio short and point to a Stats highlight instead.

Should I put my measurements in my bio?

You can. It helps clients filter quickly, but sizes take a lot of your 150 characters and go out of date. A highlight with recent digitals and your full stats (height, bust or chest, waist, hips, dress or suit size, shoe size) has room for everything.

What does TFP mean in a model's bio?

TFP stands for “time for prints”, sometimes read as “trade for print”: an unpaid shoot where the model and photographer swap their time for the photos. “Open to TFP” tells photographers you'll consider these shoots; “paid work only” tells them you won't.

How do I write a bio as a new model without an agency?

Say you're new and what you're looking for: test shoots, an agency or paid work in a certain area. Add your city and point to a highlight of digitals. Honest beats grand, and agencies are used to seeing new faces start from nothing.

What are digitals?

Digitals, also called polaroids, are simple unretouched photos of a model: face, profile and full length, in plain fitted clothes against a plain wall, with little or no makeup. Agencies use them to see what you look like today, so keep a current set in a highlight.
