Instagram bios for lawyers

A lawyer’s bio should say what area you work in, where, and what the account is for, without promising an outcome. Copy a bio below, swap in your practice area, and read the tips on advertising rules before you add a call to action.

Tips for your bio

  1. Check your regulator’s advertising and social media rules before you post. Many bar and law society bodies restrict claims such as “best”, “leading” or “no win, no fee” wording, so keep the bio descriptive and let the work speak.

  2. State that posts are general information, not legal advice. People will message you about their own case, and a clear line sets the boundary before you accidentally form a client relationship by DM.

  3. Never mention a client, a case or a detail someone could recognise, even in a joke. Confidentiality rules apply to a Reel the same way they apply to a meeting room.

  4. Put your practice area in the name field too, for example “Priya | Employment lawyer”. Instagram searches the name and username more than the bio, and people search for the problem they have.

  5. Use highlights for “Rights explained”, “FAQs” and “How to book”. Someone deciding whether to call a lawyer usually wants to see how you explain things first.

Questions people ask

What should a lawyer put in an Instagram bio?

Your role and practice area, where you work and what the account is for. Add one line that it is general information, not legal advice, and one next step, such as a booking link. Leave out client names and any promise of results.

Can lawyers advertise on Instagram?

In most places, yes, but regulators set rules on what an advert can say. Many restrict superlatives, guarantees and comparisons with other firms. Check your own regulator’s guidance, because the rules differ by country and sometimes by state.

Should my bio say “attorney” or “lawyer”?

Use the title that is correct and legally protected where you practise. In the US, “attorney” is common, in the UK you may be a solicitor or barrister. Do not use a title you are not entitled to, even as a joke.

Is it risky to answer legal questions in DMs?

It can be. Giving personal advice to someone who is not a client can create duties you did not mean to take on. Many lawyers reply with general information and ask the person to book a consultation for anything specific.

How long can an Instagram bio be?

150 characters. Spaces, emoji and line breaks all count. Each bio above fits, and the counter beside it shows the length before you copy.
