What is an Instagram Shop?

An Instagram Shop is a storefront of your products inside Instagram, built from a product catalog and connected to your account. People browse items there and then buy. Availability and checkout options depend on your country, so treat this page as the concept, not a set-up guide.

A storefront inside Instagram that shows products from a catalog connected to your account. Where buyers pay can differ: in the app or on your own website.

Selling and payments

What Meta’s documentation says

Meta’s Commerce Platform page says its tools let ecommerce solutions and retailers sell their products “across Meta technologies, including Shops, Marketplace, and Instagram Shopping”. It describes the work as managing a product catalog and order flows, using the Graph API.

The Shops ads page adds the building blocks. A shop needs a Facebook Page or an Instagram account connected to it, and a catalog connected to it. Products in the catalog can be grouped into product sets, which ads then use.

That page also says that, in this setup, buyers discover products and build their carts on Facebook and Instagram, and the final checkout happens on the seller’s own website. Meta calls that offsite checkout. Your own payment tools stay in charge of taking the money.

What to check before you plan around it

  • Whether Shops is available in your country. The Shops ads guide refers to a field listing the countries where offsite checkout is enabled for a shop, which suggests it varies by country.
  • Whether your account type and products meet Meta’s commerce eligibility rules. The guide links to a commerce eligibility page for Shops ads.
  • Whether you want buyers to pay in Instagram or on your own site, since the options available to you may differ.
  • Who manages the catalog: you by hand, a feed, or a store platform connected to Meta.

We did not read an official page confirming current availability in any specific country, so we do not list countries here. Open the Shop settings in your own app and Meta’s commerce eligibility page.

Shop, link in bio and DMs together

A shop is passive: people have to open it. Many sellers combine it with a link in bio page for items outside the catalog and with replies in DMs for people who ask about a price. They are different routes to the same checkout, so keep prices the same in each place.

Tip: Keep product titles in the catalog short and specific, such as “Linen shirt, sand, size M”. Those titles show on cards and in ads, so a vague one costs you clicks.

An example

A ceramics studio uploads forty mugs and bowls to a catalog and connects it to its Instagram account. Visitors browse the shop, add pieces to a cart and finish paying on the studio’s own website.

Questions people ask

What is an Instagram Shop?

It is a storefront on your Instagram profile showing products from a catalog you have connected. Buyers browse items there. Meta’s Shops ads guide describes the checkout happening on the seller’s own website in the setup it covers.

Do I need a catalog for an Instagram Shop?

Meta’s Shops ads guide says a catalog must be connected to the shop, along with a Facebook Page or an Instagram account. The catalog holds each product’s title, image, price and link.

Is Instagram Shop available in every country?

Not necessarily. Meta ties offsite checkout to a list of enabled countries for each shop, and eligibility rules apply. Check the Shop settings in your own app and Meta’s commerce eligibility page for your country.

Can customers pay inside Instagram?

That depends on what Meta offers in your country at the moment. The Shops ads guide we read describes offsite checkout on your own website, so we cannot say more about in-app payment. Check your own app.

Is an Instagram Shop the same as a Facebook Shop?

Meta’s documentation treats Shops as one commerce product across Facebook and Instagram, with a catalog connected to a Page or an Instagram account. How each app presents it can differ, so check both.
