Tips before you post
State the rules in the caption itself: how to enter, the closing date and time with a time zone, who is eligible, how the winner is chosen and how you will contact them. Vague giveaways get complaints in the comments.
Meta’s promotion guidelines ask you to say clearly that the promotion is not sponsored, endorsed or run by Instagram, and they make you responsible for following local laws on prizes and contests. Read the current guidelines before you launch.
Pick an entry method you can check. “Comment and follow” is easy to verify; “tag three friends” invites spam and can annoy people who are tagged.
Warn people that scammers pretend to be giveaway hosts. Say in the caption that you will only message the winner from this account and will never ask for payment or a password.
Photograph the real prize in daylight, and put the closing date on the first image so it survives a screenshot.
Announce the winner in a Story or a pinned comment, not only by DM, so entrants can see the draw was real.
Questions people ask
What should a giveaway caption include?
The prize, how to enter, the closing date and time, who can take part, and how the winner will be picked and contacted. A line saying the giveaway is not run by Instagram is also part of Meta’s promotion guidelines.
How long should a giveaway run?
Most last between three days and a week. That is long enough for people to see the post and short enough that the prize stays exciting. There is no official length, so choose one and state the end date clearly.
How do I pick a winner fairly?
Use a random method you can show: a random-number draw or a picker tool, applied to a list of valid entries. Record the draw or screenshot it, and say in your announcement how it was done.
Can I ask people to tag friends to enter?
You can, but it often brings spam and annoys the people who get tagged. Asking for a comment on a question is simpler. Check Meta’s current promotion guidelines for what is allowed.
Can I use these captions for a business giveaway?
Yes, as a starting point. Replace the details with your own prize and dates, and do not make claims about the product that you cannot support.
