Tips before you post

  1. Shoot the cake while the candles are still lit and use burst mode for the blow-out. A second after the flames go out, the moment is gone.

  2. Put what matters in the first line. The feed hides long captions behind “more” after a line or two, so lead with the name or the age and save the thank-yous for later.

  3. For a friend's birthday, tag them in the photo and add one detail only the two of you would get. Ask before posting an old photo they might hate.

  4. Posting your child's party? Crop out house numbers, school logos and any invitation that shows your address before you share it.

  5. Turn the party into a carousel: the cake first, then the people, then the mess. One post can hold several photos and videos, so nobody gets left out.

  6. On a milestone birthday, let number candles or a foil balloon show the age in the photo, so the caption can be about something else.

What should I write in a caption for my own birthday?

Something short about the day itself: the cake, the people, the plan, or your age if you want to share it. One real detail, like the bakery spelling your name wrong, says more than a general line about getting older. If friends made the day happen, tag them in the photo.

How do I make a birthday post for a friend feel personal?

Pick a photo that means something to the two of you, then add one specific detail: where you met, a running joke, the thing they always order. Tag them in the photo or mention their @username so Instagram notifies them. If the photo is unflattering, ask first, or post it as a Story, which disappears after a day.

Should I put my age in my birthday caption?

Only if you want to. On milestone birthdays the number is often the point of the post, and number candles or a balloon in the photo can say it for you. In other years plenty of people leave it out, and nobody minds.

What is a golden birthday?

It's the birthday when the age you turn matches the day of the month you were born, like turning 27 on the 27th. It happens only once, so people often mark it with gold balloons, gold candles or something gold to wear. Some call it a champagne birthday.

Can I change a birthday caption after posting it?

Yes. On Instagram, tap the three dots on your post and choose Edit to fix the caption, add a tag or correct a misspelled name. The post keeps its likes and comments.
