Tips before you post
Photograph jack-o'-lanterns at dusk, while the sky still has some blue in it. In full dark the glowing face is all that shows up; a little leftover daylight keeps the pumpkin's shape and the porch in the shot.
Take your costume photos in the first hour of the night. Face paint creases, wigs slide and fake blood smears once the party gets going.
Post a couple or group costume as a carousel: the whole group first so the theme reads, then a close-up of each person, tagged in their own photo.
Before posting trick-or-treat photos, look for a child's name on a bucket, a school logo on a costume or a house number on the porch. Posting the next morning also means you're not sharing where you are while you're out.
Dress pets for the photo, not the whole evening: costume on, treat ready, burst mode, costume off. If the animal freezes, flattens its ears or tries to back out of it, skip the shot.
If you're dressed as a character, name it somewhere in the caption. Otherwise the comments fill up with wrong guesses, which is funny for about five of them.
Questions people ask
What should I write in a Halloween caption?
Say what you're dressed as, especially if it needs explaining, then add one detail from the night: the glue-gun burns, the candy count, the friend who skipped the group theme. Short lines suit costume posts because the photo does most of the work.
When should I post my Halloween costume?
Whenever you wear it. Parties often fall on the weekend nearest October 31, so plenty of people post the same costume twice: once from the party and once on the night itself. Nobody minds a second round.
Can I post photos of other people's kids from trick-or-treating?
Ask their parents first. Trick-or-treating and school parades put a lot of children in one frame, so crop to your own child or check with the other families. Schools often have their own rules about photos from class events, too.
What can I post if I'm not dressing up?
Post what you did instead: the candy bowl by the door, the pumpkin you carved, the film you watched from behind a cushion. The last group on this page is written for people who stayed home or handed out candy.
What's a good caption for a couple's costume?
Name the theme so people get it, then add the behind-the-scenes part: who picked it, who ended up with the worse half, how long the debate lasted. If the costume only works as a pair, make sure you're both in the first photo.
