Tips before you post
Face a window instead of standing with your back to one. Soft daylight from the front evens out skin and puts a small highlight in your eyes; light from behind turns you into a silhouette.
Hold the phone a little above eye level and bring your chin slightly forward. The front lens is wide, so whatever sits closest to it, usually the nose or chin, looks bigger than it is.
Use the timer, or press a volume button, which works as a shutter on most phones. Tapping the screen shakes the phone just as it takes the picture, a common cause of soft selfies.
Wipe the front lens before you start. It sits right where your thumb and cheek touch the phone all day, and a smudge is a common reason a selfie looks hazy.
For a car selfie, park first and turn the engine off. Light through a windshield is soft and even, and it will still be there in two minutes.
Questions people ask
What's a good caption for a selfie?
Something short that adds what the photo can't show: why you took it, what's new, or how many takes it needed. A new haircut, a sunny day or a long week is reason enough. If the selfie speaks for itself, a single emoji works too.
Why does my selfie look different from the preview?
Most phones show the front-camera preview mirrored, the way a bathroom mirror does, then save the photo unflipped, the way other people see you. Faces aren't perfectly symmetrical, so the saved version can look slightly off. On an iPhone, Settings > Camera > Mirror Front Camera saves selfies as previewed; many Android camera apps have a similar option.
Should a selfie go on my feed or my Story?
Post it to your feed if you want it on your profile for good. A quick hello, a bad-hair-day joke or a “look where I am” suits a Story, which disappears after 24 hours unless you add it to a Highlight.
How do I fit several people into one selfie?
Hold the phone higher and at full arm's length, and have everyone lean in so faces sit at a similar distance from the lens. Wide lenses stretch whatever is near the edges, so put whoever minds least on the outside. A phone on a stand with the timer beats one stretched arm.
What should I write under a no-makeup selfie?
Something matter-of-fact usually reads best: the coffee you're drinking, the fact that you slept in, the day you're about to have. It's a normal photo of your face, so the caption doesn't have to make a statement unless you want it to.
