Tips before you post

  1. Write your name inside your cap, or add a small sticker, before a cap toss. Mortarboards all look alike once they land.

  2. Photograph a decorated cap from above before you put it on. Once it's on your head, only the people sitting behind you can see the top.

  3. Do the cap-and-gown photos before ceremony day if you can. On the day itself, the popular spots on campus tend to be crowded and you'll be pulled between family groups.

  4. At some schools the folder handed out on stage is empty and the real diploma arrives by mail later. Save a second, smaller post for the day it comes.

  5. Outdoor ceremonies mean bright sun and squinting relatives. Take the family photos in open shade, like under a tree or a building's overhang, so faces light evenly.

  6. Preschool and kindergarten ceremonies are full of other people's children. Crop to your own child before posting a class photo, or ask the school what it allows.

What they get

Open dates and prices for cap-and-gown photo sessions, plus the campus spots I shoot at and what to bring on the day.

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

What should a graduation caption say?

Usually three things fit in a line or two: what you finished, how it feels and who helped. A hint about what's next is a good extra if you know it. Leave out anything you wouldn't share with strangers, like your new home address or your student ID number.

When should I post graduation photos?

There's no set time. Many graduates share a cap-and-gown photo shoot in the weeks before the ceremony, then post the ceremony on the day or the day after. If you're waiting for the official photographer's pictures, a quick Story on the day lets friends know it happened.

How do I thank people in a graduation caption without writing an essay?

Tag them in the photos rather than listing every name in the caption. A carousel helps: one photo with your parents, one with your roommates, one with the teacher who wrote your reference letter. The caption can then be one line, and everyone tagged still gets notified.

What do I write when I'm posting my child's graduation?

Their name, what they finished and one detail from the years in between, like the science fair posters or the early drop-offs. Teenagers and college graduates usually have opinions about which photo goes up, so ask before you post.

Do these work for a master's, PhD or nursing graduation?

Yes. One group covers graduate and professional degrees, with lines about hooding, dissertations, the bar exam, residency and nursing boards. Swap in your own milestone, like a defense date or a pinning ceremony, to make a line fit your program.
