Minimalist bios that say just enough

A minimalist Instagram bio keeps only what a visitor needs: a few plain words, often lowercase, with a dot or a slash where a sentence would go. Below are original bios written that way, from bare lists to place-and-year lines, plus clean bios for studios and shops and tips for keeping the rest of the profile just as quiet.

Write your own

A bio that works usually has the same few parts. Fill them in for yours, or start from the example.

  1. What you do, as one noun
  2. Two or three things you care about
  3. A place or a year, if it helps
  4. A next step, only if you sell

Tips for your bio

  1. Cut adjectives before nouns. “Ceramicist” tells a visitor more than “passionate creative soul”, and it leaves room for one detail that is yours alone, like the clay you throw or the day the studio opens.

  2. Choose one separator and stick to it. A middle dot (·), a bar (|) and a slash (/) all read cleanly, but two kinds in one bio look accidental. If your name field holds a role, use the same mark there.

  3. Leave web addresses out of the bio text. Instagram doesn't make them tappable, and they use characters a short bio can't spare. The links field shows under the bio as a proper link.

  4. Coordinates make a tidy location line. Round them to two decimal places, which is about a kilometre, and use your city's centre: “38.72° N, 9.14° W” says Lisbon without pointing at your street.

  5. A professional account adds a category label and contact buttons to the profile. For a barer look, you can hide both in the profile display settings; your name, bio and link stay put.

  6. Show the finished bio to someone who has never seen your account. If they can't tell from the name, bio and first row of posts what you share, add one noun back. Minimal should feel calm, not blank.

Questions people ask

What is a minimalist Instagram bio?

A bio cut down to its essentials: usually three to ten words, often lowercase, with a separator such as · or / instead of full sentences and no more than one neutral emoji. It leaves the mood to your photos, so it suits accounts whose grid is already calm.

How do I make my bio more minimal?

Delete adjectives and filler first, then swap “and” for a separator. Keep one emoji at most and give each idea its own short line. Then read it on your profile, where your name sits above it: if a line repeats what the name or category already says, cut it.

Should a minimalist bio be all lowercase?

Lowercase suits the bio itself, because it looks calm. Keep your name field in normal capitals so it reads properly in search results and tags, and write any DM keyword in capitals too, or it disappears into the rest.

Can a business have a minimalist bio?

Yes, as long as three things survive the cut: what you sell, where or for whom, and how to buy or book. Architecture practices, ceramicists, furniture makers and small fashion labels often keep to two or three short lines and let a tidy grid show the work.

Which symbols look minimal in a bio?

Plain, single-colour marks: the middle dot ·, the bar |, the slash /, the arrow →, the circle ○ and the degree sign °. They're ordinary text characters, not emoji, so they follow your text colour in light and dark mode instead of adding a spot of colour.
