Emoji-only bios for Instagram

Emoji-only bios swap words for pictures: three to six emoji that show what you love, where you're from or what you post. The ones here are grouped by theme, with a set that adds a word or two for shops, and tips on how emoji look on other phones, how screen readers say them and what they can imply by accident.

Write your own

A bio that works usually has the same few parts. Fill them in for yours, or start from the example.

  1. One emoji for what you do or love most
  2. One for where you're from or live
  3. One for a habit or a mood
  4. Optional: a word or two for the next step

Worked example

🎻 🇵🇱 ☕ lessons: DM VIOLIN

Tips for your bio

  1. Listen to it once. VoiceOver and TalkBack read out each emoji's name, so 🏄‍♀️🌊☀️ is heard as something like “woman surfing, water wave, sun”. If the names add up to a fair description of you, the bio works for people who can't see it too.

  2. Put your words in the name field. A row of emoji gives search no words to match, so a name field like “Priya | Baker” or “Tom | Trail runner” lets people find you while the bio stays all pictures.

  3. Apple, Google, Samsung and others each draw their own emoji, so a row chosen to match in colour on one phone can clash on another. Choose emoji for meaning, like 🎸 or 🍜, rather than for an exact shade of pink.

  4. Very new emoji can break on older phones. Joined ones split into their parts instead of vanishing: the phoenix 🐦‍🔥, added in 2023, shows as 🐦🔥 on a phone that doesn't know it, which reads more like a barbecue.

  5. Some emoji carry a second meaning online. 🍑 and 🍆 are widely read as innuendo, so a fruit-and-veg bio for a café or a family account is safer with 🍓, 🥕 or 🍋.

  6. Flags are built from two letter symbols, so a device without the flag shows the letters. Many Windows computers do this, which means 🇵🇹 can appear as “PT” to someone browsing on a laptop.

Questions people ask

Can an Instagram bio be only emoji?

Yes. Instagram doesn't require words in a bio, and an emoji-only bio is a common style. Three to six emoji works well: enough to say something about you, few enough to take in at a glance.

How many characters does an emoji take up?

Sometimes more than it looks. Simple emoji are one symbol, but flags are built from two, skin tones add a modifier, and joined emoji such as 👩‍💻 or 🐈‍⬛ combine several pieces. A bio full of joined emoji can reach the 150-character limit sooner than the number of pictures suggests.

Should I put spaces between the emoji?

Spaces make each emoji easier to pick out, so they suit rows that work as a list, like hobbies. With no spaces, a row reads as one little scene, which suits combinations like 🏄‍♀️🌊☀️. Arrows between emoji, as in 🏫 ➡️ 🎓, turn the row into a timeline.

Is an emoji-only bio good for a business?

Rarely on its own, because customers need words for what you sell, where you are and how to order. Keep the emoji for mood and add a short plain line: “🎂🧁🍪 orders: DM BAKE” keeps the look and still tells people what to do.

How do I choose which emoji to use?

Look at your last nine posts and pick the three things that show up most, then one for a place or a mood. If two emoji say the same thing, like ☕ and 🫖, keep one. Each emoji should tell a visitor something the others don't.
