Travel bios for Instagram

A good travel bio says how you travel, not just that you love it: on a budget, by train, with kids, in a van, two weeks a year. That detail tells a stranger whether to follow. Below are bios for people who post trips for friends and for creators who share guides, with a formula and tips on locations, flags and links.

Write your own

A bio that works usually has the same few parts. Fill them in for yours, or start from the example.

  1. How you travel
  2. Where you're based or heading
  3. A detail only you have
  4. What you share or how to reach you

Worked example

Slow travel by train 🚆 Based in Porto, usually in Spain Bakeries rated honestly Free route notes: link below

Tips for your bio

  1. Windows computers usually show flag emoji as two letters, so 🇯🇵 appears as JP to anyone viewing your profile there. Write the country's name if it matters, and treat flags as decoration.

  2. Name your travel style: budget, by train, with kids, step-free, in a van. It tells a stranger in a few words whether your trips look like the ones they plan, which a line about loving travel can't.

  3. A “now” line (“Now: Hanoi 📍”) only works if you change it when you move. It also tells strangers where you are today, so some solo travellers give a home base instead and tag places after they've left.

  4. Name highlights after places, not moods: “Japan”, “Alps by train” and “Packing” are easier to tap than “wanderlust 3”. The bio can then say “Guides in the highlights” and leave the detail to them.

  5. Working with hotels or tourism boards? Add an email contact button instead of typing the address, and spend the 150 characters on what you cover.

  6. Point your first link at what the bio offers. If the bio promises itineraries, the link should open the itineraries, not a homepage with a menu.

Questions people ask

What should I write in a travel Instagram bio?

How you travel, where you're based and what someone gets from following: honest hotel reviews, train routes, trips with kids. One line of personality is plenty. Skip “wanderlust” on its own: it is everywhere and tells a visitor nothing about your trips.

Should I put my current location in my bio?

Only if you'll keep it current and you're happy for strangers to know it. A home base, like “Based in Leeds, usually away”, never goes stale, and you can still tag each place in your posts.

How do I show how many countries I've visited?

A number is enough: “31 countries 🌏”. A row of flags takes more space than it looks, because each flag is two special letter characters joined together, so it may count as more than one. Next to the number, add something only you know, like the country you'd go back to tomorrow.

How can a travel creator send an itinerary to people who comment?

Use a comment-to-DM tool such as DMFast. Someone comments a word like PLAN, gets a short public reply and a DM. Instagram only allows plain text in that first DM, so it asks them to reply, and the itinerary link follows. Put the word in your bio and say it in the Reel.

What is a good bio for a travel couple or family?

Say who travels and how: “Two of us and a toddler, mostly by train” or “Married, in a van, on a budget”. If it isn't obvious whose voice the captions are in, say so, and add a next step if you share plans or guides.
