Write your own

A bio that works usually has the same few parts. Fill them in for yours, or start from the example.

  1. Who you are, in a few words
  2. What you love or what you do
  3. One detail that is only yours
  4. A next step or a sign-off

Worked example

Lucía 🌻 Maestra de primaria y fan del café de olla De Puebla a Madrid Recetas de mi abuela cada domingo

Tips for your bio

  1. Accents change meaning, so don't drop them. Año is “year”, but without the tilde it is ano, which means anus. Papá is dad, while papa is a potato in Latin America.

  2. Spanish opens questions and exclamations with ¿ and ¡. Casual posts often skip them, but in a business bio they make the line look careful. On most phone keyboards they appear when you hold down ? or !.

  3. Choose tú or usted and keep to it. Tú is relaxed and suits most accounts; usted sounds more formal and can fit a law firm or a clinic, and in parts of Colombia and in Costa Rica people use it even with friends. Noun phrases such as “Pedidos por DM” avoid the choice.

  4. Everyday words change by country. A phone is a móvil in Spain and a celular in most of Latin America, and a car is a coche, carro or auto. If most followers live in one country, use their word; if they're spread out, pick one that travels, like teléfono.

  5. Adjectives change with gender (cansado, cansada), so switch the ending of any bio here to fit you. For a neutral line, lean on nouns: “fan del café” works for anyone, while “adicta al café” doesn't.

  6. Pick comment keywords without accents or ñ, such as LISTA, PRECIO or PEDIDO. People type a word like GUÍA both with and without the accent, and a plain word avoids the mismatch.

Questions people ask

Should my Instagram bio be in Spanish or English?

In the language most of your followers read. If they're split, use both: one line in each, or Spanglish if that's how you talk. A business can add a line such as “Atendemos en español e inglés” so customers know they can write in either.

How do I type ñ and accents on my phone?

Hold down the letter: a long press on n shows ñ, and a long press on a vowel shows á, é, í, ó and ú. If you write in Spanish often, add a Spanish keyboard in your phone's settings. It has ñ as its own key and suggests accents as you type.

Is Spanish from Spain different in a bio?

Mostly in the plural “you” and in a few everyday words. Spain uses vosotros (“¿Os apuntáis?”), while Latin America uses ustedes (“¿Se apuntan?”), and juice is zumo in Spain but jugo elsewhere. In a personal bio, write the way you speak; for a business, match where your customers are.

Can I translate my English bio into Spanish word for word?

It usually comes out stiff. “I'm a night owl” becomes “soy un búho nocturno”, which people understand but rarely say; “soy noctámbula” or “soy un ave nocturna” sounds natural. Translate the idea, then read it aloud: if you wouldn't say it to a friend, rewrite it.

What are some short Spanish phrases for a bio?

“Menos prisa, más vida”, “Pocas palabras, muchas fotos” and “Sí al plan, no al drama” are each under 30 characters, which leaves room for your name, a city and a next step. Add one emoji that matches your photos and stop there.
