Slang meaning
What does the ick mean?
“The ick” is the sudden, slightly irrational feeling of being put off by someone you were attracted to. It is usually set off by something small, such as the way they text, eat or walk, and it tends to arrive all at once.
Updated 6 October 2026
The ick is a sudden turn-off: you were into someone, then one small thing made the attraction vanish.
What ick can mean
1. A sudden loss of attraction
The usual sense. “I got the ick” means something small, often harmless, flipped a switch. It is a personal reaction, not a judgement of the other person’s character, which is why people laugh about their own icks.
2. A list item
People also say “my ick is…” to name a specific trigger: someone who talks to waiters in a silly voice, or who chews very loudly. Sharing icks is a popular comment-section game.
3. The sound of disgust
Before the slang sense, “ick” was already an interjection of disgust (“ick, what is that smell?”), and “icky” is the adjective. The dating meaning grew out of that, and the word still carries the same shrug of revulsion.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram comments
Under relationship memes and Reels, people tag a friend with “this is my ick” or list their own. The humour is in how petty the trigger is.
Stories and question stickers
“What’s your ick?” is a stock question box. The replies are usually small habits, and the owner posts the funniest ones.
DMs and group chats
Friends report icks after a date: “he just said ‘lol’ out loud instead of laughing and I felt it.” It is gossip, not a verdict on the person.
Facebook groups and posts
Appears in women’s and dating discussion groups, mostly as the question “has anyone else got the ick over this?” It is also used by older users, who are often hearing it for the first time.

How to reply to ick
Where it comes from
The noun use is a back-formation from the adjective “icky,” and the interjection “ick” itself is thought to be imitative, with documented use from around 1942 according to Wiktionary. Where the dating sense first took off is not well documented, so this page does not name a source.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between the ick and a red flag?
A red flag is a sign of a real problem, such as lying, cruelty or controlling behaviour. The ick is a personal turn-off with no moral weight: the person may be perfectly kind, you just stopped feeling it. Mixing them up is how harmless people get written off as “toxic.”
Can the ick go away?
People who talk about it usually say it does not, which is why they treat it as a sign the attraction has ended. That is anecdote, not research, and plenty of people laugh it off and carry on. There is no rule.
Is it fair to end things over the ick?
Attraction is allowed to end without a good reason, and saying so kindly is better than ghosting. It helps to be honest that it is about how you feel, and to avoid naming the small habit, which can sound cruel.
Is “the ick” only about romance?
Mostly, though it has spread to everything. People talk about getting the ick from a brand, a celebrity or a once-loved hobby, meaning they have gone off it for a small, hard-to-explain reason.
